    Bill Gertz has performed a great service to the American people in writing this book. A reporter specializing in national security issues, Gertz chronicles how nations such as France, Germany, Russia and China have dangerous weapons and highly sensitive weapons intelligence into the hands of rouge, terrorist nations. He also provides an overview of many other problems America faces through the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

    "The transfer of dangerous weapons and related technology is the most significant threat to U.S. national security for the foreseeable future," states Gertz. But as Gertz documents, the "Axis of Evil" (Iraq, Iran and North Korea) have mightily benefited by the sales and transfer of weapons material and intelligence. This is an alarming development. Companies in nations we are allied with have endangered the U.S. and the rest of the world by giving weapons and information to dangerous, terrorist states. The motive seems to be sales profits. Unfortunately, as the sources cited in the book make clear, these friends of ours made little or no effort to prevent such transfers. In too many cases it appears that those respective governments were complicit in the transfers.

    Nations like Syria, Lebanon and Pakistan have also benefited from weapons sales and transfers from France, Germany, Russia and China. Gertz goes so far as to describe Lybia and Syria as "The New Axis of Evil." He devotes a whole chapter in discussing the recent activities of these two nations, solidly supporting his conclusion.

    As Gertz notes, a vast number of these transfers, by our friends and foes alike, were in direct violation of international treaties and agreements. Indeed, he even has a chapter on the failures of the U.N. and IAEA to tackle this serious problem. In some cases, rogue nations have used the international agencies and programs to further their own WMD programs.

    His book finishes with some conclusions and suggestions on how we can get even tougher in confronting the problem of WMD proliferation and military technology transfers. He recommends, among other things, the expanded use of covert action forces that can rapidly deploy and deal with actionable intelligence. Gertz also provides some positive analysis of a memorandum by Michael Pillsbury, which focuses upon new strategies for dealing with these matters.

    Gertz has conducted numerous interviews with top American defense and intelligence officials, including Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld. He has also had access to many classified documents and reports, supplementing much publicly available information that is all but ignored by Old Media. As a result, his book is well researched, solidly supported, highly informative, and extremely timely.

    The author has a background and contacts in intelligence circles. This is information that is not only interesting, but should get out beyond the readers of this book. Gertz carefully details with a lot of specifics how Russia, China, Germany, France, North Korea, and more work together to supply rogue nations and terrorist groups with weaponry. This is a must read if you want to get a broad horizon on the threats of the world today. This is the kind of information you won't get in the news, because it's too granular and complicated for the average newspaper reader, or television audience.

    This book reads like a national discourse rather than a political and security analysis. It is no secret that other nations are competing with the United States over diverging interests around the world. France and Russia had signed oil contracts with Saddam's Iraq prior to the American war in 2003 and it was only natural for them to stand up to defend their interests before the world community and in the UN.

    I personally have no petty for such imperial competition. What is more alarming, however, is the proliferation of WMDs throughout the world (not Iraq) and the ongoing arming of rogue states as well as terrorist gangs thanks to the conflicting agenda of imperial states such as France, Russia and the US. What these nations should be doing, instead, is coordinating their efforts to make the world a safer place and - even while they maintain their conflict of interests - understand that arms are no toys and that there could be no settlement of imperial scores by letting gangs roam the world killing civilians.

    Gertz, for his part, take Russia and France's activity as a personal offense, from an American perspective, instead of depicting it as an offense against humanity altogether. Such nationalist rhetoric never helps making the world a safer place but rather increases animosity among nations and widens the gaps in their opposing alignments.

    Here's another book to get you hot and bothered at night and boycotting French wine during the day.

    This is more sensationalist crap for the narrow-minded who think that America is unique in the exercising of power.

    Why does it surprise people that France, a rather large, advanced, nuclear country, would try to act for its own benefit? People want to say they 'betrayed' us, reducing internaitonal relations to a schoolyard game of manhunt or something.

    Countries act in their own interests. That's what happens. They don't act alone to uphold moral values, whatever that means. If you told an Iraqi peasant that his American 'liberators' were selling arms to Iran in the 80s and funding terrorists in other corners of the world, he might have some doubts. But if you tell an American that the French are conspiring against them, they're ready to shoot anyone driving a Peugot, after they change their 'French' fries to 'Freedom' fries.

    Another cable news McBook, the nuggets of wisdom on sale here can be digested at a bookstore in twenty minutes.
