While this book was first published in 1998 the copy I chose to purchase was advertised as the 'revised edition." Nothing could be further from the truth.
The author repeatedly refers to indexes which are not in the legacy archives, advocates the reader to mail a request letter to organizations of interest, all of which now have digital connection via email and recommends the reader to obtain CD's of reference material. This book has not been significantly updated since its original publication and is now better categorized as 'relic document' than relevant preparation for the Accreditation exams. Furthermore the book is full of misspellings while ironically admonishing the reader to polish their own writing skills to eliminate just such mistakes. *Do not buy.*

I have been working on my own family history for about a decade. -- Because so many friends ask me to help them, I decided to find out what I would need to do to become a professional genealogist. -- This book explains the various ways one can become accredited or certified, the difference between being an accredited genealogist, a certified genealogist or a "paid researcher" and gives provides many resources to obtain the needed training. -- At this point I am going to continue to learn, study, practice on my friends and learn all I can so that I can eventually travel to Salt Lake City to take the test for accreditation, which is FREE. There's lots of work involved, but this book really helps figure out how to approach it all. Glad I bought it!

I am in a facebook group that does genealogical research. Thanks this book, I have become one of the top researchers instead of just a member of the group. I recommend it for anyone even if they are just tracing their own ancestors.

The book is ok, the delivery was hairy. It was in Rockledge, out for.delivery, then back to Jacksonville then Rockledge the next day, then out for delivery. Why was it out into Customs when the book was in the USA and to be delivered in the USA?

Mentioning FamilySearch and compact disc in the same breath should tell you a lot. Genealogy, like all other information professions, has undergone a seachange since 1998 (the copyright date for this revised addition). Likewise, the nitty-gritty for certification with that "new" International Commission has changed. (You'll have to google for an URL since the one given in the book takes you to the Utah Genealogical Association.) The book is not without merit; thus, the stars. The later chapters on analysis of material do have some merit, but Ancestry.com should not be proud of the fact that it is still publishing and charging for this product.

great book for anyone interested in becoming a professional genealogist. I was, however, a little disappointed because the book is outdated. Either I didn't look or it wasn't described that the book was copyright many years ago.
