I was so looking forward to adding this textbook to my personal library. Upon receipt I noticed a real musty smell and as I flipped the pages I could smell mold. So I promptly wrapped it up and put in my freezer and frankly not sure if I will keep it. I certainly don't need to introduce mold into my library. This was a lesson learned and I am not sure if I will ever purchase a used book again. So disappointed.

A book that is a MUST, for the library of anyone interested in History and information on Early Photographic Processes. Thou is an old edition, and you can find other books of newer edition, on the same topics, I believe you must have it.

Not only is this book the bible of alternative processes, (contemporary books on the topic have lifted recipes directly from here), but the book also gives a fascinating walk though the history of the first 60 years of photography through the processes. A very different focus than other histories of the medium. I also quite enjoyed Crawford's analysis of the division in art present at the birth of photography, that immediately spilled into the medium, and I believe is still present today. Yes this book is dated by the fact that it doesn't discuss digital internegatives; but I don't believe it is missed at all in this book. There are plenty of sources for information on digital anything that can be found online or in other books. This publication is packed with interesting, well researched, readable content. The Keepers of Light is easily in my top 10 best photography books of all time, and is yet another example of an excellent book on the topic of photography that shouldn't be out of print, (of which there are many).

An invaluable book

This is most useful to all engaged in 'alternative' photographic processes.A historical overview is followed by practical advice on methods. A book this size can never be comprehensive though and the huge Book of Alternative Photographic Processes by James is then needed.

A very complete description of the evolution of photographic processes, as well as a very well written guide for their practice. Definitively a reference book.

If you want to learn about the different techniques of making prints, this is the book. At the end (Part III) there are also 10 pages on how to conserve and restore photo prints. This is the best I have seen so far about this topic.
