Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
This book uncovers the biggest scientific fraud of our age. It tells the fascinating and frequently astounding story of how the massive enterprise to restructure the genetic core of the world's food supply came into being, how it advanced by consistently violating the protocols of science, and how for more than three decades, hundreds of eminent biologists and esteemed institutions have systematically contorted the truth in order to conceal the unique risks of its products–and get them onto our dinner plates.
Altered Genes, Twisted Truth provides a graphic account of how this elaborate fraud was crafted and how it not only deceived the general public, but Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and a host of other astute and influential individuals as well. The book also exposes how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was induced to become a key accomplice--and how it has broken the law and repeatedly lied in order to usher genetically engineered foods onto the market without the safety testing that's required by federal statute. As a result, for fifteen years America's families have been regularly ingesting a group of novel products that the FDA's own scientific staff had previously determined to be unduly hazardous to human health.
By the time this gripping story comes to a close, it will be clear that the degradation of science it documents has not only been unsavory but unprecedented--and that in no other instance have so many scientists so seriously subverted the standards they were trained to uphold, misled so many people, and imposed such magnitude of risk on both human health and the health of the environment.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2015Even if it didn’t deal with a topic of such surpassing importance, I would encourage everyone to read this book just on the basis of power of the logic and the clarity of the writing on display. Reading it, I felt privileged to be in the company of a man of such a rare combination of intellect and principle. Author Steven M. Druker, a public interest lawyer, builds his case in support of the book’s extended title systematically, chapter by chapter, until he has constructed an edifice of persuasion as solid as an Egyptian pyramid.
The nub of his argument is that genetically engineered (GE) food products, as brand new substances produced by a means that is radically different from traditional plant breeding, are on the market illegally because American law requires that such new products be extensively tested before they can be sold. To do the required testing over the extended time period required, however, would make the whole GE venture uneconomic, so the law has been skirted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The skirting has been done by treating GE foods (now generally called genetically modified organisms or GMOs, originally meant to be a euphemism because it sounded better than “engineered”) in the same way as we treat foods that have stood the test of time and are simply generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
Not only is it manifestly untrue that GMOs are GRAS, but through the discovery process in a lawsuit that he and a number of very knowledgeable scientists initiated, Druker learned that FDA administrators overruled their own scientific experts in declaring them GRAS. That is to say, GMOs have been treated as though they were no different from new plant varieties created by traditional methods when it is not true and the decision-makers at the FDA have known all along that it is not true. They are not recognized as safe even within the FDA, itself.
The big problem, according to Druker, is that in its early development stage in the 1980s, bioengineering was seen by the Reagan administration as the next big technological wave that the United States could catch, similar to the digital electronics revolution, that would help keep the country in the world economic forefront. With this business booster mindset, political leaders, in league with the avaricious owners of companies like Monsanto, have allowed politics and greed to trump science, and, indeed, to trump existing U.S. food safety law, in furtherance of the dangerous GE food agenda. Furthermore, blinkered members of the science community, who have apparently put their wetted fingers to the wind and have gone along enthusiastically with what can only be characterized as massive scientific fraud, have abetted them.
One can hear a good summary of Druker’s book in the excellent interview of the author by George Noory on the latter’s Coast to Coast AM program on YouTube. Many of the highlights are there, except that Druker doesn’t have time to go into the section of the book entitled “Another Continuing Trend: Research that Produces Disturbing Results Produces Nasty Attacks.” The danger of GMO foods is not just theoretical. It seems that almost every time GMO food products have been subjected to any sort of serious scientific test—of the type that would be required of them but for their illegal GRAS-pass, and of the type that the general public has been led to believe they routinely receive but don’t—these “disturbing results” tend to show up:
• Male rats fed a variety of Bt maize developed by Monsanto for the Egyptian market differed from those fed the non-GE control maize in organ and body weights and in blood chemistry, despite the fact the control plants were the parental variety and were grown next to their engineered relatives. The differences were detected after 45 days and after 91 days, several toxic effects were measured, including abnormalities in liver cells, excessive growth of intestinal membranes, congested blood vessels in the kidneys, and damage to cells that are essential to sperm production.
• Feeding another type of Bt maize to both young and old mice was associated with a marked disturbance of the immune system and of biochemical activity.
• When mice were fed for five consecutive generations on GE triticale (a hybrid of wheat and rye) their lymph nodes enlarged and the number of some important immune system cells significantly decreased.
• Rabbits that consumed GE soybeans had adverse changes in enzyme function in their hearts and kidneys.
• Mice that ate GE soybeans for two years displayed indications of acute liver aging in comparison to those fed on non-GE soy.

Druker has many examples of the nasty attacks that been made upon scientists who have come up with such disturbing findings. One such example can be found online in the case of world-renowned expert on food safety, Dr. Arpad Pusztai. In Britain, where Dr. Pusztai lives and works, the authorities are as much under the thrall of the biotech promoters as they are in the U.S. The British version of GRAS is the principle of substantial equivalence, which is invoked for GMO foods there and gives them a pass from long-term testing before they are allowed on the market. Dr. Pusztai was suspended from his position at the prestigious Rowett Institute for objecting to that policy on national television because of what he had found with his own tests.
The Central Role of the News Media
From the JFK assassination to 9/11 and many other important matters that we have looked into, it all comes down to the corruption of the opinion-molding profession, primarily the news media. Druker’s Chapter Eight, entitled “Malfunction of the American Media” (subtitled “Pliant Accomplices in Cover-up and Deception”) explains in great detail how what a large percentage of the educated American public--including scientists--believe about GMOs is so completely at odds with the truth. They have been duped by the news media's massive propaganda campaign. Actually, the subtitle of the chapter is much better than the title. By their lights, the media are not malfunctioning at all. You name the outrage, and there they are, pliant accomplices to the cover-up and the deception. However mistitled, that chapter alone is worth the price of the book.
When I wrote a poem entitled “Boomerang” back in the 1970s, with vague foreboding about the course of technology, I had in mind some cataclysm related to nuclear physics—and the Fukushima disaster keeps reminding us that I might be right—but after having read Altered Genes, Twisted Truth, I now fear that the disaster might just as easily have its origin in the field of molecular biology.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2015This book is truly as Jane Goodall says one of the most important works on the subject to date.
Druker has done amazing research and pulled together information from all sources to tell the story. I guess it takes a lawyer to do something like this justice so to speak. I came to the conclusion as I have: that Steven Druker is upholding the finest traditions of science.
The FDA claims that GM foods are generally regarded as safe and thus require no testing before being marketed to the public.
But the information that Druker uncovers the agency's own files through a lawsuit revealed that it ignored and covered up the concerns of its own scientists.
The evidence further shows how the agency assured consumers that GE foods are just as safe as naturally produced ones - and that their safety has been confirmed by solid scientific evidence - despite the fact it knew that no such evidence existed. Druker exposes the lies and the coverups in the highly informative and very readable work.
Chapter 4 alone is worth the price of the book and by the time you finish that chapter you will have a better understanding of the process of genetic engineering than most biologists and enough information to demolish any argument that genetic engineering is just another form of the same plant cross breeding or hybridization humans have been doing for centuries. It is not and after this chapter you understand why it is not.
This book documents the total corruption of the biological sciences and exposed the many lies routinely told by advocates of the technology. Druker fully documents that fact that in no other instance have so many scientists so seriously subverted the standards they were supposed to uphold, misled so many people, and imposed such of risk on both human and environmental health.
And to top it all off they KNOW the damage that this is doing to people and the environment it is clear from their own literature.
This is without doubt the biggest scientific fraud of our age and Druker presents his argument clearly with massive and overwhelming background data.
I highly recommend this book, it is very readable, thorough, logical and thought-provoking. Even those like me who are scientifically grounded and consider themselves to be well informed on the subject can learn much from this book.
Druker describes how the agency's politically appointed managers ignored the extensive warnings of their own scientists about the unusual hazards of these novel products all in the name of promoting commerce.
The book is weighted towards the violations of the law the FDA, USDA and the EPA are allowing Monsanto et al to get away with, and yes the violations are egregious, in my view that does not go far enough. Druker's presents the foundation of what could be a criminal case against the players. He documents how the FDA allows Monsanto and the rest to actually break the law is putting out potentially dangerous products with zero actual testing.
Druker pulls no punches and anyone GM friend or foe needs to read this book, since many friends of GM have been lied to to over the decades and do not even understand the science themselves. The science gets deeper than Druker recounts here but by reading chapter 4 you will have a good understanding of the technology and why it is so dangerous and why it needs to be banned before it too late.
If I were to come up with a single criticism it would be that Druker at times seems to go too easy on some of the scientists involved in the debate. For example in Chapter 4 commenting about Eric Grace and and his quest to to "find out what was going on". Druker points out: (discussing the use of the cauliflower mosaic virus as a genetic promoter and few scientists realized this was necessary)
"If a biologist who extensively studied genetic engineering in order to write a book about it for the National Academy Press, and who evidently remained keenly interested in the topic over the subsequent sixteen years, had not learned one of the crucial facts that render GE foods different from their conventional counterparts, how much more confused must the average citizen be?"
I have to say here, that I as a non-biologist was aware of the need for such a promoter, and all the consequences of having any gene expressed 100% of the time with none of the normal regulation seen in the cell, then there is no excuse for someone of Graces qualifications and interest to be ignorant of that fact. If he truly was not aware then I have to say he not much of a scientist. That makes Graces work more propaganda than a balanced view of the science no matter who edited it.

ArranReviewed in Canada on June 18, 20155.0 out of 5 stars An amazing expose of GMOs
An amazing expose of GMOs, with a glowing endorsement by planetary hero, Dr. Jane Goodall!
I'm reading "Altered Genes, Twisted Truth" by Steven Druker. Anyone interested in the facts behind GE or GMO foods and how they were able to proliferate globally, must read this book, based on secret FDA files on the development of GMO crops. It reads like a fast paced crime novel, but it's also heavy with facts, quotes and conversations with many eminent American scientists who dared to buck the system. The author and lawyer Steven Druker successfully sued the US FDA to have these formerly top secret documents released. In this meticulous book, with a forward by Jane Goodall, Druker explodes a host of myths and lies about the safety and efficacy of GMO foods. Druker has a sound scientific background as well. One of the shockers he uncovered was that government and Monsanto-backed scientists rammed through deregulation and fast track approval of GMOs with no objective independent safety or environmental risk studies of GMO crops, their effect in human health and long term impacts to the environment. Druker quotes a number of the world's leading scientists who were demanding safety and ecological studies before releasing alien species into the food chain, but they were muzzled and suppressed.
There has been massive collusion between governments, the huge pesticide companies, agribiz and their bought and paid for scientists.
I highly recommend reading "Altered Genes, Twisted Truths". You will be amazed and shocked by what you read. And you will develop a great deal of clarity and understanding on this formerly obtuse and difficult to understand technology which, with the massive use of carcinogenic glyphosate herbicide (which the GMO crops are artificially engineered to withstand), are poisoning our world and significantly diminishing the quality of life. We've got to stop this before it's too late.
JohnReviewed in Spain on November 14, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Expertly documented and highly recommended
Although it gets very technical at times for the average reader it is a SUPERB testimony to the GMO scam from an empirical, scientific viewpoint. If you had any doubts as to how GMOs are ruining the lives of millions, you won't have any after reading this.
Ian P.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 23, 20155.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book with International Significance
A must read book that has true international significance for anybody concerned about their own, and their family members, health and wellbeing.
Steve Druker points out that "what Monsanto wanted (and demanded) from the FDA was a policy that projected the illusion that its foods were being responsibly regulated but that in reality imposed no regulatory requirements at all". That "the US Coordinated Framework for Biotechnology Regulation is based principally in political criteria, not solidly based in science as its proponents claimed."
He graphically explains how if the law "had been obeyed there's little likelihood that any GE food would have entered the nation's kitchens", the FDA has itself " been willfully violating it (the law) for two decades" and "The FDA's policy on GE foods has survived only through widespread confusion". Furthermore, "in addressing the risks posed by genetic engineering, there has been regulatory irresponsibility on a global scale".
Additionally "in its handling of the Pusztai incident, the UK government demonstrated it also desired the disabling of research that could damage the image of biotech - and was just as willing as the US government to effect this in a ruthless manner. Accordingly, although Pusztai's research had been funded by the Scottish government, and was supposed to establish a sounder protocol for future studies on GE food, when it produced embarrassing results, the central goverment shut it down and made sure those engineered potatoes would yield no further distasteful discoveries."
That "due to a malfunction of the American media, false notions about GE foods continue to prevail. Even though the managers of mass communication have been given incontestable evidence of government fraud that's a reckless gamble with public health, they've consistently failed to report it"
This book leaves no doubt whatsoever that the American population, and those in other nations, are now directly standing into danger. The words of 2 American Presidents seem rather apt:
"We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people". John F. Kennedy
“You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.” Abraham Lincoln
