From Chapter 1: The Golden Mean is not so much a number as it is a relationship between a small part and a large part of any whole - a whole line, a whole shape, a whole volume, a whole time period, or a whole organizational function. What makes the relationship between the small part and the large part special is the specific proportion of one to the other, and of each to the whole. The unique "divided, yet unified" quality of this relationship provides the formula for the rendering of two fundamental universal patters: the pentagonal star and the equiangular spiral.
