This is a charming book of letters from Norwegian immigrants to friends and relatives back home. The collection spans a century of writing by folks from various parts of Norway who lived in various parts of the US with a wide variety of trades and occupations and writing styles. Women are included. Each set of letters is preceded by a brief background of the writer. Additional comments accompany some letters, not all of which are complete. It is a nice touch that even fragments are included. The only thing that would have enhanced my enjoyment was some commentary at the end of each set about what happened to the writer and/or people mentioned in the letters in order to provide closure.

I am planning a trip to Norway and am using it as an insight to the background of those who came (and returned). Not finished it at this point but finding it a great read.

Very enlightening; a true historical background to our forefathers' experiences in the New Country. In my mind, it took a lot of courage to leave their own country and strike out in a new world. Would recommend this book...it is a good read!
