This a great book for all levels of photographers. I bought a used volume that was in excellent shape. It helped me understand some basics I had forgotten and showed me some new things that helped on a recent trip to Europe.

I purchased this book thinking it would help with digital as I've studied film photography for several decades. While this may help new or serious FILM photographers, I no longer use a chemical darkroom or capture the light with film. So this was not the book I needed.
It does have techniques for basic photography, and is a good review for all levels of photography, but I need to learn more about digital darkroom not processing film in petrochemicals. Hence, I returned the book to Amazon.

this is a great starter book to learn about photography. I bought this book in conjunction with Ansel Adams "the camera" to get a sense of how to make my photos look better and be more professional. In just a short time I have gleaned much knowledge regarding the science that goes on behind the camera. It's a great starter book with photos and explanations to help guide you.

If you are studying photography, Ansel Adams is one of the great ones to invest your time into. The creator of the zone system and founder of the F-64's. Excellent deal, product was better than rated, shipped fast, and was a very good price. I would do business with again.

Beautifully illustrated and a wonderful look back into the history of California's most famous parks. Perfect photograph tips for beginners. Even though this book focuses on manual photography, I found it to be an excellent resource for the amateur photographer...like me.

basics of photography
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 12, 2012
I feel that many photographers have much respect of Ansel Adams. His pictures, taken in the 20th century are so detailed and clear with a perfect balance of the light. Who wouldn't like to learn photography from this man. The basics of photography are still aplicable on the DSLR's of today. When you understand the basics of operating the light that comes onto your sensor are the same as they were on film. When you want to get really into photography, this is the book.
I've been phographing thru the end of the 20th century (70's - 90's) with a camera with film, using the dark room and moved onto the 21st century on digital camera's. Technical there are differences, the film became a sensor and the dark room became post-editing with software. But the essentials of photography are the same.
This book describes that and let you understand what photography is all about.
Get as enthousiastic as Ansel once was.

A man of ultimate honesty
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 8, 2010
Ansel Adams was a pioneer in many senses of the word, an early ecologist, a founder member of the Sierra Club and a photographer who insisted on visualising a photograph before pressing the shutter release. Unlike so many photographers, he insisted on subordinating the technology to the image and this volume will inculcate this attitude in you. After reading and absorbing the contents of this book, the only interest megapixels, lens and body design and film choice will have for you is whether they are adequate for the task in hand - but the photographs you produce will have the power to grip the heart.
Buy it - you will no longer be the trendiest guy in the Camera Club - but your photographs will make you stand out.
