We're at war and we don't even know it, claims Kreeft, a philosophy professor at Boston College and a popular Christian writer. He describes the state of modern society and calls Christians back to a more biblical view of the world, pointing to the reality of evil spiritual beings, the existence of sin and the importance of recognizing the results of cultural pressure. He also has a fascinating argument concerning the central role of sexuality in the current "culture wars." Unfortunately, many readers will be driven off by Kreeft's snide, caustic tone. For example, he describes those who embrace the New Age movement as people "who always seemed to be flighty, flaky and female, at least in spirit." Moreover, while Kreeft frequently refers very positively to ecumenism, his perspective is much more Roman Catholic than reflective of the wider Christian audience he seeks to reach. Many readers will not agree that, for example, contraception should be categorized together with "sodomy, fornication and prostitution" as "clear and obvious sins." Kreeft's venture into the "Screwtape" idiom of C.S. Lewis makes for very interesting reading, though here, again, the assumption that the Protestant Reformation was a particularly successful attack by Satan will jar many. Kreeft ends the book with a call to sainthood, exhorting Christians to genuinely live out the goodness made available to them by the grace of God, and a stirring affirmation that goodness will indeed triumph over evil.

About the Author

Peter J. Kreeft (PhD, Fordham University) is professor of philosophy at Boston College where he has taught since 1965. A popular lecturer, he has also taught at many other colleges, seminaries and educational institutions in the eastern United States. Kreeft has written more than fifty books, including The Best Things in Life, The Journey, How to Win the Culture War, and Handbook of Christian Apologetics (with Ronald Tacelli).

Ddr. Kreeft Does It Again! Makes the Complex Easy To Understand.

Dr. Kreeft has taken a very complex-issue and made it understandable. I have seen some of the reviews from individuals stating the book was poorly written yada, yada, yada. Dr. Kreeft could use very complex theological language that only folks like me with my degrees and studies in religion could understand. I am glad he didn't do that and wrote the book so many people can grasp the issue and understand what we are up against and what needs to be done to right the ship. This book is worth reading and I highly recommend it if you want to help in this task and properly and easily articulate to others why the country is in this mess and what needs to be done to fix it.

How to Deal With the Underbelly of What Worries Most Americans

In "How to Win the Culture War," Boston College Professor of Philosophy and author, Peter Kreeft, addresses what worries most Americans today - social issues, more specifically, moral issues. Drugs, terrorism, divorce, homelessness, rape, alcoholism, violence, child abuse, abortion, the destruction of families, teen pregnancies, AIDS, and suicides are the issues that touch our lives directly. Typically, we give into the mantra of "you can't stop progress." Kreeft responds that this progress is not progress but, rather, a false god we have named Progress. Real progress would be movement towards, not away from, the goal of every human being - Happiness.

"How to Win the Culture War" is a wake-up call, a call to arms, written "on the battlefield, in the heat of battle.' Kreeft spells out that we need to know:
* We are at war
* Who our enemy is
* What kind of war we are in
* What the basic principle of this kind of war is
* What the enemy's strategy is
* Where the battlefield is
* What weapon will defeat the enemy
* How to acquire this weapon
* Why we will win

In the book, Kreeft takes a page from C.S. Lewis' "Screwtape Letters" and uses a "speech" given by Satan to his demons in which the "father of lies" outlines his strategy for the third millennium - political correctness, fear, addiction to appearances, divisions within each church between the faithful and the dissenters, politicizing religion into left vs. right, and moral relativism. And for those who react negatively to those fighting the cultural war and believe God is a lover not a warrior, Kreeft responds that God is lover...but one who is a warrior because He (love) is at war with hate, betrayal, selfishness, and all the enemies of love. We must join him in this battle.

We exist on a spiritual battlefield where it is being decided whether our souls will live or die, where there are real enemies who are trying to kill us - not only our bodies but our souls. Kreeft has given us at a minimum, a nine-point checklist on how each of us can join him on this battlefield and win the most important war of the Third Millennium.

Stirring call to action

In all seriousness, this book reads like a Knute Rockne halftime speech. Reader beware: Kreeft uses some awfully strong language--he's not afraid to smash his fist into a locker or throw a clipboard at your head to get your attention. But any Christian, Jew, Muslim, or really any believer in God can play on Kreeft's team. And whether you come in tired, confused, mad, or even just warming the bench, you'll want to get out there and take on the forces of evil after hearing his inspiring, if not frightening, message.

Kreeft lays out the enemy's battle plan ala C.S. Lewis/The Screwtape Letters, speaking as Satan addressing his team of demons. While the concept of a literal Satan may be quaint to some, Kreeft builds a pretty convincing case for his existence, through Biblical citations but more through some persuasive logical argument. Kreeft maintains that once we understand the enemy, his goal and his plan, we can formulate a response. The enemy, of course, is Satan; the goal is the total corruption of souls; the plan is to wreak personal and social chaos by infusing the philosphy of relativism into all our thoughts and actions. But despite the damage that's been done, Kreeft is anything but pessimistic: he is certain that it is never too late to wake up to the dangers and take effective action. Kreeft explains how we can do this. Well worth reading, as long as you're willing to set your complacency aside!
