Review

This book is a MUST read for anyone interested in nutrition especially for mothers, soon to be mothers, or even if you ever even plan on having a child. --Peggy Merritt

About the Author

Dr. Francis M. Pottenger, Jr. was an original thinker and keen observer whose imagination, integrity and common sense gave him the courage to question official dogma. Dedicated to the cause of preventing chronic illness, he made significant contributions to the understanding of the role of nutrition in maintaining good health.
In his classical experiments in cat feeding, more than 900 cats were studied over 10 years. Dr. Pottenger found that only diets containing raw milk and raw meat produced optimal health: good bone structure and density, wide palates with plenty of space for teeth, shiny fur, no parasites or disease, reproductive ease and gentleness.
Cooking the meat or substituting heat-processed milk for raw resulted in heterogeneous reproduction and physical degeneration, increasing with each generation. Vermin and parasites abounded. Skin diseases and allergies increased from 5% to over 90%. Bones became soft and pliable. Cats suffered from adverse personality changes, hypothyroidism and most of the degenerative diseases encountered in human medicine. They died out completely by the fourth generation.
The changes Pottenger observed in cats on the deficient diets paralleled the human degeneration that Dr. Price found in tribes that had abandoned traditional diets.

Pottenger's Cats: A Study in Nutrition I learned of this book from the pages of"The Untold Story of Milk" by Ron SchmidThe Untold Story of Milk, Revised and Updated: The History, Politics and Science of Nature's Perfect Food: Raw Milk from Pasture-Fed Cows, also a 5 Star book. It is amazing how such a small book can speak volumes of truth on nutrition. His study was with almost 1000 cats over multiple years. This is well worth reading and is also very easy to read and understand even if you are just beginning your journey into nutrition. This should be a required read in EVERY medical college along with "The Untold Story of Milk" by Ron Schmid, which is about so much more than just milk. Read these two books, practice what you learn and you and your families health will benefit greatly!!!

What a treasure trove of vital information! Though a great many cats were sacrificed to obtain this information, the greater tragedy, to me, is that this research has been pretty much swept under the carpet. It's just not politically correct nor does it lead to career longevity to tell the truth about much of anything in this country. Between Dr. Pottenger and Dr. Weston A. Price, they managed to unearth, discover and test their ideas for the greater good of humanity.....unlike what happens now in "research", which is very often funded by BigPharma, BigAg, BigFood and the like.

This book is amazing it shows the effects of what happens when food is degraded by cooking.
I went out and bought high-grade raw milk and him eating more vegetables… No I’m not eating my steak raw

But it has opened up a whole new way of looking at food and nutrition highly recommend

To understand how significantly nutrition and diet affects us there’s not much more evidence than this book. Poor diet will affect decades of living beings. Change your nutrition habits and leave a legacy of health.

If you are interested in learning about human or animal nutrition, especially as it relates to natural diets for health you owe it to yourself to read this book.
Pottenger's Cats is as pertinent today as it was when it was written. It is possibly even more important today as there are now genetically modified foods, pesticides, herbicides, etc. which did not exist at that time.
As cats are prone to suffer many ailments similar to that of humans, it is astonishing to note the results of diets of raw healthy food on the cats in his studies, as well as the behavior and ailments of the cats eating cooked food.

You may also find Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston Price an amazing look at how humans change according to diet.

Interesting book. This book was recommended to me at a forum discussing the benefits of feeding a cat raw diet. I found the text of this book to be quite complex and a little too technical, at times. Felt more like it might be more appropriate for a student at vet school or someone more qualified. I did not find that much clear information for regular pet owners hoping to switch their cat to a raw diet.

Very informative about cat health, but a bit of a dry read. If you are unsure about the benefits of feeding raw, I suggest you consider reading this. Skip all the internet propaganda and read this scientific information.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the cat's mouth - the raw, famous experiment
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 11, 2011
Pottenger's experiments with cat's diets are famous amongst companion animal nutritionists.

As a final year student in BSc Animal Science this resource has been a valuable alternative to second-hand reviews of Pottenger's experiments. There is truly no replacement for the experimenter's own interpretations, especially with this experiment - as many authors have twisted Pottenger's words, and misquoted results.

But, of course, this is not for the lay person, and requires some former knowledge of nutrition.
