About the Author
Manuel Mira was born in Portugal and lives in the Appalachians. His research has brought to light for the first time some of the missing pieces in the Melungeon puzzle. His work also presents several aspects of American and Portuguese history. The author has lived for extensive periods of time in three continents. This has given him considerable knowledge of the different groups of people with whom the Portuguese have integrated. His love for history and deep interest in social and community affairs gave him an opportunity to compile many years of experience and research into a book that will be a welcome addition to any library. Manuel Mira married to Lurdes for over 40 years, have a son and daughter and six beautiful grandchildren. Manuel is also the Chairman of an electronic manufacturing firm and as a hobby writes for Portuguese newspapers.

Great book for those who are interested in their Melungeon ancestors form NC, Virginia, Tennessee. I also read the The Forgotten Portuguese. Each has information the other doesn't contain. However some content is the same. Great pictures and easy to read and understand,

Do you love a good mystery? This book has three chapters on Melungeons and an eight page list of Appalachian surnames and their Portuguese counterparts. The rest of the book gives a lot of Portuguese history which might be or not be correct . Some people have disputed the correctness of the books history, accounts and facts.
My dna test shows that I do have Portuguese blood and Moorish blood. I have never been told that I had relatives of these extractions. I have not found any relatives who were Portuguese or Moors. There are Portuguese who match my mitrochondrial dna My family comes from Virginia , Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, South Carolina and Georgia.
I have no way of knowing if this book is right or wrong about Melungeons or anything else , but it is a very interesting book.
You will be presented facts and then you conclude based on the facts presented.
I found this book to be good and entertaining reading on both the Portuguese and the Melongeons.

I'm not a writer and I'm not a scholar...all I am is the daughter of two Portuguese immigrants. I never knew the history of Portugal until I read this book and I found myself in tears many times when reading this beautiful book about my wonderfully courageous people. It hurts me to read this book and know that no one acknowledges the Portuguese and their impact on the world. I guess because we are a small insignificant country we are not allowed to be the first people to find the new world. Well, when I have kids they will learn the truth about "Columbus". My children will know that their ancestors were the real Columbus'.
I recommend this book be read by all Portuguese living in America who were products of Portuguese immigrants. I will never be ashamed of who I am and where I came from..Thank you Mr. Mira for writing about this and trying to let the world know the truth about the Melungeons.
