If you have no idea of the condition of the environment in the 1930's and the scope of contribution of the CCC and WPA to improve it, this is the book for you. It will show you how man can improve the environment after having neglected it for a long time. And it shows how governmental intervention and resources change lives for the better, not only for the current generation but for those to come.

The book is very textbookish at times with facts and details, but in the end the scope of what was accomplished by the CCC and WPA is inspiring.

It also shows that while many areas were resistance to the government intervention in the beginning, most areas were clammering for the support when they saw the changes that were occurring in the early implementation areas.

This is almost a forgotten generation and something that people who oppose governmental spending do not want you to know.

Professor Jolley has written an excellent treatment of the CCC across a state, only surpassed by Charles Melzer's New Mexico book "Coming of Age in the Great Depression." Jolley has mined his archival sources well giving us a clear, well organized and thorough look at the CCC in North Carolina. Excellent photos. He does an excellent job of treating the topic of African Americans in the CCC as well as Native Americans. Putting together a complete list of CCC camps like this author's is a difficult job, as I can testify having done this for Arizona and Colorado. Excellent use of oral history interviews.
