This book alone would not be my first choice for someone just getting started.

I have an extensive background working with vehicles, from a wide variety of on and off road vehicles to amateur and semi-pro race cars. I also have nearly 30 years of recreational off-road experience.

I felt the author spent an inordinate amount of time on mechanical minutia, and he was either inarticulate about it or had such a tenuous grasp of it that the information bordered between misleading and erroneous. I feel that he skimmed over the important information for which a reader would more likely have bought such a book. He often cites specific brand gear rather than offering the criteria that one should use to choose the gear according to the type of trails and personal experience level.

I bought this book, and another, to use as instructional material for my own budding off-road enthusiasts. This will serve fine as supplemental information. And in that respect, I can recommend this book. However, if your budget only allows the purchase of one book and you currently have no others, then I must withhold my recommendation.

This book has some very useful information and is very easy to understand. I thought that the extra equipment/gear lists were a bit long and for myself some is not realistic to carry. If the information in this book is combined with other publications a good list of gear to carry on a 4 wheel adventure could be developed. The additional resources listed in this book were also very helpful. For new and experienced off-roaders this book is a useful tool.

Dated information and serious lacks illustrations

Well I recalled seeing this book several years ago when there simply were not a lot of books discussing off road driving and recovery. I decided to pickup a used copy and ended up being pretty disappointed. While there is decent information in the book it really lacks updated information and illustrations. A few days later I also received Jim Allen's Four Wheeler's Bible and wow what a difference. Now I'm not here to write a review on another book but all I am saying is there is much more relevant information out there. I would leave this one on the shelf because it belongs in the 90's when the book was written.

I found this book very informative. I thought not only it gave some basic knowledge about 4 wheeling but also allowed me to make a better choice in the kind of vehicle I will purchase. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because the book is alittle dated. I would have loved some better pictures.

Wie schon in der der Überschrift angedeutet finde ich das Buch inhaltlich gut. Es werden diverse Standard-Situationen des Offraod-Fahrens beschrieben, auf die man treffen kann und Gefahren erklärt, sowie die Lösung/Herangehensweise beim Fahren beschrieben. Gewürzt wird das Ganze dann zwischendurch mit privaten Erlebnissen des Autors, die ich sehr spannend zu lesen finde. Sicherlich gibt es bessere Offroad-Bücher, aber da der Markt sehr überschaubar ist, kann ich es trotzdem weiterempfehlen. Klar sein muss einem, dass das Buch vom US-Markt kommt und manche Hinweise für den Europäer vielleicht etwas seltsam klingen, wenn es ums Jagen oder Waffen geht.

Die Kindle-Umsetzung ist leider - wie so oft - mangelhaft. Es fehlen gar halbe Sätze, die Bilder sind an abenteuerlichen Stellen platziert und man merkt einfach, dass man ein gedrucktes Buch so einfach nicht digitalisieren kann, ohne anständige Redaktion: dies lässt amazon aber offensichtlich weg.

Schade. Tut mir leid, wenn meine Bewertung das Buch "runterzieht", aber es geht bei Bewertungen auch um die Aufmachung/Form und nicht nur um den Inhalt.
