As a set (with the Master Book of Irish Surnames) they become one of the most useful sets available....This Book should be placed on every reference shelf. -- AFRA, Family Records Today - v16 #3
This is the master placename index of the IGF, now released by the Irish Family Journal. Every place name and its location on the 19th century map collection (all maps are reprinted here) is indexed, and easily found on the maps!
Furthermore, we have added the 17th century placename index, showing older place names not found today, and older ways place names were spelled. Over 20,000 listings in this section alone. Included are modern parish listings in for comparison. Also included are baronies, townlands, places, diocese, poor law unions and registrar districts.
The classic commentary of P.W. Joyce is found in the appendix, outlining common spelling changes, along with additional district and barony maps of Ireland. Charts of common variant spellings, prefix and suffix changes; placenames with more than one location are listed; 17th century map examples, along with an introduction to understanding Irish place names, regional divisions and sources for further research!
This hardbound volume completes the 'Master Book' series ( A Companion Book to The Complete Book of Irish Family Names.)
