Animal Farm Paperback – May 1, 2009
This is a classic tale of humanity awash in totalitarianism. A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. First published during the epoch of Stalinist Russia, today it is clear that wherever and whenever freedom is attacked, and under whatever banner, the cutting clarity and savage comedy of Orwell's masterpiece is a message still ferociously fresh.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2024Thanks to finishing ANIMAL FARM, I have now read all of Orwell’s fiction. Of course, 1984 is my favorite, and by far the most profound. But I really like KEEP THE ASPIDISTRA FLYING (which was the most moving) and A CLERGYMAN’S DAUGHTER, both of which show the influence of Somerset Maugham. COMING UP FOR AIR I found a piece of bittersweet nostalgia. BURMESE DAYS was just bitter. So where does ANIMAL FARM fit in? It was Orwell’s last work of fiction and I would call it a heavy-handed allegory. This does not mean that I was not entertained by it. But I was always aware that he was preaching. In this case, he was preaching to the choir. I agree with him all down the line. Of course I see the parallels to our current society; that’s pretty transparent.
I also think this book has been more influential on modern literature than is generally acknowledged. There are many striking parallels to William Golding’s LORD OF THE FLIES. I don’t think it’s coincidental that Golding’s “Piggy” is a close cousin to Orwell’s “Snowball.”
This perhaps is an exaggeration, but it seems to me that by the 21st Century, (as a companion piece to 1984) this book had become one of the key texts of a Western education. It is constantly referenced. It’s a must-read. It’s also very brief
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2025I enjoyed this book because of what it stands for. Orwell did a wonderful job explaining his point with this book. It evoked a lot of sadness and anger in me. I don’t think I would ever pick this up again as a pleasure read, but more so to be reminded of where our world began and ends and the cycle that continues.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025This was an interesting read that I did not have the pleasure of reading all in school. I was told by a friend that this story is about communist Russia, and was asked if I thought there would always be a leader. like this story I strongly believe there would always be a leader. For someone is simply a character trait to be a follower and nothing more. It is not in their nature to challenge the status quo or leadership. It is stories like this why I simply don’t blindly follow and question change even at work. I would recommend the story as a quick read to others.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025I have probably read this book 20 times in my 38 years of living and it never gets old. As an old political science major, this book could have sufficed for 4 years of instruction. Power and control will always corrupt no matter if it’s left, right, man, or pig. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in politics and “rebelling” against “Manor Farm”.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024George Orwell's satirical story remains as relevant as ever, painting a clear picture as to how human nature tends toward greed and the accumulation of power despite the best of intentions. Communism only works in theory, never in practice for very long. Just as the founders of the American Republic believed, Freedom only works for a moral people. When a nation loses its morality, a new class of dictators rises, and in communism this is all the more dangerous because it is under the guise of so-called equality which is almost impossible to revolt against even if a revolt is necessary.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2024This is a quick read but a classic with a good story with important values to tell. Definitely recommended to read.
