Purchase options and add-ons
The time has come to move the country forward with a clear agenda based on common sense for the common good.
THERE IS A BETTER WAY.
Make no mistake: Congressmen Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, and Kevin McCarthy are proud Republicans. But they believe the party had lost sight of the ideals it believes in, like economic freedom, limited government, the sanctity of life, and putting families first. This isn’t your grandfather’s Republican party. These Young Guns of the House GOP—Cantor (the leader), Ryan (the thinker), and McCarthy (the strategist)—are ready to take their belief in the principles that have made America great and translate it into solutions that will make the future even better, solutions that will create private sector jobs, maximize individual freedom, and establish a better world for our children. This groundbreaking book is a call to action that sets forth a plan for growth, opportunity, and commitment that will propel this country to prosperity once again. Together, the Young Guns are changing the face of the Republican party and giving us a new road map back to the American dream.

About the author

Eric Cantor is a results-oriented leader in Congress who is committed to helping solve problems for America's families. He has developed a broad range of innovative solutions to promote free markets, economic growth, job creation and national security.
Representing Virginia's 7th District, Eric has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2001. In the wake of the 2010 midterm elections, Eric was elected by his colleagues in the House to serve as the Majority Leader for the 112th Congress.
In Congress, Eric has earned a reputation as a strategic thinker and ideas-driven conservative. The Weekly Standard featured him as an emerging leader among an impressive group of "Young Guns of the House GOP." Congressional Quarterly has described him as "the GOP's communicator, rainmaker and consensus builder."
A former small businessman, Eric has emerged as a leading voice on the economy and job creation. His commentary is often featured in publications focusing on a wide range of issues including economic matters, health care and foreign policy. A proponent of a strong national defense, Eric formerly chaired the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare and remains committed to providing our nation's military and intelligence communities with the resources they need to keep the homeland safe.
In Congress, Eric has worked to lower taxes, eliminate excessive regulation, strengthen small businesses, and encourage entrepreneurship. He was the chief sponsor of a 2006 bill to make permanent the slashed individual income tax rates for capital gains and dividends, rewarding entrepreneurs, retirees and investors with the ability to create more opportunity for their families and jobs for our communities. He has long been a key player in health care, fighting for greater choice for families. He authored the Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006, which made it easier for families to save for their health care needs through Health Savings Accounts. The legislation became law in late 2006.
As Minority Whip, Eric assembled a highly effective and energetic Republican whip team that served as the nerve center of the Republican Conference. In early 2009, the whip team coordinated the effort in which no Republicans voted for the nearly $1 trillion stimulus bill.
During the lead-up to the stimulus vote, then-Minority Leader John Boehner tapped Eric to head up the Republican Economic Solutions Group that produced the Republican alternative economic plan which would have created twice the jobs at half the cost of the stimulus bill signed into law. The group continued to develop and produce responsible solutions to a broad range of challenges, offering a window into GOP leadership in the 112th Congress. In December 2009, the group offered President Obama a no-cost jobs plan.
Eric also co-authored the New York Times best-selling book, Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders, with Rep. Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Paul Ryan.
Eric is a lifelong resident of the Richmond area, where he got his start in politics as a driver for his predecessor Congressman Tom Bliley. Eric received his undergraduate degree from The George Washington University, his law degree from The College of William and Mary, and his master's degree from Columbia University in New York.
Eric and his wife, Diana, reside in Richmond, Virginia. They have three children: Evan, a recent graduate of The University of Virginia; Jenna, a junior at the University of Michigan; and Michael, in his first year at The University of Virginia.

There are multiple instances throughout the book where all three authors used similar self-critical phrasing: "we lost our way" or "we lost our focus" and "we cared more about getting re-elected than the issues." This auto-critique is both welcome and healthy to the important discussion concerning the problems in Washington. We the people have had enough of the malfeasance and corrupt behavior in DC and it's refreshing to hear these three young men owning up (if at the least acknowledgment)to the misconduct of the political elite-a-crats in Washington.
As you read through 'Young Guns' you will see that Cantor, Ryan and McCarthy make several statements like: "To earn back the voters' trust we would have to do more than just oppose the policies of the Democratic majority. We had to offer creative and effective solutions of our own." With one example being Ryan's "Roadmap For America" they have done just that.
It is refreshing that the party in shambles a couple of short years ago has appeared to (at least attempted) to own up to it's bad behavior and shear stupidity that helped get them into the minority. Afterall, wisdom comes from experience. Experience comes from mistakes. And mistakes come from bad judgement. These three young Republican leaders display to this reader that they have learned from their experience. Their humble expressions and reflections in this book prove that they have learned some great lessons these past few tumultuous years. It is in my opinion these 'Young Guns' be given a chance. If their actions prove to be fraudulent like those of Obama, Pelosi and Reid, then we the people will again rise up and take action. However, I don't think this 'action' will be called for. That is... if these three young men demonsrate that they are men of good sense like that which is expressed in this book. It is my conclusion that they certainly have the capacity to do just that. Read the book.
The authors' solution to near everything is privatization. Regarding Social Security, they totally ignore the fact that most workers will never save on their own enough to retire and will need a strong public pension (Social Security) system. They totally ignore that most workers do not make enough disposable income to set aside $16,500 per year in their 401k plan.
The authors regard the federal goverment as an alien entity overlaying and sucking the life blood out of the American people, rather than as a ruling body elected by and for the benefit of us all, which needs fixing but not eliminating.
At best this book is a read to get an insight into the simplistic view of American society held by the right wing conservatives and the tea party crowd.

The book is in fact, well written, short, punchy, quick to read, and it exposes the ideas of this new brand of Republican leadership: young, committed, charismatic and devoted to the principles of economic freedom, limited government and the protection of family values. The three constitute the perfect team: as described by Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard, who first `discovered' them and introduced to the public at large in early 2007, one is the leader, Eric Cantor, one is the thinker, Paul Ryan, and one is the strategist, Kevin McCarthy. Of the three Cantor has been so far the most prominent one, being the Republican Whip in the House of Representatives, but this year has seen the rise of Paul Ryan and his agenda to reduce the long term indebtedness of America and solve the entitlement crisis.
Cantor's section of the book is the most comprehensive of the three: it is wide-ranging and touches on most aspects of policy, including foreign policy - though very briefly. If there is in fact one criticism to be levelled at the Young Guns movement is that so far the focus has been primarily on domestic issues, but who can blame them? Without a strong economy and healthy society, leadership abroad is difficult to maintain. However, it is Paul Ryan's chapter that presents the most interesting and original ideas of the book. It goes deeper into the numbers, it faces the most critical issues and comes back with a proposed solution. If Cantor's piece is almost a presentation of `who I am' and `why I could be president in the future' (and his is indeed a strong case), Ryan's is more a `what is to be done' piece. McCarthy on the other hand closes the argument with a description of the Young Guns movement and a `what's next' list.
Overall, this book is interesting not only for what it says but because it opens a window on the thinking of a future presidential candidate, if not possible President, of the United States.
