I have waited nearly two years to find this as a used edition, because it's no longer in print. Previously sellers have wanted prices above $100.00 for it. It's part of a six volume set that was published by the National Genealogical Society with each book being published separately. I now have the complete set, and this book is, by far, the most important book of the set.
In trying to compare this book, I would like to share that I own 73 genealogy books and have read all of them. I have read another 54 volumes that I have borrowed from the local library. As for a comparison, I would suggest Sharon DeBartolo Carmack's book, Organizing Your Family History Search: Efficient & Effective Ways to Gather and Protect Your Genealogical Research (Cincinnati, OH: Betterway Books, 1999). It's somewhat familiar with Fleming's book, and I honestly couldn't say which one is better. They are both great, and do an excellent job at suggesting ways to organize yourself if you are a family historian.
I have been following some suggestions from Carmack's book, and have found them most useful. I have done so for several years, and wish I had had it when I first became a genealogist. Since reading Fleming's book twice, I have already added things that she has suggested to the way I operate. It's a great and practical resource guide. In fact, you should get all 6 of the volumes of this set. They are worth reading and having around for reference.

Whether just beginning or a researcher for 25+ years, this has tips and guidance that will become very useful tools. It has simple explanations for what to do and why it helps, and it offers choices based on how different people do their research, with the pros & cons for each.
I've been a researcher for many years, and bought this thinking it might provide a few new tips. The initial things are so clear and simple that my first thought was that I had bought a book only useful to beginners. But the further I went into the book, the more it became apparent how much I could improve my own research and file system. This is a surprisingly useful book.
Here I find logical systems that I had only partly accomplished. I keep seeing ways to improve my own files and ways to improve my research techniques.
These are all very well thought out and well presented. They start so simply that beginners can understand useful ways to do their files and manage their interviews & research. And it will have seasoned researchers saying 'Why didn't I learn this earlier in my life?"
I highly recommend this book, it is well worth more than the cost. You will be surprised at how very useful it is. If you are a veteran researcher, it will help logically untangle the sea of paper, notes, and accumulated genealogy bits & pieces that pile up over the years. And that will improve your research. Excellent book, extraordinarily well done.

This book needs a major update, and it is a bit over-written, but digs into organizational techniques for family history research. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the author admits right up front that she doesn't use computer programs much. This is why I'd love to see it updated to integrate both paper handling and computer technology as most are doing both.

If you have the 'privilege' of being the Family Historian, you probably already know that this assignment is one filled with papers, memorabilia, and a great variety of research projects. Organizing everything from relics to newspaper articles, to your own findings in the local (or distant!) town, village and city court houses and special places of records, is a daunting task.
This book helps prepare you for this assignment, and gives you many printed forms and spreadsheets you can print (from the enclosed CD) to organize these many tasks.
The book is easy to read, and reference. Specific steps are outlined clearly and concisely. The book opens the door to many other resources available, also.
Note: The 2004 version is the first edition, and has been exhausted from the book store's shelves. The cost of this book is steadily climbing. If a 2nd printing is not offered soon, the present supply of good used books will become even more precious!
