Book overview

The third novel in Cherryh’s Foreigner space opera series, a groundbreaking tale of first contact and its consequences…

Six months have passed since the reappearance of the starship
Phoenix—the same ship which brought a colony of humans to the hostile environment of alien atevi nearly two hundred years ago. During these six months, the atevi have reconfigured their fledgling space program in a bid to take their place in the heavens alongside humans. But the return of the Phoenix has added a frighteningly powerful third party to an already volatile situation, polarizing both human and atevi political factions, and making the possibility of all-out planetary war an even more likely threat.

On the
atevi mainland, human ambassador Bren Cameron, in a desperate attempt to maintain the peace, has arranged for one human representative from the Phoenix to take up residence with him in his apartments, and for another to be stationed on humanity's island enclave. Bren himself is unable to return home for fear of being arrested or assassinated by the powerful arch conservative element who wish to bar the atevi from space.

Responsible for a terrified, overwhelmed young man, and desperately trying to keep abreast of the
atevi associations, how can Bren possibly find a way to save two species from a three-sided conflict that no one can win?

Review

Praise for the Foreigner series:

“C.J. Cherryh's splendid
Foreigner series remains at the top of my must-keep-up reading list after two decades." —Locus

"This is the kind of anthropological SF of which
[Cherryh] is an acknowledged master." —Booklist

"A seriously probing, thoughtful, intelligent piece of work, with more insight in half a dozen pages than most authors manage in half a thousand." —Kirkus Reviews

“One of the best long-running SF series in existence...Cherryh
remains one of the most talented writers in the field." —Publishers Weekly

“This is
one of the best science fiction series currently running….by this point, the series has turned into a complicated set of thrillers involving political and factional turmoil, as well as a close and detailed examination of the troubled interactions between human and alien cultures.” —Strange Horizons

“Cherryh plays her strongest suit in this exploration of human/alien contact, producing
an incisive study-in-contrast of what it means to be human in a world where trust is nonexistent.” —Library Journal

"A large new novel from C.J. Cherryh is always welcome. When it marks her return to the anthropological SF in which she has made such a name, it is a double pleasure. The ensuing story is not short on action, but stronger (like much of Cherryh's work) on world-building, exotic aliens, and characterization.
Well up to Cherryh's usual high standard." —The Chicago Sun-Times

“[Cherryh] avoids any kind of slump with a quick-moving and immediately engaging plotline, and by balancing satisfying resolutions with plenty of promises and ominous portents that are sure to keep readers’ appetites whetted.” —RT Reviews

“These are thinking man’s reads with
rich characters and worlds and fascinating interactions that stretch out over many generations.” —SFFWorld

“Cherryh's forte is her
handling of cross-cultural conflicts, which she does by tying her narrative to those things her point-of-view character would know, think, and feel.”—SFRevu

I've written sf and fantasy for publication since 1975...but I've written a lot longer than that. I have a background in Mediterranean archaeology, Latin, Greek, that sort of thing; my hobbies are travel, photography, planetary geology, physics, pond-building for koi...I run a marine tank, can plumb most anything, and I figure-skate.

I believe in the future: I'm an optimist for good reason---I've studied a lot of history, in which, yes, there is climate change, and our species has been through it. We've never faced it fully armed with what we now know, and if we play our cards right, we'll use it as a technological springboard and carry on in very interesting ways.

I also believe a writer owes a reader a book that has more than general despair to spread about: I write about clever, determined people who don't put up with situations, not for long, anyway: people who find solutions inspire me.

It's probably going to take me forever to finish reading all the books in CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series, of which Inheritor is book 3... And for the sake of those who're not conversant with the world, I'll keep this review short and try to give general points.

Human ambassador/diplomat Bren Cameron continues to be adrift in Atevi society, which is, as always, a potentially lethal minefield for those not adept in the subtle power dynamics of a non-human civilisation. And that's the mistake many humans make when interacting with the Atevi – they simply don't have the hardwiring to understand core human concepts like love or caring. Atevi social dynamics is primarily focused on power and associations of individuals to others and groups that hold power.

In learning an intricate language that is has complex mathematics embedded in its linguistics, Bren finds himself even more alienated from human culture and meaningful interaction – a position which is made even more precarious as factions within the minority human community are viewing him as a traitor while certain groups within Atevi society would gleefully see him dead, too.

The planet's power dynamics have been thrown completely out of whack by the arrival of the human space ship, with the spacefaring humans in dire need of supplies they can only obtain from the planet. We see human and ateva alike vying for primacy in a new space race, as the Atevi assimilate human technology that might make them all but unstoppable if they gain interstellar travel.

Added to the mix are two human diplomats from the space ship who are now negotiating on the ground – for people who've known only the confines of life on board a vessel for generations, the adjustment to living on a planet is traumatic.

Cherryh does a deep dive into interpersonal relationships within a distorted, multicultural society in a complex, nuanced way, which may make this a trademark slow read, but as always, she subtly works to pull the rug from beneath your feet near the end, with sudden, frantic action that had my heart racing.

This is the third book in a long-running science fiction series that (at least thus far) centers on Bren Cameron, a human translator/mediator embedded among aliens. I find Bren highly likable and his detailed viewpoint immersive. I also love the complex, fascinating alien civilization. I've gobbled up three books in short order, and will be progressing straight to book four. That said, the level of detailed introspection is not everyone's cup of tea. The beginning of book three didn't hold my attention as well as the remainder, partly because very little happens, and partly because Bren's early thoughts repeat much that was familiar from the earlier books (presumably to help readers new to the series).

Small spoilers ahead. A quick note that I especially enjoy the principal alien assassins (Banichi, Jago, Cenidi) and it pleased me that there is a notable development in Bren's connection to one of these. I also considerably enjoy the elderly female leader, Ilisidi.

Highly recommended. Four out of five pensive stars.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

I got into this series while traveling and realizing I forgot to bring a book. I popped into a used book store in Tacoma, Wash. and brought the second book in the series. It seemed like dumb move, but the story description was so compelling and the writing style so direct and active, that I figured I wouldn’t feel lost not having read the first book.
I was right, and I enjoyed the heck out of that book while stuck in airports and in the middle seat of long flights. And as soon as I got home, I order the first and third (this one) books — and now there’s no looking back.
This is great read for any fans of science fiction looking for a bit of space opera without the technology focus you find in many novels.

This entire series is incredible. The pace can be very slow at times and I'll confess I tend to skip over some of the main characters musings as they seem to go on and on. These books, so far up to number 7, are mostly inside the main characters head. It's not written in first person but third limited. So we only know what the main character knows and we discover things as he does. So the tendency is for the main character to wonder about this and ponder about that. Based on what he knows, based on his ability to surmise and come to logical conclusions, he will think and figure things out in his head.

So with that said there tends to be less action than other SCi-Fi books and in this world of fast paced adventure movies, I'm sure not every reader will enjoy this book or the series. But, each book builds on the last and gets better and better and better and if you have patience and can understand from the beginning that this is more of a cerebral type of book then it is my opinion that these books are apart of the best written Sci-Fi extant.

The author has the ability to, through the main character's musings and interaction with the other main characters, compare the differences between vastly different races and actually shed light on how we in our society could learn to interact with and live along side others who are different from ourselves. And as the series continues she continues to delve into the differences and similarities between races.

She sheds light on the inner workings of the human psyche in times of extreme pressure. Interactions between one human culture and another; between humans and aliens who though vastly different from humans, are, at the same time, similar.

After several years of on and off frugally searching for this old hardcover in its original printing, with a couple of returns due to getting a smaller sized book club hardcover which did not match my collection of the rest of the series, I was delighted to find a book description explicitly listing the publisher and printing I wanted. Description of condition as nearly new was also completely honest, no exaggeration as many book dealers do; I paid more than I had previously but I am completely satisfied.
