"One part science book, one part historical narrative, one part memoir . . . harrowing and inspiring.”—The Wall Street Journal
How a determined scientist cracked the case of the first successful—and disastrous—submarine attack
On the night of February 17, 1864, the tiny Confederate submarine HL Hunley made its way toward the USS Housatonic just outside Charleston harbor. Within a matter of hours, the Union ship’s stern was blown open in a spray of wood planks. The explosion sank the ship, killing many of its crew. And the submarine, the first ever to be successful in combat, disappeared without a trace.
For 131 years the eight-man crew of the HL Hunley lay in their watery graves, undiscovered. When finally raised, the narrow metal vessel revealed a puzzling sight. There was no indication the blast had breached the hull, and all eight men were still seated at their stations—frozen in time after more than a century. Why did it sink? Why did the men die? Archaeologists and conservationists have been studying the boat and the remains for years, and now one woman has the answers.
In the Waves is much more than just a military perspective or a technical account. It’s also the story of Rachel Lance’s single-minded obsession spanning three years, the story of the extreme highs and lows in her quest to find all the puzzle pieces of the Hunley. Balancing a gripping historical tale and original research with a personal story of professional and private obstacles, In the Waves is an enthralling look at a unique part of the Civil War and the lengths one scientist will go to uncover its secrets.

Why, The Answer, of course!
Lance is a biomedical engineer and an expert in blast injuries. She developed a theory on what likely caused the H. L. Hunley’s eight men to lose their lives, then began the extensive experiments needed to prove it – and to earn a PhD at a top university along the way. This book follows Lance’s progress, weaving in pertinent information about the ill-starred H. L. Hunley and her place in the timeline of the Civil War.
There is plenty of deep math and science here – but Lance has a remarkable ability to explain this to laymen such as myself and present a compelling case for her work. And she does so with an engaging writing style that is familiar, conversational and occasionally humorous.
If you are interested in the history of the Civil War and/or submarines, you need this book! Or, if you are a scientific type who wants to write to a wider audience, read “In the Waves” to see how it’s done. Nice work, Dr. Lance!
One wonders how a general audience, who may never have heard of the Hunley or even been aware that there was a controversy about the fate of the crew found within the wreck, would be enticed to pick up this title. In my case, it was from hearing the author interviewed on NPR about a subsequent book. Her articulate, charmingly nerdy enthusiasm was captivating enough to prompt me to discover and purchase this book. Unfortunately, her charm on the radio was somehow not quite captured on the page. Any curiosity you may have about this fascinating yet morbid subject will be thoroughly satisfied, if not drowned, in the details, which can tend to the self-absorbed. She even names an invented unit of pressure after herself! As other reviewers point out, it is as much a glimpse into the arcane rabbit-hole-digging of academia as it is about an actual historical event. It still emerges as a combination of scientific memoir and history that may float your boat.
She is an absolutely wonderful science writer. Her descriptions of how shock waves behave, for example, are perfectly understandable and compelling. Further, she provides a vivid picture of how science "works"--from sophisticated computer modeling of explosions to mucking around in the mud of a farm pond.
Her presentation of the history of the Hunley is similarly strong, without rehashing others' research. And then there are the wonderful vignettes about how research really gets done, such as offering home-cooked fried chicken to induce colleagues to help set up an experiment.
Read this book if you are interested in Civil War history, the scientific process, or just like good writing by someone who is passionate about her subject.

When the sub was finally located and brought up to the surface, another mystery was created. Why were the crew sitting at their stations and not trying to get out?
Thanks to extensive research, the use of modern equipment and frequently getting very wet and dirty, scientist Rachel Lance has finally solved the mystery.
