Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Newman has performed much preliminary leg work for researchers in black American history. She itemizes and discusses the National Archives records of 141 U.S. federal agencies from the colonial period into the 1970s, identifying them by record group number. A history of each agency and the nature of its concern with black Americans lends contextual depth to each description. Similar guides exist, some of which are Newman's, but this is the most comprehensive one in print. Newman has opened a door of discovery in black history by creating a lively and efficient means of access to largely unexplored primary source documents, endowing them with a potential for maximum utility to researchers. Susan E. Parker, Tufts Univ. Lib., Medford, Mass.
