Be careful with the recommended plant spacing

We are now in our fifth year of large scale backyard vegetable gardening. We grow enough food/ herbs to provide year round produce for our family and friends and in the summer months we do not buy commercial produce at all. We grow food on several acres. The first year, we planted exactly as this book was written as far as plant spacing. We had read a review by a master gardener saying it was WAY too close together, however, this book talked over and over about how with healthy soil, such intensive planting would be fine. Our raised beds are filled two feet thick with certified organic compost. It is beautiful, black, healthy compost that we use every year. That first year, we found that because of the intesive planting, it allowed for the spread of pests and disease even though the plants were being watered at soil level. Birds and natural predators had a hard time getting in there and doing their job. Our friends refer to our garden as Jurassic park since our plants get enormous in this rich soil, but isn't that the point? Every year since, We have spread out the plants more and more until they are now at regular/normal spacing. We have found that companion planting is a must and no amount of healthy soil matters when plants are too crowded. So we still use the square foot grid, but tomatoes are 24" apart, eggplant 18", peppers 12-18" etc etc. we do not grow squash, pumpkin, corn or cukes in raised beds anymore either. They are much healthier and happier when allowed to ramble and spread out. "Vertical" gardening is tough when you are growing on the scale we do and the constant tying up and managing required is too cumbersome. God forbid you go away for a few days during tomato season and come back to a forest of overwhelming vines too long to tie up again. So by all means, there are good lesson to take from this book, we just don't use the spacing he recommends. Happy planting!

CAUTION: Don't make the same mistake I did! Buy the new edition!

I'm new to Square Foot Gardening and when I read the reviews of the new edition, a few comments jumped out at me about how the new edition seems so much more commercialized and self-promoting on the author's part and seemed more geared toward getting people to buy stuff (including the pre-made "Mel's Mix" soil) and how this version is better. So I got this one. BAD MOVE!

I looked at the pre-mixed soil at my local Lowe's and it would have been upwards of $170 to fill the 4x4, 12" bed we built, so I decided to buy the components separately and mix them myself.

The "recipe" for the soil called for vermiculite, compost, and peat moss, and sand, and lime, and fertilizers. When it was done, it was a big, SANDY mess. Not knowing a lot about gardening but knowing enough to realize that the soil seemed VERY sandy, especially in my hot Southern California climate, I asked the nice folks at the SFG forums and was immediately told that the newer, current edition has changed the soil formula completely and it's now 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss, and NO SAND. And no fertilizers or lime. DOH. Also, this sandy mess in my box is not appropriate for our summers when moisture is precious and evaporates quickly.

So now my eventual plans to build a second bed (I wanted to see how the "test" bed went first) have been accelerated. We're going to build it, use the sandy mess for the bottom half, and then top off both boxes with the "real" mix and hope for the best.

In the meantime, I've bought the new book on Kindle and just from flipping to the chapter on soil I can see a lot of validity in the comments about it being self-promoting, but as long as the information is accurate I guess I can deal with it while I nurse my sore wallet and blistered hands. :)

I had a paperback edition of this book and was thrilled to find two hard cover editions, which I ordered to share with friends. This way of gardening makes such total sense! It can be adapted to strips around a house or narrower spots, such as under a net tunnel created with 10' or more PVC pipe--anywhere you can put a 1-foot square! There is so much gardening sense in it that I'm actually reading all the material between the two covers now. You'll be lucky if you can find one of these books, for the TV series that promoted it in the 80s is long gone.

I started vegetable gardening at a community garden last year. I have a 4' x 8' raised bed. This book is my bible. His website is also very helpful. I didnt follow Mel's formula for the dirt. I used the dirt provided by the community garden. I followed Mel's instructions about putting the garden to rest. I didn't have 3" of compost, only about 1" (this was still a lot of bags) and I think it made a difference w/ the tomatoes this year. Square foot gardening is the way to go. We have a short growing season and it provides a variety of vegetables with ease. And it's fun!
