A Superb Testimony to the Historian's Art.

"From the Coalfields to the Hudson" by Larry Lowenthal is a remarkably detailed history of the Delaware-Hudson Canal and the early development of U.S. anthracite coal industry. Drawn for the correspondence of those that made it happen and original corporate documents, "Coalfields" shows exceptional insight into the personalities of the primary actors and the politics of the times. The pictures and documents presented (about 1/3 of the text) are both comprehensive and well beyond what even the most demanding student of history might expect, though slightly short of fun statistics regarding the construction and actual operation of the canal. Unlike many of the canals of its era, the D&H was a profitable, privately owned enterprise and operated from 1828–1899. The original D&H (opened 1828) had 108 locks, was 108 miles long and had an elevation differential of 1,075 feet. By comparison, the Erie Canal (opened 1825) had 83 locks, was 363 miles long and had an elevation differential of 566 feet. Of equal interest is the story of how the Wurts family promoted the use of anthracite coal as a primary fuel and the effect that this had on home heating, transportation, and driving the industrial revolution during the 19th Century, basically displacing wood as a primary fuel in much of the U.S. A great illustration of the effect that canals had on the growth of the U.S. economy (though the Erie dwarfed them all in this regard). Overall, "Coalfields" is a superb testimony to the historian's art.
