NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • United States Senator Cory Booker makes the case that the virtues of empathy, responsibility, and action must guide our nation toward a brighter future.

Raised in northern New Jersey, Cory Booker went to Stanford University on a football scholarship, accepted a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, then studied at Yale Law School. Graduating from Yale, his options were limitless.

He chose public service.

He chose to move to a rough neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey, where he worked as a tenants’ rights lawyer before winning a seat on the City Council. In 2006, he was elected mayor, and for more than seven years he was the public face of an American city that had gone decades with too little positive national attention and investment. In 2013, Booker became the first African American elected to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate.

In
United, Cory Booker draws on personal experience to issue a stirring call to reorient our nation and our politics around the principles of compassion and solidarity. He speaks of rising above despair to engage with hope, pursuing our shared mission, and embracing our common destiny.

Here is his account of his own political education, the moments—some entertaining, some heartbreaking, all of them enlightening—that have shaped his civic vision. Here are the lessons Booker learned from the remarkable people who inspired him to serve, men and women whose example fueled his desire to create opportunities for others. Here also are his observations on the issues he cares about most deeply, from race and crime and the crisis of mass incarceration to economic and environmental justice.

“Hope is the active conviction that despair will never have the last word,” Booker writes in this galvanizing book. In a world where we too easily lose touch with our neighbors, he argues, we must remember that we all rise or fall together—and that we must move beyond mere tolerance for one another toward a deeper connection: love.

Praise for United

“An exceedingly good book, and an important book, and a reminder of what makes Booker an important and, through it all, a promising public figure.”

“What sets Senator Booker’s work apart from that of similar political books is that it seeks to elevate discourse rather than bring down opponents of the opposite partisan persuasion. This is a refreshing take, one that is truly worthy of study and contemplation.”

Great autobiography depicting love and devotion of public service

Great autobiography depicting love and devotion of public service
I truly enjoyed CB’s book for its depicting of love and devotion of service. The audio style was engaging due to the smoothness of his vocal tone and I appreciated his articulate monologue which made me feel the enjoyment he experienced by doing his own narrative. There were small bouts of comic wit which kept me involved in the storyline which I noticed from his public oratory is also a notion of his personality.I appreciated the initial quotations of inspiration from each chapter which tied in with the ideology of each chapter. The beginning of his journey starts out with the self-discovery by tracing his ancestral history and how his family overcame prejudice (read the book to find out). What I found most memorable during the entire novel is how humble he lived his life with the desire and compassion to fix all problems that came to his attention. Through his empathy, he made priority the issues of his local community and later took on major challenges in the city of Newark, NJ. I became intrigued as I read about his journey to undertake government officials, street thugs, which he took head on, that resulted him becoming a hometown hero! What impressed me, while he was mayor, was his commitment to expand and reform ex-offender re-entry programs. I learned and understood where his fascination of the criminal justice system stemmed and why it is still one of the biggest legal issues that he maintains to fight for legal reform as a US Senator. On a personal note, I realized from his educational endeavors that his goal of giving back to his community and living a life of servitude makes him proud of his Garden State, NJ. What I found most honorable is how he valued his familial foundation which was instilled through proverbs and teachings handed down from his parents, teachers, colleagues and favorite mentors. I even found myself taking down notes and applying them towards my lifetime goals for which I am grateful. Sometimes in life we get the strength we need from reading and being inspired by others who are not only paving the way but making a mark in our history. Most importantly, I respect his assertion to step out and advocate on issues that he has an undying passion for which resonated not just from his educational endeavors but from maintaining strong communal ties. I now understand why he has great loyalty to his home state and never stops bragging about it! The final chapter discusses his awareness and importance on the preservation of our environment for which I am also passionate about. Looking forward to witnessing and hearing more about his contributions not only on behalf of his home state but towards our governmental law making process.

Although I've known Cory for 14 years and have seen him speak probably a hundred times, this book was full of stories and ideas that revealed layers of history, beliefs and character that are new to me.

Significant and memorable in ways similar to Barack Obama's Dreams from My Father and Jonathan Kozol's Amazing Grace, this book expertly interweaves stories with policy and statistical data that illustrate, on the one hand, how civil rights crusaders made possible Booker's life of opportunity -- and on the other hand, how centuries of structural racism and disinvestment in our most vulnerable communities show up daily in the lives, bodies, and, all too often, deaths of those who aren't so fortunate. It is at once a primer on social/economic/racial/environmental justice, and also a glimpse of the stories, data and history behind how one of today's great leaders came to believe in and stand for what he does.

This book reminds me not just of why I've always believed in Cory, but also of why I, too, have felt passionately about understanding and leveraging my many privileges to ensure that every child has opportunities for a long, full life and that every human may live with dignity, safe from harm.

Of course, I personally appreciated the mentions of community court and ReLeSe as these were the most meaningful and enduring projects I am grateful to have been part of (and my best acronym to date). All in all, the book wove together masterfully, was both authentic and well researched, from the heart and grounded in objective truth.

What a great human being! I was a long time fan of freedom fighter John Lewis, and when he died I was looking for someone to fill the void his death left, and I found it in Cory Booker. What a wonderful man, and a great politician! He also turns out to be a pretty great, very entertaining writer, also!!

United is a powerful call for us to see ourselves in one another, to show kindness to each other every day, and to come together to work towards common goals. Most of the book highlights Sen. Booker's experiences interacting with the extreme challenges that exist in low-income, crime ridden areas, but also illuminates the courage and compassion of ordinary people who make extraordinary selfless fights for change. His advocacy for criminal justice reform, in which he sees room for political progress, embodies his call for compassion throughout the socioeconomic landscape. It is thrilling to see such a strong call for kindness in the US while partisan politics is so vitriolic and nasty. United is a reminder that even while there are stark differences between us, our human identity ought to supersede our hate. No man is an island: we stand not alone but on the shoulders of each other and those that have come before us.

My only criticism comes from the way in which I think the book was framed. Before buying it, I imagined it would be a deluge of evidence to support the idea that the best way to get something done in the political world is to treat other Congressmen and Congresswomen with compassion. However, it is less a book about political strategy and more about the particular experiences that Mr. Booker has had that has shaped his drive to advocate for the common good. While it is clear Senator Booker believes strongly in seeing the best of all people, he doesn't really engage in what would be most effective politically, which might be very important to many of us with utilitarian concerns about what is best for the most people. For example, it is possible that building off of the anger in the electorate will help more progressive candidates win, which would be good for many of the causes the Senator believes in. While not compassionate towards those in office, doing such a thing might create the best outcomes for people. I'm not sure if this is the case, but arguing for or against that claim is not the subject of United, and it is instead about his own personal path in becoming a compassionate and moral person.

Wonderful, Wonderful book. I highly recommend this book. Refreshing "Political" read. It makes you believe that Politicians are and can be honest and down to earth. In this Presidential year we can trust someone again. I do hope Senator Booker will run for Governor in NJ and all the way to the President of the United States.. This book is not about being a Republican or a Democratic, it is about the understanding of doing the right thing, and following your beliefs (and your gut feeling) My daughter is 14, and is in the 8th grade, she is being subjected to the "nasty" debates, I am going to have her read this book, and her father and I will sit down for dinner, yes, without her iphone and discuss the book. This book in my house won't just be read one time and put away on the bookshelf to gather dust, I will read it every time I start to feel angry or disappointed in our politicians. Thank You Senator Booker for being REAL.

Cory Booker seems to be putting his money where his mouth is, so to speak. He’s very well educated and could have done any kind of law he wanted. Instead, he moved into a poor neighborhood in Newark, NJ, intending to help the community. That he has done. He listened, learned, and took action on some of the toughest problems faced by these people: poverty, violence, racidivism, pollution, depression, and discouragement. I had to admire the way he approached these problems, coming up with things to try, instead of just throwing up his hands and giving up, as many other politicians have done. This is how he rose through the ranks to the US Senate. I learned a lot by reading his book. I hope more people embrace his determination to conquer, not run away from, some of these problems.

Senator Booker has authored a most unusual political book - in his highly personal reflections and analysis, Cory provides numerous real-life case studies, vignettes, historical perspectives and future scenarios all couched deeply in HOPE. This is an excellent resource of inspiration that politics and those who serve can still flourish and dream in an age of cynicism and hurt.

Cory Booker has led an interesting life to date. He is also quite willing to show his less than stellar times and can be hard on himself. As a senator, he shows how involved in doing the right thing he tries hard to be while many try to derail him. His morals and values are exactly what this planet needs and I wish him the very best in his endeavors. A thoughtfully-written book and one I enjoyed very much. I also listened to him as he was a speaker at The Food Revolution Summit and was very impressed!

5.0 out of 5 stars A President in the Making? Read this book and judge for yourself.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 29, 2016
Almost 8 years ago I read Barack Obama’s “Audacity of Hope”, conscious that it was the first book by an aspiring political figure I had read; why, I wondered, had I not been inspired to read anything similar by a British politician? United is my next, and therefore still only my second, book by a contemporary politician. Cory Booker, former Mayor of Newark, NJ, and now the (Democrat) junior senator for New Jersey, is also an African American politician. While he increasingly well known in the US, and is talked of as a possible running mate for Hillary Clinton, I don’t think I’d heard of him other than via the (American) Freakonomics podcast, which did an episode on him at the beginning of March, and had I think interviewed him a few time previously. He was billed as offering new approaches to achieve bipartisan approaches, having reached out to such right wingers as Newt Gingrich, Grover Norquist and Rand Paul. Trying to reduce the US’s massive prison population is the principal common ground.

Some of the facts quoted in the book, while not coming entirely as surprises, were jaw dropping. The size of the American prison population, the extent to which America’s black population is the focus of this attention, the extent to which being an ex-convict, or even just having been arrested, makes it so difficult to earn an honest living thereafter, the fact that the minimum wage for (tip-eligible) waiting staff is just $2.13 per hour, made me gasp with astonishment. The UK is, sadly, not as different as it might be, but God help us if we follow the USA further in some of the dark directions Cory Booker shines a light on.

Booker’s is an inspirational book. If only half of it is true then he is an immensely energetic and committed man. I find every reason to believe that very much more than half is true, with the caveat that Booker’s relentless positivity about the people he has met along his political way, his optimism for the future, and his willingness to admit past mistakes are written at least in part to demonstrate his suitability for future, higher office. He has erred, but he has learned; he made enemies, but he won (most of) them back as friends. These are not bad attributes in a politician, or a potential president – neither of the likely two contenders, at time of writing Trump and Clinton, seem to be very good at either of those things, and either seems likely further to polarise American politics.

I almost decided to award 4 rather than 5 stars because I had hoped for by way of techniques for working towards the unity that Booker espouses. He shows how he successfully reached out to his own community (which sounds like it was hard enough!), but it is rather light on how to he proposes to unite the Republican and Democrat on matters other than the burgeoning prison population. I had been expecting more, but despite that caveat this book is well worth the read.

Whether Mr Booker will be offered the position of running mate by Hillary Clinton, assuming she wins the nomination, and whether it’d be in his best interests to accept it, remain to be seen. I suspect that we will hear more of him, even on this side of the pond, and in the meantime I look forward to his guest appearances on Freakonomics and occasional posts on Facebook. He is a man unafraid to confront the world the way it really is and to strive to make it better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plainly written hope for the future
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2016
Cory Booker gives one hope that America isn't lost forever. If it can make it through the next 4-8 years then there are still those in the political system who understand that public service and self service are different things.

United talks not so much about the great things that Booker has done, although they are many, but more about those lesser known figures from the Newark, New Jersey community who have worked with far less acclaim to do the right thing by the neighbours, communities and city. This isn't a biography, but a collection anecdotes telling of his major influences and inspirations.

Through the lens of Booker's experience this is story of normal people going to unusual lengths to fight for equality, wellbeing and fair chance for all. That this book could inspire this white English, middle class reviewer to become more involved in community matters speaks volumes to the simple, powerful message that he has managed to convey.

Booker has spoken of how hard it was to write this book, but that isn't apparent from the writing which is assured, easy to read and well organised in a way that makes this ideal either to dip in and out of, or to finish in a single sitting. All the more impressive for that fact that is was written in the middle of the night whilst also working as an aisle crossing Democratic junior senator during the day.
