- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2009The reviewer that tagged Al Kooper as the rock 'n roll version of Forrest Gump hit the nail on the head. It's the exact thought I had as I finished the book. He had an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time. Al Kooper was there whenever something monumental was happening in rock music - whether it was Bob Dylan, Monterey Pop, the Rolling Stones, the Tubes, Lynyrd Skynryd and so on. His discography is STUNNING! He has played on records by and/or produced a tremendous number of musicians - and not "nobodys", people like Dylan, the Rolling Stones, BB King, Skynyrd, Rick Nelson, Gene Pitney, Judy Collins, The Who, Taj Mahal, George Harrison, Tom Petty etc... I can't think of ANYONE who has this kind of discography! This book is entertaining, informative and well-written. It has to be in the all time top 5 of books written about Rock 'n Roll. It's also inspirational. Al Kooper makes no bones about not being the most talented player on the block - he had to "fake it till he could make it."
This book was fetching upwards of $300 when it was out of print, so I was thrilled to see it revised and back in print. It's all here - inter and intra band conflicts, stories of the road - both the "glamour" (not much) and the boredom (plenty), drugs, women, the music industry, club owners etc... It's clear to me that Al Kooper must have a strong personality - he has some good musical vision (e.g. the horn band Blood Sweat and Tears was his concept). He also clearly rubs a lot of people the wrong way, and had numerous falling outs with bandmates, women and business people. This probably cost him a lot - both in reputation and money/success. I would love to see a book detailing other people's opinions of Al - I have read articles/interviews in Goldmine Magazine and Al was definitely controversial. In his autobiography Al comes across as honest and a good guy, but it's clear to me that he, like many rock 'n rollers was very self-absorbed and probably couldn't see himself objectively in many situations. Either way - get this book, it's a must read!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2024I have followed Al Kooper's career from when he was in The Blues Project in the mid to late 60s. One of my favorite musicians. He is a great story-teller. Very funny. A LOT of his stories had me laughing out loud. His writing is easy to follow, very descriptive. He puts you in the room so you feel like you were there.
One of rock's greatest keyboard players, and an excellent musician and a VERY entertaining author.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2023Wow, what an amazing narrative of Al Kooper’s life as he climbed the ladder of rock ‘n’ roll Mr. Kooper set the bar where musicians should go to reach their rock ‘n’ roll “Heaven,” loved every moment of his candidness, his straight forward speech, and his honesty. Mr. Kooper recollection and attitude in the book is hilarious. I recommend it for anyone who loves rock ‘n’ roll history, I purchased the book to understand why Al Kooper went to England in the 1960s and brought back 40 albums and one of those albums was The Zombies iconic “ Odyessey and Oracle.” The Zombies are now in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame and Mr. Kooper will be joining them on November 3 of this year. Thank you Mr. Kooper for staying true to your rock ‘n’ roll and sharing your love for music with us ❤️🧑🏻🦱🏆😎❤️The media could not be loaded.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2016This is an enormously entertaining read. Kooper takes us on a journey through a lot of different facets of the music business, and in the course of the book shows how he evolved from Royal Teen to Dylan sideman, to Blues Project and BS&T bandmate, to A&R exec to Professor Al. In between, he recounts his studio work as a musician with George Harrison, the Rolling Stones and countless others, as well as his discovery and producing of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The tale is mostly chronological and told in an engaging, conversational tone. Kooper started out as an old-school pop-song tunesmith, and his writing style tends to reveal more of that aspect of his personality. There are puns and turns of the phrase that you might expect to hear in a lyric rather than in conversation or biography; but that’s Al being AL. If you’re seeking great literature, look elsewhere – this is a story that could have been told over several beers and won’t be nominated for any book awards. By contrast, Donald Fagen’s recent autobiography tells less, but does so in a more literary style. As an avid reader of this genre, I’ll take substance over style when the story’s right. If you want both style and substance, check out Keith Richards’ book.
Kooper forthrightly discusses his own mistakes and shortcomings – not so much as a cautionary tale but to say that in some ways, he was an accomplice to the crimes perpetrated on him by a cruel and heartless industry. He pulls no punches and names names when it comes to those he judges as “backstabbing bastards,” making it clear that the music business is no place for the weak. This updated edition was written in 2008, chronicling the Life of Al through 2007 –so I eagerly await his account of the following decade.

Not surprisingly, Kooper let's it all hang out here.....and wott-o-ride it's been. His self-effacing
manner is reflected throughout, but it can't cover up how many times he has stumbled into
the center of cultural events, played a central role; and then gone like a cool breeze onto the next adventure. GREAT read!

Thorsten HollmannReviewed in Germany on February 12, 20175.0 out of 5 stars Sehr gute Autobiographie von Al Kooper , dem US Westcoast Ausnahmemusiker und -Produzenten
TedmiamiReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 20125.0 out of 5 stars The Music Business Inside and Out
Al Kooper has been one of the most influential musicians from the 60's to the 90's, having played on many sensational hit records for other people without actually becoming as famous as he should have been in his own right. He has written songs, managed, produced, guest-appeared and discovered records and groups we all know (Lynyrd Skynryd, Blood Sweat & Tears, for example)and love and yet even with a dozen or more solo albums to his name he is still an enigma, hardly known to the masses. He has had a love affair with music from a very early age but as we all know, love affairs don't always end up as a bed of roses. This book opens many wounds as he tells it like it really was. Eye opening and painfully direct in places his story is the real tale of early rock n roll written and told straight from the heart, warts and all. This is the life and times of a man who knows music.

If you know who Al Kooper is, you will enjoy this book. If you are interested in the golden age of rock and roll which (IMO) was the period from the mid- fifties to the mid-seventies, you will enjoy this book.
Written primarily from a US perspective, Al Kooper will entertain you with stories of his rock and roll life in which he met, and played (keyboards and guitar), and rubbed shoulders with a pantheon of famous/infamous/and not so famous musicians.
Kooper regales the reader with stories which make you wish you were having a beer with him and hearing the stories first hand. This book is the next best thing.
The reader is left with the impression that Kooper is a thoughtful, literate individual (which I am sure he is). He just happens to have had an amazing rock and roll life and lived to tell about it.
Recommended.
