About the Author

The late Philip J. Hoffman of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was born in Albany, NY in 1891. A registered professional engineer, Phil participated in several engineering projects along the old Allegheny Portage Railroad tunnel and thus acquired an interest in the railroad. This activity led to the hundreds of sketches he made after retirement of "life as it was" on the Pennsylvania canal system of the mid-1800's.
