This book established Madison Grant as an authority in racial thought. Its success laid the groundwork for the emerging science of eugenics, and was widely read by Us presidents, scientists and became a popular best-seller in its day. It was a call to American whites to counter the dangers both from non-white and non-North Western European immigration. Unashamedly Nordicist in outlook, Grant used history and anthropology to argue against an open-door immigration policy, which, he said, would lead to the destruction of the founding American population. "We Americans must realize that the altruistic ideals which have controlled our social development during the past century . . . are sweeping the nation toward a racial abyss. If the Melting Pot is allowed to boil without control, the type of native American of Colonial descent will become as extinct as the Athenian of the age of Pericles, and the Viking of the days of Rollo." This hand-edited reproduction contains the complete original text, tables and maps.

Grant was one of the more serious writers on Race during the first quarter of the 20th century, though his conclusions would appear mostly racist to a modern audience. Still, he is still relative to the "Alt-Right" for his emphasis on the "White Race". This edition has the benefit of having the original maps printed in color. I don't believe the other reprints do this.

Madison Grant lived at a time when many Southern and Eastern Europeans were arriving in America. In Grant's maturity, this wave of immigration's problems were apparent to all. In fact, it was much like the situation today.

So, Madison Grant, an upper class American progressive wrote this book.

Grant combines his concern for wildlife preservation and the anthropological theories of William Z. Ripley to argue that the people of Northern and Western Europe, the "Nordics" were under threat from immigration of "Alpines" and "Mediterraneans."

He also wrote this book at a time when the bravest "Nordics" in Germany, Britain, and elsewhere in Europe and America were being destroyed on an industrial scale during the First World War.

Grant argues against the "Indo-European" theory, that the peoples of Europe, Iran, and India shared a common root.

In sum, the book is an adequate defense of the American Nordics but it is somewhat hard to follow. Grant insists that Nordics in Spain caused that Kingdom's rapid rise to world power, and insists that the Nordics eventually died out, causing its fall. This reviewer didn't see any proof that the Conquistadores were Nordics or any other race and wasn't convinced that the Hidalgos of Spain-the "Son's of the Goths" died out. In other cases, Grant tries to explain the migrations of the Northern Barbarians into the collapsing Roman Empire using his racial taxonomy to varying degrees of success.

Since Grant, revolutions have occurred in the study of man and race-especially through DNA testing and technology. It seems today that DNA evidence suggests that the Indo-European theory is more accurate. The "Nordics" that Grant insists conquered India and died out are in fact still around in the "twice born" castes of India.

Nonetheless, Grant's argument is compelling. Northern and Western Europeans, especially the English and the Scots, are who made America.

Despite this reviewers criticism of The Passing of the Great Race, I must give Madison Grant the last word. "Every generation of human beings carries the blood of thousands of ancestors, stretching back through thousands of years, superimposed upon a prehumen inheritance of still greater antiquity and the face and body of every living man offer an intricate mass of hieroglyphs that science will some day learn to read and interpret."

This book is not for everyone. It does bridge the 19th century to the 20th century and the original arguments for supremacy. It was Colonial aristocrats. The arguments influenced immigration in 1924, which plays into current immigration.

The copy I received looks like a copy from a stolen book from Harvard Library dated Jan 20, 1988 with all maps pretty much missing. Why would anyone go through the trouble of printing such a book, whatever one views may be,is puzzling to me . It is a historical book and I may not agree with the author, but to have nasty notes and missing maps ???? To sell such a book on Amazon.com LLC is a big disservice to the Amazon.com community. Even the place for feedback was omitted and I can easily guess why .

I greatly enjoyed reading "The Passing of the Great Race" because it discusses a point that is completely taboo in the 21st Century: most people are not intelligent and this is a matter of genetics rather than education.

Madison Grant's background was in zoology, and he analyzed different groups of humans in Europe as a zoologist might analyze different groups of finches in the Galopagos Islands. He ignored the mainstream concept that everyone is equal, and candidly discussed differences between groups.

I found certain aspects of his arguments to be weak. For example, he refered to forward-thinking people as having "morality" rather than "enlightened self interest."

But, besides that, I greatly enjoyed the book. It reads easily and will keep readers alert with statement after statement that are shockingly un-PC, but often true.

Be aware that this "Filiquarian Publishing" edition was printed in such a way that the maps are unreadable.
