Lessons about the prehistorical populating of the planet

This is the first book that I have ever given 5 stars. It is the book that I have been wanting to read for years. Of course, it could not have been written years ago because much of the research on which it is based results from new advances in DNA technology that are revolutionizing prehistory research. The strength of this book to me is the effort to integrate findings from DNA, linguistics and archeology into coherent pictures of the various movements of people to populate our world. To me, the book fits the niche between the academic treatise and the general public reader. The evidence presented for each case is thorough enough but not overwhelming to the point of being boring. The organization is geographical, but there are significant numbers of crossreferences. And there are footnotes and a bibliography, but they do not intrude on the text.
The author presents a lot of opinions in this book, but those are labeled as opinions and presented with facts to bolster his arguments. This is a work of a developing science. Undoubtedly, some of those opinions will be wrong. Time and more research will help us sort out which are right. However, I think this book is very timely. I liked it enough that I shelled out for a paperback copy for my wife to read (she does not read on a Kindle). The hard copy should also allow me to see better some of the figures in the book (my biggest personal complaint about reading on the Kindle).

First Migrants is a very comprehensive treatment of an extremely complex and important phase of human cultural evolution. It is one of the rare books that partially succeeds in answering the big question: Why the hell are we here and how did we get here, without resorting to religious myths and fairy tales about creation. The book necessarily delves deeply into the details of the early human movements that brought us to where we are. The reading require focus, but it's worth the effort if you want a better understanding of the "big picture." This amazing travelog appears to be a "prequel" to Bellwood's earlier books -- which I cannot wait to read.

REVIEW - First Migrants: Ancient Migration in Global Perspective by Peter Bellwood

"First Migrants" is an amazingly detailed survey of current (2014) knowledge in the migrations of early man. Peter takes into account not only the traditional stone arts, but also DNA data from both the male and female lines, language data, anthropological data of the skeletons, geological data, archeological data, ancient climate data, and plant histories to assimilate a fascinating tour de force on how and why mankind moved over the face of the earth in the prehistory era. Peter starts in and frequently returns to Africa and searches there for man's first homeland and the further moves inside Africa. From there Peter takes the reader on a detailed appraisal of how and why mankind moved from place to place, cross The Middle East, cross Asia, cross into Australia, cross the Pacific Islands, cross into the Americas.

The book is well and very clearly written. The many maps are clear and show their intended wisdom. Photographs and diagrams are near non-existent, but not really needed.

There are a few gaps in the history, as told. But as the Peter Bellwood portrays, these are gaps in knowledge and research and field studies. Some areas are difficult to obtain access, such as the Middle East and parts of Central Asia. Some areas have not preserved perishable artifacts such as jungles or later submerged areas. Some cultures did not leave persistent footprints. Some later people have overwritten the history of previous peoples. Some areas like Northern Europe have been well covered in other books. Besides, there is far too much knowledge to squeeze into a single book.

Especially interesting in the first and last chapters is the discussion of the technics and rational of research into early man. And throughout the book Peter discusses the how of knowing what we know.

Overall this is a good read for anyone interested in the early history of mankind. This is a etailed, readable discussion of early man movements cross the face of the Earth

A good textbook, but as an amateur I was looking for an easier read.

A textbook for Archaeology 101 or Ethnology 101, but not for the casual History amateur. Jared Diamond was better at explaining the complexity of this field to the wider audience, even if parts of his work now gets contradicted by later research. Maybe that was not Peter's goal, but in my opinion we need more authors like J. Diamond, K. Massie, B. Tuchman etc... to bring History to the wider audiences and help fight ignorance. 3 stars because I think it's a good book though not adapted to my needs.

Good Review of Human Migrations through History

Highly recommended. The author provides very interesting insights about historical migrations based on recent advances in linguistics, archaeology and genetics. The volume suffers somewhat from too wide a coverage both geographically and temporally, but it is a very good review/introduction to the subject and accessible to the interested non-specialist. Any limitations are compensated for by Dr. Bellwood's outstanding scholarship and his vigorous, well-argued positions on some of the associated academic disputes. (e,g,, he is a firm advocate of the controversial theory that the Indo-European languages developed in/spread from Anatolia at a very early date, not the steppes of Southwestern Russia.)
