The Assassination Complex: Inside the Government's Secret Drone Warfare Program Hardcover – May 3, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
When the US government discusses drone strikes publicly, it offers assurances that such operations are a more precise alternative to troops on the ground and are authorized only when an “imminent” threat is present and there is “near certainty” that the intended target will be killed. The implicit message on drone strikes from the Obama administration has been trust, but don’t verify.
The online magazine The Intercept exploded this secrecy when it obtained a cache of secret slides that provide a window into the inner workings of the US military’s kill/capture operations in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia. Whether through the use of drones, night raids, or new platforms yet to be employed, these documents show assassination to be central to US counterterrorism policy.
The classified documents reveal that Washington’s fourteen-year targeted killing campaign suffers from an overreliance on flawed signals intelligence, an apparently incalculable civilian toll, and an inability to extract potentially valuable intelligence from terror suspects. This campaign, carried out by two presidents through four presidential terms, has been deliberately obscured from the public and insulated from democratic debate. The Assassination Complex allows us to understand at last the circumstances under which the US government grants itself the right to sentence individuals to death without the established checks and balances of arrest, trial, and appeal.
The book will include original contributions from Glenn Greenwald and Edward Snowden.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2017This was my first time reading work of Jeremy Scahill, and I wish I found him sooner. The book details something not covered much by the media, but is key to understanding another layer of the quagmire that is United States interventionism and "nation building" in the Middle East. Drone strikes are a tool while targeted killing is the policy. The tone of how the evidence is presented in this book isn't so anti-American, rather a call to action for transparency in our highest levels of government. This wouldn't be so much of a story if more than a fraction of Americans knew full extent the protocol and controversy surrounding our drone program. A great read that stimulates what our "War on Terror" has evolved into.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2017The first thing that can be said about this book is that just because documents are marked as classified doe not mean that their content is any way true or valuable. Marking documents as such may reflect motivations that may be political or are the subject of institutional pressures that have as their goal deception or manipulation of a particular subject matter. The authors of this book unfortunately depend too much on the assumption that the classified documents they use to justify their analysis and conclusions regarding the Obama “drone war” are true and reliable. The knowledge to be gained from the use of the documents requires an independent check, and this may be very difficult to obtain. A very time-consuming effort may be needed to do this, and such long time scales might be beyond the threshold of tolerance not only for most journalists or historians, but also the skeptical reader who demands in-depth evidence for any hypotheses or claims about the drone wars.
That is not to say that the authors depend solely on classified documents to support the thesis. Indeed a lot of real groundwork was done, as is readily apparent from their descriptions of the areas of the world that they cover. In that regard the authors not only in their reporting behind this book but in past projects have shown an incredible amount of intestinal fortitude, far beyond any journalist alive at the present time. A dozen more like them and the profession of journalism would be significantly advanced. These individuals are out there in the trenches, collecting information that has infinitely more value than the chair-warmers that display themselves on nightly television. It is indeed ironic that true journalism these days requires taking extreme risks, with the level of risks almost being equal to those taken by military soldiers.
As can be garnered by a study of this book, and somewhat alarmingly, the value doctrine of “reasonable suspicion” is used to describe the policies that the U.S. government uses to identify individuals for targeting killing and to justify the drone wars. In addition to that, the definition of ‘terrorism’ is pointed out to have become so broad that mere objectionable speech patterns are viewed as acts of terrorism. A natural question for readers to ask is to how to find out if they are on the terrorist watch list and thus potential targets for elimination. If a reader agrees with the content of this book for example and proclaims such publicly, will this be viewed as “subversive” by the U.S. government and result in inclusion in the terrorist watch list? If the contents of this book are mostly true, the answer is that this will probably be the case.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2016There is no one like Scahill to connect the dots; to do research and interview folks who have not otherwise spoken. He assembles narratives that either flesh out the official story or counter it. Scahill is very bright, thorough, provocative, and a rock solid journalist who learned from the likes of Amy Goodman on WBAI. This book is not as long or as substantive Blackwater, but I was happy to read again Scahill.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2019Woooow.. just WOW. Sooo much we don’t know about what our government does! So appreciative of this book. Bought all the copies at the bookstore by me that I had to get one on here. Great gift if you want your friends/family to know the truth.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2016For those who have followed the work of Scahill, Greenwald and others through media outlets like Democracy Now, much that is reported in this book will be familiar. Nevertheless it is very helpful to have the entire case laid out clearly with supporting documents in one place. It is crucial reading for all Americans as we continue to wrestle with the legal principles which should govern the technology of modern warfare.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2016It is very unsettling to know that this disregard of constitutional protection is the new normal. Good and evil seem to exist side by side in our government and our society. Revelations in such books and things that come across in social media have put our naive Pollyanna tendencies out of commission. We have lost our communal innocence.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2016Yesterday, July 1 (Friday afternoon before the 4th of July holiday weekend), the U.S. government made its "news dump" regarding our drone program in the Middle East and the related assassinations exposed in this much needed book which was released May 3 (2 months ago). It is shameful that our government still wants to hide the facts from the American people. If there is nothing wrong going on here, why is the government so reluctant to discuss the facts openly? Change we can believe in: President Bush's drone program put on steroids by Obama. Fabulous!

Excellent book on the US military and CIA's use of drones. This book was invaluable to me in one of my Master's exams as I was able to incorporate an exampke Scahill details in this book to highlight the civilian body counts that can be attributed to supposed 'precision' strikes

Barry_LyndonReviewed in France on December 16, 20164.0 out of 5 stars Condensé de la politique US au XXIe siècle
Bear the catReviewed in Canada on June 10, 20165.0 out of 5 stars The new world order..
Along with Glenn Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill is one of our generation's bravest writers, always pushing for the truth amidst the US regime and its thirst for war. Here he tackles warfare in the form of drones and more so, what the public isn't aware of.. It is an engrossing, visceral, and at times a numbing account of drone warfare and just how many people are affected in turn. Mandatory reading for all.
Rupinder SayalReviewed in India on September 10, 20165.0 out of 5 stars A damning account of USA's killing machinery
A shocking (almost a cliche now) expose of the new US policy of executing "suspected" terrorists by drone strikes. This book is actually a compilation of articles published on the website of "The Intercept", a news organization co-founded by the author, as well as some new material.
BTW, Jeremy Scahill's last book "Dirty Wars" won many prestigious awards, and was made into a documentary which was nominated for an Academy Award, in case you were wondering about his credentials.
I think fairly everyone knows that US has used drones or UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for killing suspected operatives of various terrorist outfits, but this book really goes deep into the devilish details. Some of the aspects highlighted are: legal issues, human rights, civil liberties, international relations, and last but not the least, the technology and its fallibility.
It is ironic that this book reads like one of Hollywood's terrorism-themed thrillers, except that it is all factual, and amply supported by leaked materials, FOIA-requested documents and news reports from many independent news outlets and civil rights/transparency organizations.
Summing up, this is a really important book about so many current issues at stake. Prepare yourself to be blown away by facts which will make you question your political affiliations and news sources.
This book definitely deserves a much, much wider readership.
