Purchase options and add-ons

In 2011, Susan G. Komen for the Cure was growing weary of the “pink” being tarnished by its health grants to Planned Parenthood (PPH), whose many controversies were fueling backlash against Komen. They wanted to remove themselves from the pro-life/abortion debate and made what they thought was a rational, reasonable decision: seek neutral ground in the culture war by severing ties with Planned Parenthood—and in turn, eliminate a major headache while opening a new, robust fund-raising channel.

Karen Handel, the organization’s Senior Vice President of Public Policy, was tasked with identifying options to disengage. In November, the Komen management and board decided to move forward. Komen believed that they and PPH had made a “gentle ladies” pact, agreeing to part ways amicably and acknowledging that a media firestorm was in no one’s best interest. Yet, six weeks later, PPH unleashed a media campaign so viral and so seamlessly executed that it must have been in the works for some time. PPH attacked Komen against the backdrop of the Obama administration’s clash with the Catholic Church over contraception. After just three days, following hysterical cries that “Komen was abandoning women,” Komen capitulated and reversed course. Handel—a lifelong pro-life Republican who was raised Catholic—was immediately made the target. She resigned within days of Komen’s reversal. Liberals called her a right-wing Trojan horse. The pro-life community hailed her as a hero. She insists she is neither.

Why did Planned Parenthood attack? Was Komen simply a pawn in something bigger? In this book, Karen Handel finally speaks.

***

For at least a decade, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, had been dealing with the backlash from pro-life conservatives because of its grants to Planned Parenthood, the world’s largest abortion provider. According to Karen Handel, Komen’s Senior Vice President of Public Policy in 2011, the two organizations had mutually agreed to part ways amicably, but then Planned Parenthood surprisingly unleashed a media attack against Komen, waving the banner of women’s health as a shield for its underlying political agenda. Public criticism against Komen intensified with damaging consequences, eventually concluding in Komen’s surrender and Karen’s resignation.

In daring to walk away, Komen had unwittingly ignited a battle in which it became collateral damage in a larger election-year war between liberals and conservatives for the souls (and votes!) of women and the nation’s conscience—with abortion and contraception linked as ultimate wedge issues.

What exactly went on inside this firestorm of controversy? Were there larger forces at play? In this tell-all, highly charged account, Karen Handel breaks the silence and finally reveals what really happened in the winter of 2011.

It isn't John Steinbeck, James Michener or even Danielle Steele. It is plodding, undramatic and plainly written. It is a simple story about a woman who worked her way through school and built her credentials and reputation over the years only to see herself used as a punching bag, a scapegoat, a target of calumny. She is a nice person who it seems could be like so many other nice ladies I have worked for and with over the years. She found herself in the midst of a political maelstrom, hung out to dry. That's okay. She kept notes. She knew her stuff, she did her homework.

The eye-opener is that Planned Parenthood is truly a bully and was allowed to run roughshod over the Komen people - the Komen leadership stood down, they yielded. It wasn't so much that Komen was going to not make any more grants to Planned Parenthood of the type they had been making - that amount of less than $700,000 at that time was a teeny drop in the bucket of Planned Parenthood's billion dollar budget. All Komen wanted to do was have grants out there that could do the most good and that they would be able to measure those benefits. Metrics. It's like how people do business in the real world - you need to put your money where it will do the most good - and as well in the "non-profit" world, you need to be able to show your supporters that their donations are having a real effect.

Both Ari Fleischer and Karl Rove appear in the story and they pretty much - in my humble opinion - were their usual selves and for the life of me, I can't understand why they are called upon to "consult".

I liked this book mainly because Mrs. Handel stood up for herself, did not let herself be rolled over by a machine that is very powerful and destructive of all who challenge it.

I ordered this book out of curiosity after seeing the big deal made of this Planned Parenthood vs. Komen in the media earlier this year. I read the book in one day, it really keeps you engaged and wondering what is going to happen next as the story unfolds.

My biggest takeaway from this book is how silly Planned Parenthood acts and cries foul when anyone disagrees with them, all in the name of women's health. It's hard to believe that they get so much money from the government but turn around and use that money as a political organization.

From one woman to another, hats-off to the admirable Karen Handel!

Karen Handel retells the PPH and Komen funding battle from her experience. I thought she did a fantastic job of telling her side of the story. I know that there are always two sides to a story but Handel's details and explainations were very telling for me. I was completely ignorant of how heaviliy involved in politics (and not so much in women's health) PPH is. It was an eye-opening read and I would highly recommend it. No matter what side of the abortion debate you are on, it is horrifying to me that PPH is heavily funded by the government and tax-payer dollars and then turns around using their political arms to financially back Democrats to secure more government funding...this seems so wrong to me on so many levels and I am completely appalled that this can happen. Komen had sound reasons for revising their granting structure and as a non-profit of something so UNPOLITICAL as breast cancer there shouldn't be any political entity pressuring them or "bullying" them. Way to go Karen for having the courage to tell the truth and to move forward to expose PPH for the bully's they are...I hope you see it through!

Being a Susan G Koman 60 mile walker for the past 6 years, I was so pleased to read this book and hear the real truth about the Planned Parenthood mess from earlier this year. It is difficult to raise funds for the walk to begin with. The negative press (created by PP) didn't help matters for my 2012 walk. After reading this book, I can give educated answers when potential sponsors ask about this controversy. Thank you to Karen Handel for being brave enough to tell the truth!!! It really opened my eyes to the inner workings of Planned Parenthood.

An interesting and eye-opening account of the political impact of Planned Parenthood and the lengths they will go to ensure their government dollars (yours and mine) continue to flow to them. They represent themselves as a provider of women’s health but they are really a political arm of the Democratic Party. Each Democrat must agree in the unlimited abortion agenda of PP or you are not welcome in the Democratic Party. Susan G. Komen, an organization truly committed to women’s health failed ALL women when it capitulated to the tactics of destruction by Planned Parenthood when Komen tried to change their Grant making policies and PP objected.

If anything, Karen Handel must be applauded for speaking out against a vicious attack by both Planned Parenthood and the Media. While HuffPo and Planned Parenthood prefer to use anonymous sources to level their attacks, Karen uses her own name to set the record straight.

What you will read is a fascinating story with truly explosive details. It becomes more and more apparent that Planned Parenthood is a political organization funded by the taxpayers. The coordination and bullying of the Left is very discouraging and this book makes the case that they must be stopped.

I recommend reading the book to find out the truth behind this media firestorm, you won't believe how vicious the Left (and their strange leader, Debbie Wasserman Shultz) acted against a private, well-respected breast cancer foundation. Komen was left to die all because Planned Parenthood saw the opportunity to drum up dollars and support for their questionable services.
