Ok when it arrived today and I opened the box and found the book was wrapped in a walmart bag, I was a little nervous. However it looks like many of the books I own and has some wear on the dust cover and spine. Overall an excellent purchase, I have been looking for this edition since my kids brought it home from the school library. One in this excellent condition is a great find and since 200000 leagues under the sea was the first serious book I read, it has a special place in my heart.

Jules Verne was a genius well ahead of his time. In this classic book he takes the reader through the unexplored depths of the ocean on a fantastic and breathtaking voyage fraught with excitement and danger.

I have read several reviews of this book from a variety of sources. The biggest criticism that is offered by the reviewers is that throughout the book Verne, through the words of Professor Annorax, lists and describes a multitude of sea life, both flora and fauna. Many reviewers find this distracting and boring. My personal opinion is that the reason that many readers and reviewers criticize this is because they are comparing the book to the very poor Disney film interpretation and adaptation of the book.

In truth, the book would suffer greatly without the detailed description of the flora and fauna observed by Professor Annorax. Why? I believe that many of the readers and reviewers misunderstand Verne's intention of who Professor Annorax is. Professor Annorax is a world renown naturalist and specialist in sea life. That is exactly what makes this story so wonderful. Verne takes the worlds foremost expert on sea flora and fauna and throws him into a world previously unknown to him. By observing the many life forms never before documented Annorax realizes just how much he does not know and becomes an even greater expert than before. The documentation of the many species is the natural response an expert naturalist would have to the sudden discovery of a whole new world of flora and fauna.

Clearly, Verne had a vivid imagination by describing a functioning submarine well before the concept of a submarine had ever been dreamt of. The detailed explanations of how the submarine works and how it is able to produce electricity and power from nothing more than sea water is perhaps the best kind of science fiction, the kind that has a basis in fact. I have to believe that when the first submarines were being built that the inventors had to have made a serious study of Verne's Nautilus. To have come up with such an intricate, detailed, and scientifically sound description of a submarine in his time is absolutely astounding.

Finally, the accuracy of the never before seen flora and fauna when coupled with the scientifically accurate description of the design and functioning of the Nautilus has to make one wonder if Captain Nemo and the Nautilus are really science fiction or if by some miracle they did actually exist and instead of fiction this story was a summary of a real experience Verne, as Professor Annorax, actually experienced.

I was immediately gripped by this well illustrated tale. As I have gotten older it has been increasingly difficult to find engaging comic book art and stories. This is one of the best I have read recently. The art work is reminiscent of Franklin Booth. I suspect it is pen and ink on scratchboard and the artist has gone in afterward and scratched out some of the line work which gives the work a moody, old-world feel. There are several full page illustrations and they are beautifully rendered. Overall the book has a nice steam punk vibe, befitting since Jules Verne was practically the inventor of the genre (although I have heard that this author is the actual source: Frank Reade: Adventures in the Age of Invention). One favorite panel about 1/4 of the way into the book is of the Nautilus with several cross sections. The pacing of the panels is nice, retaining a traditional feel, but with a lot more diversity than the classic six panels per page. Gianni has done an excellent job staging and pacing the action.

My only criticism is that the story ends rather abruptly, but that is the mostly the fault of Verne. But it did occur to me that maybe the action could have been stretched a bit. The color is adequate. I might have preferred to have seen more warm and cool color contrasts, which could have been included and still preserved the vintage look. But the color certainly doesn't detract from the story.

In addition to the main story there is a four page introduction by Ray Bradbury that is obviously recycled from another edition. I would have preferred an intro by the artist or even the colorists as Bradbury's writing doesn't add much to this edition. At the end of the book is an eight page story by H. G. Wells that is illustrated in chapter book format. The nine illustrations are well done but I haven't read the text as yet (the design reminds me of the illustrated version of Sherlock Holmes).

In short this volume is a great entertainment value that I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality, but not the greatest for sitting down and reading
Reviewed in Canada on April 2, 2023
The book is nicely printed with what feels like good paper, and I like the texture of the cover. However, it is very large and very thin, which for me makes it somewhat uncomfortable to read sitting down in bed.

That said, it would be fantastic if you were studying and taking notes on the book - the pages of a lot more extra room than normal, and the text is quite large, making it easier to find were you were when taking notes.

Would recommend for people looking to take notes/study and to those who prefer larger font sizes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 28, 2024
This story is one of the classics and for those ready for the journey one that is certainly worth a read.
A word of warning to those thinking that is resembles a Walt Disney film, the book is far more of a biologist saga rather than an outright adventure although it is that too.
Very prophetic in so many technical ways even when compared with to today.
Most people know that basic story and it is of course a great one.
