Ms. Schott's book motivates one to take the first step of the research journey. Nicely laid out and easy to read. I would recommend reading it cover to cover and then re-read it when you are ready to take action. Then get you highlighter and post-its out to flag the pages and sections that lead you to helpful information on the internet and other named sources. You may only want to research your `roots' in the USA; however the author provides stories and tips from her numerous overseas experiences which can lend to a domestic journey. Maybe it is the child in the adult me, but I like the photos. They serve as a good reminder to document finding with photos and words too.

Has a few tips, but nothing you wouldn't be able to find yourself with a little online research. Would have like a bit more substance.

I thought "Visiting Your Ancestral Town" by Carolyn Schott was excellent. As someone who one day would like to travel to Ireland and my husband's ancestral town of Termini-Imerese, Sicily, I found this book extremely informative. It gave me so many ideas and tips. I love the way she describes the feelings that went along with her travels and how preparing/not preparing for it influenced her trip and those feelings.
I love her attitude that even a "bad" trip is a "good" trip. That it is what you make of it and the adventure itself. While the book is not a big one, about 88 or so pages, you will want to take your time and ponder each page and soak up the information Ms. Schott's is sharing with you.
I honestly feel this book is very worthwhile. It can save you a lot of worry and heartache by learning from her mistakes and using her tips. I especially liked the way she stressed to plan ahead, especially learning the locale of the time period of your ancestors if you are going on a Family History trip. I love the use of Maps in her book.
I look forward to reading more from Carolyn Schott.

Good things come in small packages. Genealogy has always intrigued me, but the overwhelming amount of information that one has to sift through and dissect, has kept me from putting anything more than my toe into those waters. Ms. Schott's book makes it seem possible to take the plunge. This little guide is filled with easy-to-understand and common-sense approaches to discovering those places that our ancestors called home. Stories of her own experiences, during quests in the "old country", added humor and a positive spin, especially when her well-laid plans went a little sideways. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Ms. Schott lays out in an easy to read format a fun and informative book about visiting your ancestral town. This book answers many of the basic questions many of us have such as why, when, and how, as well as what to expect and what to do when things go wrong. Adding her personal experiences and photos to the book made it more interesting for me. The planning tools she included will help make your adventure a success, no matter where your ancestral town is. I wish I would have read this book before I visited my ancestral town.
