- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2005I notice some lengthy vitriolic reviews mixed in with enthusiastic raves. People who hate Clinton are going to hate Madeline Albright. She was his choice for Secretary of State and I think she did him and our country proud. She was the right woman at the right time. With the Balkans one of the hottest spots in the world, her personal experience with its problems and her ability to speak its languages helped the United States to exercise leadership in finding solutions.
She was Clinton's right hand as they struggled to help the Israelis and the Palestinians reach an accord. Since they left office, the effort seems to have been abandoned.
Her book is down to earth and detailed. She was and is a straight shooter. It is much easier for women who take a male path to success. Not Madeline, she was first a wife and mother and only later a diplomat.
She had, and still has a life outside of her job and shares that with us. She has shown that she is capable of being very tough, but never callous. She suffered the pain of divorce and discovered, only after she was in office, that her family had hidden their Jewish roots. She deftly communicates both her experiences and her feelings. No wonder the rave reviews are so often from women. Count me as one.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2023This well-written book covers a great deal of Madeline Albright 's life, most of it, obviously from the title, her years as Secretary of State. I gave the book four stars, rather than five, because it was a little difficult to follow all the world leaders. However,it was interesting and informative, and definitely depicts the many challenges faced by world leaders.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2009I bought "Madam Secretary" almost five years ago, and only read it recently, during my holidays. I now regret not having done so before, but then, it is always best to do something late than never at all.
Madeleine Albright, the first woman to become Secretary of State in the United States, shares with us the story of her life, and a look behind closed doors regarding events that we can already find in the pages of history books. In this book you will find the kind of details regarding her professional life that will allow you to understand things like the dynamics of high stakes negotiations, or the important role that humor plays when trying to avoid direct confrontation.
In her collaboration with Bill Woodward, Albright manages to engage the reader, and even make him laugh. Can you help but smile when you read that "The mood was good - deceptively so. The summit would rapidly deteriorate into an exercise similar to the herding of cats"? Or fail to appreciate Albright's self-deprecating humor when she said to the Security Council that action on an issue had to be delayed until she received orders from Washington, because "The issue will not be decided until the fat lady sings"?
On the whole, "Madam Secretary" is a book that I loved. In my opinion, it is a very good choice for people who like to read witty and well-written autobiographies, but a particularly special treat for those that are also interested or working in the field of International Relations. Highly recommended...

- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2020I always admired Madeliene Albright as SOS, but it was across news reports and/or TV interviews. I'm late to the game just reading this now, however i felt like a friend listening to another friend tell her life's story. I found the personal stories so touching and made her human. I believe it also helped shape her thinking and decision making. I was a young professional during her time in politics and more focused on my career and family than DC or the world around us. This book was history, non-fiction novel and romance story all rolled into one. It was a fabulous read, which I could barely put down. Can't wait to read some of her other works.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2004I wish I hadn't put off reading this book. I never imagined I would enjoy it so much.
I would have never thought a political novel would keep me anxious for every page, but hers did. I enjoyed the mix of serious commentary and humor. Although it seems that she could have written more in some places it does seem candid overall.
Albright's writing style is very comfortable. She sticks to the point and presents her thoughts clearly. I felt as if I was being told stories by my own grandmother. I have a newfound respect for Albright as a role-model for todays young women.
I especially enjoyed her personal accounts of the "non-public" side of several world leaders.
I see some reviewers complain that this book didn't have enough hard hitting politics, but it does say it is a "memoir." I wasn't looking for policy choices or political analysis, I was looking for history from the point of view of one woman on the inside, and I found just that.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2014I thought I knew about Madeleine Albright and her time at the State Dept. I clearly did not know very much. This book was written in a very personal way to give us a full picture of Ms. Albright or Madeleine as I feel I should call her now. As it turns out, she was not always so self confident and polished. She was a wife and mother before she was a diplomat and got her start in politics through doing volunteer work in Washington -- who knew. The book was long and went into a bit too much detail about the issues she faced at the State Dept but it was very interesting to get more details than one would get in the newspaper. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will probably read her other books too.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2024Interesting biography on an interesting woman. I liked all the background information on her.

I've read her book about growing up in Prague and the family's flight to England during the Second World War. She is honest, very fair in her views (I was born in London and grew up there during the war years), full of interesting stories. An elegant lady. This book is no less interesting, or, rather, arresting. She writes well, even with some help. I only read one chapter but looking forward to going back to it. A keeper in my library

A fascinating book -- I had no idea until recently that Madeleine Albright was Czech -- her father was a Czech diplomat but not overly popular with his government because he was enthusiastic for democracy. He succeeded in getting his family into the US so Madeleine attended school in the US and then then studied journalism. Ms Albright married into an "aristocratic" family and the strange thing for me was that Ms Albright might never have been offered her role with the UN or later invited to become Secretary of State if her husband hadn't left her when she was in her forties. . . .
In between chapters that show how her professional life unfolded are great sections explaining what happened in Africa with the ethnic cleansings, Bosnia, Iran and Iraq, and so on. All round a great book.I read this on Kindle but I would choose print if I were giving this as a gift -- because much of the value of this sort of book is in the Index which doesn't work in Kindle.

Claus WolfReviewed in Germany on December 12, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Nicht jede Autobiografie von Politikern taugt was, diese gefiel mir gut
