Comeback America: Turning the Country Around and Restoring Fiscal Responsibility Hardcover – January 12, 2010
Purchase options and add-ons
As comptroller general of the United States and head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO)—"the nation's top auditor"—Walker warned Congress and the administration as the federal surplus became a giant deficit under George W. Bush. As president and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, he now works full-time to raise public awareness regarding mounting debt burdens being imposed on future generations. Comeback America is his crucial manifesto, a way for President Obama to end out-of-control government spending and reform our tax, retirement, health care, defense, and other systems—before it's too late.
Walker believes that by 2030, absent significant reforms to current government programs and policies, federal taxes could double from current levels, meaning less money and poorer education for kids—which will hurt families along with our nation's economic strength and position in the world. If our foreign creditors—such as China—decide to buy fewer of our Treasury bonds, interest rates will rise and cars and homes will become less affordable.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Comeback America shows how we can return to our founding principles of fiscal responsibility and stewardship for future generations. The book includes bold ideas to control spending, save Social Security, dramatically alter Medicare, and simplify the tax code—all taking into account the Obama Administration's current efforts, which receive never-before-published assessments both complimentary and critical.
Nonpartisan, nonideological, and filled with a love of the country its esteemed author has spent his life serving, Comeback America is a book for anyone interested in America's economic future—in other words, a book everyone should read.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2010Comeback America is one of the most riveting books that you will read on the importantant subject of the fiscal health of this country. One would be hard pressed to find anyone at any level who is more knowledgable than is former comptroller general of the United States, Dave Walker.
Our global economic issues have become so complex that even most of the top expert "watch dogs" in Washington did not see this financial tsunami coming. Thus, it is difficult to expect the average person to be able to fully grasp these matters, making it easy to become swayed by 30 second sound bites that are often based on ideology rather than facts. Comeback America takes these complex issues and presents them in an intelligent, concise way that resonates with more than just policy wonks.
I have long admired Walker's tenacity in promoting the award winning documentary IOUSA and his Fiscal Wake Up Tour and he was doing so long before the most recent crisis hit in the Fall of 2008. How differently things might have turned out if those inside the Beltway had stood up for the courage of their convictions the way Dave Walker has.
He pulls no punches in his assessment of the failures of those on both sides of the political spectrum and, importantly, proposes common sense solutions.
This book is a must read and should be required reading in all institutions of higher learning.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2010Must read. This information is necessary for every citizen to learn and understand. Our federal government is committing economic tyranny. Our debt and unfunded liabilities are unsustainable. It's time to pay up! If we don't stop spending trillions of dollars that don't exist our economy will enter a depression lasting decades. We have literally enslaved younger generations with debt. This is beyond immoral. It's time to wake up America! It's only getting worse. Democrats spend more and tax, Republicans spend and don't tax. It all ends up with the same massive debts and deficits. I don't agree with all of Walker's own suggestions to solve these obligations but many are very reasonable. I'd like to see Capital Homesteading programs promoted found on cesj.org. Capital Homesteading can provide a fundamental financial and institutional change to the system that gives people the means to acquire property without redistribution. It's a constitutional right that is totally ignored by both parties. Wage slavery needs to end, Ownership freedom needs to begin!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021Entitlements for medical care have shifted a large part of the economy from the private sector to the public sector. Everyone pays and virtually no one is directly responsible for medical costs. Walker is concerned that deficit spending will make the national debt reach levels that have long-term consequences. Congress has taken an oath to provide for the general welfare and common defense. Neither of these priorities can be met indefinitely if the dollar crashes. The US may have declining use of conventional military forces and be forced into reliance on the nuclear deterrent if budget and dollar value trends continue. This would tend to put America in a box. Without the capacity for effective and flexible use of power -- economic, social, diplomatic, and military -- American greatness may continue but in a different form. Ultimately, if foreign markets and foreign resources become disrupted the wealth and quality of life will gradually shift to more powerful nations, just as it shifted to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. The world has a finite amount of resources, in most economic sectors.
In this book Walker has used financial analysis and practical advice to create a blueprint for stability and prosperity. Since the publication some key areas have gotten worse. It is unknown how many Senators hear Mr. Walker on TV, view the interviews several times, or read his books, and see what the Peter G. Peterson Foundation is proposing. Democrats, who say they are aligned with working people and the poor, should pay extra attention, since Medicaid and Social Security, and other public services, are so vital to the nation's lower income people (approx. 40% of the population). Yet Democrats seem the least interested in fiscal reform and sustainability. Republicans have fluctuating views on the budget and it's hard to see where they stand. All Congressional districts are under some form of financial pressure. Wealthy individuals, families, and corporations ride a wave of debt. Their riches and power are completely reliant on US military dominance, or at least on the effectiveness of deterrence, achieved by both nuclear and conventional forces.
