A book about commitment and freedom

I've been doing other things besides sailing, but I unfortunately read this book and it has rekindled those cruising dreams. Life has so many options. As Don Juan said "The tragedy of a mans' life is that there isn't enough time to do everything". For me it is a real page turner, entertaining and full of information. Be aware, though, that it is a book about a lifestyle, not a sailing tutorial, even though it does give a lot of practical information.
The only complaint I have about the book is that Ms. Hill falls into the trap of the occasional snarky comment about the choices others make. Since the main focus of the book is essentially the concept of freedom maybe she should cut them some slack. We all make choices that we perceive to be the best for us. Who in all the world cares if someone wants to go to bed at sunset, or pay someone to do their laundry?
Love their boat and ideals of personal responsibilty though.

Useful Worthwhile Read

I made the mistake of not ordering this book when originally interested based on some negative reviews reported here. However, references continued to pop up at various locations regarding the value of the book, so I proceeded with the purchase. When it arrived, I read through the book in 3-4 days and found it an easy and worthwhile read with good perspectives to focus one's thoughts on what one want's out of cruising, and scaling down the dream fitting out list. The thoughts it provides on foodstuff seems most practical. I would buy again, and it has been added near the top of my stack of useful reference material for my cruise preparations, and one tip has been gleaned from the book that proves useful immediately even for day sailing.

Excellent reading for anyone considering cruising on a smaller/smallish income. The book covers many decisions made regarding boat type, build or buy, outfitting, handling, weatherliness, and nearly all practical aspects of cruising. While some sailors may disagree with how Annie and her spouse did some things, the proof of the pudding is in their accomplishing their goals and having fun while doing it.

A favorite in my Cruiser's Library

I bought many cruising related books and eventually bought and cruised a cutter for six months with my family in Mexico. After we came back to the States, I gave this one away, but am now buying another copy.
This book is inspirational. It shines a clear light on how one can cruise on almost any budget provided smarts and drive also exist. Given that smarts and drive are required to do any cruising, this book is special. It blends inspiration with good ideas and common sense.
If you have a realistic "do what it takes" attitude, and are concerned about finances, you'll like this one.

Food for thought, not only source

I found the information to be helpful and honest in opinion. I am restoring a sail boat and have been reading tons of books on all systems from electrical, mechanical, heating, cooking, efficiency, safety, etc and felt this book was helpful. It doesn't have all the answers, or cover all the choices, but the author shares what she knows in an honest manner and gives actual models and types of different items for comparison. I liked the female point of view as to ease of management, cleanliness of systems, & actual daily use efficiency. A heating system was rated high, but messy, which made author reluctant to use, I appreciated the candor. As I said....Food for thought, definately worth the price.

I really enjoyed this book. It has info on how to save money ashore and afloat. Solid advice based on experience. The lifestyle Annie Hill suggests is not for everyone, nor quite as inexpensive as it was to start in 1975, but well worth reading and considering. Voyaging on a Small Income has snippets of their cruising stories which help to keep the reader interested and to better illustrate Mrs Hill's points. My biggest gripe with this is the rather closed-minded view of other means of cruising that sometimes crop up in the writing, but as with most cruisers she has strong opinions and is willing to voice them. The second biggest issue is the publishing. Some chapter headers are missing the oversize capital letters that start each off and there is at least one table that is mis-formatted and hard to read. All in all, I recommend it for anyone interested in sailing and saving.

A very fun and easy read, entertaining as well as informative. Filled with lots of practical information about how to live efficiently, affordably, and safely. Even if you do not want to sail there is plenty to keep you interested while reading the story of Annie and "Badger" An excellent reference book relating how to live an adventurous life while spending very little.
