Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries Paperback – September 16, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
As the practice of democracy becomes a lost art, Americans are increasingly desperate for a restored nation. Many have a general sense that the “system” is in disorder—if not on the road to functional collapse. But though it is easy to identify our political problems, the solutions are not always as clear. In Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries, bestselling author Naomi Wolf illustrates the breathtaking changes that can take place when ordinary citizens engage in the democratic system the way the founders intended and tells how to use that system, right now, to change your life, your community, and ultimately, the nation.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2024We all think democracy is an easy thing, that it just perpetuates by itself. But as Naomi Wolf found out by going back to the writings of the Founders, and the Declaration of Independence itself, maintaining democracy requires active and informed participation by the citizens.
The less citizens have been involved, the less they pay attention, the more of their rights and livelihoods have been stripped away. Not only that, as Wolf found, the politicians, in true elitist fashion, have made it difficult for the average man and woman to run for office, to protest, and to know what their "leaders" are up to.
Even though this was written in 2008 and much could be added and updated, her fears of things getting worse have come true (as she writes in her newer books, Facing the Beast, and The Bodies of Others). One of the few things she gets wrong is when she writes (p. 62) IDs for voting are "barriers" to some people. This wasn't true in '08, nor is it now. Government laws require IDs for many things, such as driving, getting on flights, opening bank accounts, buying guns, etc. So who are the people who can't get IDs for voting?
Wolf outlines seven core principles for taking control of democracy. Then the last part of the book is a user's guide to everything from protesting to changing laws. Hopefully, Wolf will consider writing an update to this essential book. Left or Right, this is a handbook you need.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2008Ms. Wolf has a knack for being ahead of the crowd and with this book, she maintains her position in the vanguard of American political activists.
This work, coupled with her last book, are an effective call to arms for Americans to act aggressively and effectively as citizens who are frustrated with the past 20-30 years trend in American political life. Citizens in a democracy have the responsibility to act and participate in the civic discourse and Ms. Wolf challenges all of us take this responsibility seriously. This would be a great book for high school and college students as well as adults.
And instead of a mere rehash of the usual liberal complaints, Ms. Wolf nails the real issues on the head and then gives the reader a full menu of options and activities. At their core, her recent works send the message that the clock is ticking on saving the American Experiment and that it is high time that citizens take back their government by action. The time for complaining are over. It is time for civic action, action that works and that has results. And that is what Ms. Wolf lays out effectively in this new book.
She has given us a much-needed practical and down-to-earth read on the situation that faces us as Americans. And Ms. Wolf has provided us with a civics lesson (when was the last time you heard civics being taught in school?) about our responsibility to act. Not our responsibility to complain and grumble, but our responsibility to act.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2009Many "sheeple" may find this book full of conspiracy theories or libertarian style rhetoric but, if you are at all informed about the goings on in America you will be both appalled and captivated by this book ! The nice thing about this books' author is that Ms. Wolf is a LIBERAL !!!! She spells out exactly what is going on and how it has all come to fruition for these authoritarian tyrants who run this country . The book outlines in detail how America has become a police state and how our rights and freedoms have been and are being infringed upon . TERRIFIC READ !!! Kudos to the author , Ms. Wolf I SALUTE YOU !!!
THIS IS A MUST READ !!!!
"Don't blame me , I supported RON PAUL !
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2021Naomi Wolfe challenges us to think about where our society is heading and the effect it is having on our democracy. It is up to each of us to participate actively in our local, state and federal government to make sure we maintain what is best in our democratic system and not to let the few who are out for themselves ruin it for the rest of society.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2010Naomi Wolf does a fantastic job detailing how the typical "American" has forgotten what it really means to be an American and the innate responsibility that comes with being a citizen of this country. She also exposes the how we have let the Gov't take our 1st Amendment rights right in front of us. After a few chapters it is evident that we are in need for serious election reform, voting reform, and the need for citizens to take their country back.
I didn't want to put it down, I finished it in a day and half.
Great read, and if you don't feel like "taking the power back" after this one, you better get your pulse checked.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2014Naomi Wolf is trying to do what every other political activist is trying to do: Route out the cause of Modern America, dismantle what is unnecessary or creates too much drama and problems within our society, and find a solution to the problem of government corruption. My hat's off to Mrs. Wolf as she clearly LOVES her country so much and wants nothing more than to motivate future generations to action and to think differently about our current administration.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2011This book is certainly a companion piece to the excellent 'The End of America'. Where TEOA has the references and detail, Give Me Liberty follows up on those themes and provides guidance on where to take it next, if you are so inclined. The author's style is engaging and there is good material here. I would recommend this as the advanced course of The End Of America. It moves from theory to practice, and is mostly targeted at those predisposed to take action based on what they have read before.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2015A good book for all Americans to read

Yay!!Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 9, 20085.0 out of 5 stars Naomi Wolf for President
All things are to be examined and brought into question, and so they are.
Wolf has a Jefferson purity, that sets her apart, and calls on us to reverse the loss of our civil liberties.
The ever illustrious yet practical, Naomi wants us to participate in Liberty. She addresses how to speak in public, fund raise and gives a step by step guide to taking control, yes, you and I taking back control from the state.
