Curing the Incurable: Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins Paperback – September 1, 2002

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 678 ratings

Several years ago the author, cardiologist Thomas E. Levy, MD, JD was asked to assist Hal Huggins, DDS, with a number of Dr.  Huggins' dental patients. Each of the patients was quite ill and obviously suffering with one or more very serious medical conditions. Prior to sedating each patient Dr. Huggins asked Dr. Levy to administer a specific protocol of vitamin C. Dr. Levy had never performed or even heard of such a practice, but was greatly impressed as each patient left the dental office markedly improved — many were asymptomatic. As a result, his interest in vitamin  C was greatly aroused and he began a search through all the medical literature for any studies concerning this vitamin therapy and the miraculous results he had witnessed time and time again. He quickly found the medical journals were filled with thousands of studies and articles about vitamin  C. Many of them reported similarly dramatic results with a myriad of diseases and other difficult medical conditions. Dr. Levy knew that this was information that all his colleagues needed. Consequently, he was compelled to spend the next four years researching and writing Curing the Incurable . Because this book was written especially for his medical colleagues, Dr.  Levy has taken great care to research, document, and report the vital truths about vitamin C — he cites over 1,200 scientific references. Curing the Incurable provides the information you need to most effectively use vitamin C to:

Please read this book! I have used ascorbic acid (AKA vitamin C) for years as well as the whole food Cataplex C from Standard Process (which is a real/whole vitamin C complex). I have heard Linus Pauling lecture on ascorbic acid and its value. The missing piece that this book fills in, however, is the vital information on how much to use! Wow! I had the flu and a bacterial infection in my lungs when I started reading the book. I ordered Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C from Amazon and got it the next day. The day before -- when I ordered it -- I could not even hold one sip of water down. The next day, however, I could. As soon as I found my bowel tolerance for both the ascorbic acid powder and the Lypo-Spheric C, my illness was gone. I mean it was like a light switch had been turned on. I went from tired, weak and achy to well. Now one caution. Once I felt well I knew i had to keep taking the Lypo-Spheric but I didn't. I relapsed a little the next day and so I again took mega doses of these products. and continued to take them at low levels for the next few days without relapse. I now keep both substances on hand for the family.

So the lesson is that there is a tipping point where some vitamin C is helpful, but where the right amount cures. This is the biggest takeaway in the book -- take the amount of liposomal or lypo-spheric vit C that cures your issue. There is no "dose" that everyone should take.

Another aspect of the book that is extremely important is what vitamin C can be used for. Basically anything viral, many bacterial infections, toxins, poisonings, and more. There are many case histories included. When the author wrote the book, the principle means of getting stellar results was to use intravenous (IV) and venous injected vitamin C along with oral vitamin C powders. In this latest edition of the book, Dr Levy introduces Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C at the end of the book and touts that it is more efficacious than IV C (with some reservations). For example, 5 g Lypo-Spheric is equivalent to 100 g IV vitamin C and 10 g Lypo equivalent to 250 g IV C. Dr Levy became involved with LivOn Labs Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C well after he had written the earlier editions of this book. The story is online.

I have since found out that you must have zinc and copper already in your body for vitamin C to work. The ascorbic acid will not work without these 2 minerals. I found this out with a major failure trying to cure a flu with vit C and could not make a dent in it. I just got worse. I did some looking and reading and found the connection between vit C and zinc and copper. I now make sure I always have these minerals in reserve. I take more if I have to take a lot of ascorbic acid. I speculate that the difference between why vit C sometimes works and other times does not (in trials/tests) is a result of the amount or lack of amount of these two minerals.

Curing the Incurable, Vitamin C, Infectious Disease and Toxins by Thomas E Levy MD JD

Written with an eloquent flowing style, this book makes the case for Vitamin C as a remarkable medicine that has been overlooked by the medical establishment. Although the crowning achievement of modern medical science is the invention of antibiotics which cures bacterial infections, we have no antibiotics effective for acute viral illness.

Dr. Levy says this is incorrect because Vitamin C is a curative "antibiotic" for viral diseases when used properly in high enough dosage by IM or IV route.

Dr. Levy's book makes a number of points:

1) Vitamin C is not really a vitamin needed in trace amounts, it is needed in large amounts as a co-factor in oxidation-reduction reactions in the cellular biochemistry.

2) All animals, with the exception of primates, have the enzymes to make their own vitamin C. They do not need to consume Vitamin C in their diet, they make their own.

3) All humans (and primates) lack this final enzyme for the manufacture of vitamin C, and therefore we must consume Vit C in our diet. We have a genetic deficiency in GLO gulano-lactone-oxidase, the final step for the manufacture of vitamin C.

4) Because of this genetic defect, we all have a subclinical Vitamin C deficiency making us more susceptible to infectious diseases.

5) The 60 mg dosage RDA for vitamin C is adequate to prevent scurvy but is insufficient for optimal health.

6) Adequate human "Opti-Doses" of vitamin C based on animal studies is in the range of 3-5 grams per day, and this requirement increases during periods of stress or infection.

7) IV or IM Vitamin C in the appropriate dosage ranges has been clinically proven to cure acute viral diseases such as polio, acute hepatitis, measles, mumps, chickenpox, shingles, viral encephalitis.

The most amazing evidence presented in the book is the work of Frederick R Klenner, a doctor in North Carolina who cured 60 of 60 acute polio cases with IM or IV vitamin C and published his findings in Southern Medicine & Surgery, Volume 103, Number 4, April, 1951, pp. 101-107. Klenner wrote more than 20 other publications. Polio vaccine was introduced shortly afterwards, and Klenner's work with Vitamin C was simply ignored.

Because of the unconstitutional FDA ruling which prohibits Vitamin C manufacturers from informing the public, very few people are aware of this research showing the incredible benefits of vitamin C.

Missing from the book is the fact that most commercially available Vitamin C products contain a mixture of unbuffered L and R isomers of vitamin C, an inferior product. The buffered 100% L-ascorbate version of Vitamin C is vastly superior. Also missing from the book is a discussion of the Linus Pauling protocol for prevention of heart disease with Vitamin C, proline and lysine.

I have had numerous conversations about vitamin C with other doctor friends, and colleagues I have known for 25 years, and invariably any comment about Vitamin C is met with ridicule, laughter, and disbelief. Sadly, that is the current state of the medical establishment. Perhaps Dr. Thomas Levy's book will serve to change this, and one day soon, mainstream medicine will embrace a remarkable medicine that has been overlooked.

Appreciate that the author speaks in a way the layman can understand.
Wish that the FDA and the AMA would read and promote the information provided, instead of pushing BIG Pharma.

I am writing this critique sooner than I should, but even with what I have read so far, this is a very important book for anyone's library. The fact that it can cure so many problem situations and is backed up by so many scientific references makes this book very valuable. Dr. Klenner and Linus Pauling deserve a great deal of credit and applause for providing educational access to people in need of medical self help.
