This fascinating, interactive autobiography presents Chuck Close’s story, his art, and a discussion of the many processes he uses in the studio. The question-and-answer format is based on real kids’ inquiries about Close’s life and work, and his answers to them. Close, who is wheelchair-bound and paints with a brush strapped to his arm, discusses the severe dyslexia and face blindness he has struggled with since childhood, as well as a collapsed spinal artery that left him nearly paralyzed at the age of 48.

About the Author

Françoise Mouly is an artist and designer. Since 1993 she has been the art editor of the New Yorker, and she is the publisher and editorial director of TOON Books. Together with her husband, Art Spiegelman, she edited the groundbreaking comics anthology RAW from 1980 to 1991, as well as Abrams’ TOON Treasury of Classic Children’s Comics (2009). She lives in New York City.

    This is a pretty amazing book. It's got all the basic info you'd want on Chuck Close, plus a bunch of his self portaits. The pages are cut into thirds so you can flip different sections of his face together, it's Preeti neat.     This is a great biography about a very famous and contemporary living artist. And most important it is perfect for younger teens or older preteens. It is well presented with great artwork and with short interesting segments about Closes's amazing life.
