Nothing Changes Until You Do: A Guide to Self-Compassion and Getting Out of Your Own Way Hardcover – January 1, 2014

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 278 ratings

After three years of living his dream as a professional baseball pitcher, Mike Robbins had an arm injury that benched him for good, and when this happened, everything changed. He had to figure out who he was without the identity of “baseball player”—a process fraught with emotional highs and lows—and he quickly realized that the self-criticism and self-doubt he was feeling are in fact epidemic in our culture. Too often we base our value on our external world—our jobs, finances, appearance, or various other factors. Even the most successful people struggle with their relationship with themselves. In Nothing Changes Until You Do, Mike looks at this delicate relationship and brings to light a new way to look at life, opening your eyes to your innate value.     These 40 inspiring essays, which are real tales from Mike’s own life and the lives of his clients, boil down some of the most important lessons Mike has learned on his own personal journey—and as he’s traveled throughout the country for over a decade speaking to groups of all kinds. With themes spanning from the importance of trusting yourself to the benefits of vulnerability to the strength inherent in embracing change, this book shows you how to get out of your own way and make peace with yourself. With humor, authenticity, and ease, Mike illustrates that with a little self-compassion and a healthy dose of self-acceptance, anyone can turn away from the negatives that manifest because of a critical self-perception—things like unkindness, insecurity, addictions, sabotaged relationships, unnecessary drama, and more.     Making peace with yourself is fundamental to happiness and success. So join Mike and learn to have more compassion, more acceptance, and more love for yourself—thus giving you access to more compassion, more acceptance, and more love for the people (and everything else) in your life.

Book is upside down and backwards, will need to turn the page to right and read right page then left. And it’s published upside down… words are to the edge of page… just wrong. Very annoyed

Mike Robbins is a compassionate person and a wonderful author. He's done a lot of work, both self-help and helping others in the last 16 years since I met him. This latest book is a must-have if you're interested in personal progress. Mike writes in a style that is easy to read and down-to-earth. The format is super user-friendly. You can open it up anywhere and glean valuable insights and incentives to practice. Each page is its own little gem of wisdom. And the bottom line is that it is empowering. Mike lovingly moves you out of victim mentality and into the driver's seat so you can shift perspective and step into your power. This book is one of those books you buy a bunch of to keep around and give out to your friends -it's not likely to come back if you just lend it out! Thanks, Mike!

Good book...authentic. One thing I would add would be Celiac affects people. Hair loss/miscarriage/Bipolar/cancer/ depression and more may be due to Celiac. Tests may not work to diagnose it. Low sunlight may cause less laughing/cry easily...cause Celiac. No gluten/dairy/soy/sugar/GMO/food with a label....vitamins/good oils/minerals...probiotics...LDN..detoxing may help brain/body/personality/depression/health issues fast and then life can be happy/healthy. Interesting book/has some good insights. Thanks for writing the book.

I am a huge Mike Robbins' fan. I received his book as a gift after hosting him as a speaker and enjoyed it's simple but meaningful messages. It's an easy read and is enjoyable storytelling. For anyone looking to be more authentic or grow out of your comfort zone this is for you.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about
    - How to be compassionate with yourself and tips how to do that
    - How to ask for what you want - the answer is always no until you ask.
    - How to take more risks that lead to greater reward. Big risks get easier with practice. Being vulnerable is risky. Change how you approach or think of risks and you will see change with you and everything around you.

I really like Mike Robbin's latest book. While his other two books are excellent as well, this one really is written at a whole new level. Perhaps it is the essay format versus the how-to format, but the feel is much deeper with Nothing Changes Until You Do. The stories and the tips for using the insights gained from Mikes observations and wisdom really hit home. The format allows one to pick up and read any of the essays and take in a lot of wonderful wisdom. It is like going to a dessert table and choosing from so many great desserts. The author's style is to write a very transparent and conversational book and that comes across very well here. This is a book to be treasured on your book shelf and can be shared with your whole family, especially with kids if you have them.

After finishing the book Nothing Changes Until You Do, I had this 'AHA' moment where I realized each of the 40 chapters are like a yoga pose for the mind & soul -- actions both internal and external that are simple, but not always easy. Mike dynamically illustrates the balance and imbalance in each pose (or chapter) through authentic stories and clear action steps. He invites us to stretch, reach and get out of our comfort zone while taking each life pose in a more efficient manner. All 40 chapters integrate into a beautiful practice. I know Amazon categorizes this as a book, but I can say it's more. I hope you find the AHA moment as well when you read the book. Enjoy!
