"One part science book, one part historical narrative, one part memoir . . . harrowing and inspiring.”
The Wall Street Journal

How a determined scientist cracked the case of the first successful—and disastrous—submarine attack

On the night of February 17, 1864, the tiny Confederate submarine
HL Hunley made its way toward the USS Housatonic just outside Charleston harbor. Within a matter of hours, the Union ship’s stern was blown open in a spray of wood planks. The explosion sank the ship, killing many of its crew. And the submarine, the first ever to be successful in combat, disappeared without a trace.

For 131 years the eight-man crew of the
HL Hunley lay in their watery graves, undiscovered. When finally raised, the narrow metal vessel revealed a puzzling sight. There was no indication the blast had breached the hull, and all eight men were still seated at their stations—frozen in time after more than a century. Why did it sink? Why did the men die? Archaeologists and conservationists have been studying the boat and the remains for years, and now one woman has the answers.

In the Waves is much more than just a military perspective or a technical account. It’s also the story of Rachel Lance’s single-minded obsession spanning three years, the story of the extreme highs and lows in her quest to find all the puzzle pieces of the Hunley. Balancing a gripping historical tale and original research with a personal story of professional and private obstacles, In the Waves is an enthralling look at a unique part of the Civil War and the lengths one scientist will go to uncover its secrets.

Library Journal (starred review)

“Ever since the Confederate submarine
HL Hunley was brought up from the ocean floor in 2000, with the skeletons of its eight crewmen still at their posts inside the intact hull, conservationists and historians have speculated about their fate. Were they drowned by water pouring in from damage by the torpedo explosion that sank their target, the USS Housatonic? Were they asphyxiated by lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide poisoning? Or did they die from some other cause? In this enthralling account based on extensive research and testing, the US Navy blast-injury specialist Rachel Lance solves the mystery in convincing fashion and offers an important contribution to Civil War literature.”
James M. McPherson, Princeton University, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era

“They were the first crew of a submarine to sink an enemy ship, but did they ever have a hope of coming home? To find out, Rachel Lance brings together an unlikely mix of old-style weaponry, modern science, and people who love to make things go bang. This is her determined search to uncover the truth about an impossible mission. It is a great read!"
—Sherry Sontag, co-author of Blind Man's Bluff

“Rachel Lance’s In The Waves is a captivating magic trick of a book: part detective story, part scientific mystery, and part personal essay on the challenges—and triumphs of—researching stubborn history. Lance weaves these threads with astonishing aplomb, and the devastating denouement will haunt you long after you’ve turned the final page.”
—Karen Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of The Ghosts of Eden Park

“[Lance] has a firm command of both the scientific and historical subject matter and writes with flair. Her richly detailed account appears to definitively solve this Civil War–era mystery.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Anyone who enjoys reading outstanding narrative nonfiction will absolutely love Rachel Lance’s In the Waves. Reading it is like watching Sherlock Holmes investigate a murder mystery—if 'Sherlock' were an exquisite writer, a woman, and had to solve the mystery while battling petty academic jealousies. Lance unravels the science and medical hypotheses with engaging observations, venturing from Kurt Vonnegut and the allied bombing of Dresden to Senator Strom Thurmond. And this storytelling 'Sherlock' also packs a genuine sense of humor.”
—Gary Kinder, author of Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea

In the Waves—a perfect title for Rachel Lance’s captivating tale documenting her obsession with solving the Civil War mystery about a tiny Confederate submarine that successfully blasted apart a Union ship in the Charleston harbor and then disappeared without a trace for 131 years. With determination and a knack for storytelling, Dr. Lance re-creates the daring mission of the HL Hunley and her demise, using precision-based bio-medical expertise to solve the mystery of how her eight-man crew died.”
—Ann Blackman, author of Wild Rose, Civil War Spy

“When we brought the
Hunley up in 2000, we were shattered with exhaustion and had put everything we had into prying the Hunley from the mud of Charleston harbor, but the recovery team assumed that the scientists and researchers who came after us would bring the same passion to the science and the story of Hunley as we had. We were not wrong. Dr. Lance brings a razor-sharp mind and an equally sharp wit to the greatest remaining mystery of the Civil War—how and why did Hunley sink? [Lance's] rigorous and highly accessible science, leavened with more than a few lovingly described characters and wry observations of graduate student life makes In the Waves a compelling explanation and a rollicking good read!”
—David L. Conlin, PhD, Hunley recovery team field director, chief archaeologist, National Park Service

“Lively . . . An entertaining account of research that solved a historical mystery.”
Kirkus Reviews

"This solid, engaging mystery recounts Lance’s quest to solve the mystery of the crew of the Confederate submersible Hunley . . . in a lively, entertaining, novelistic style that carries the reader along with all the verve of an Agatha Christie whodunit."
Booklist

“Important, timely, and deeply entertaining . . . In the Waves is many things, all of them entertaining to read: a scientific documentary woven with thriller-novel intrigue, a serious history accented with gentle snark, and a rapidly paced recounting of the dogged pursuit of scientific truth and a PhD. But In the Waves is also an accessible and important exploration of the injury deeply affecting the current generation of America’s service members.”

Civil War Submarine Hunley Mystery Solved
If you are reading my book review to learn the answer to the mystery of the Civil War Submarine Hunley you will be disappointed. Rachel Lance has put great time and effort into researching all aspects and details of the final moments of the Hunley. Her book is a treasure trove of technical knowledge for techno nerds but the average reader like me can ignore the numbers and go with the flow of solving the mystery.Rachel Lance has a background as a biomedical engineer and blast-injury specialist. She worked for the U.S. Navy specializing in underwater equipment. A program allowed her to go to Duke University to pursue a Doctorate Degree. Her natural inquisitive nature and the continued mystery of the Hunley came together to be the basis of her study.Several issues remained unsolved. The Hunley had been discovered years ago and a claim made with the Federal Government. However, it was not pursued. Many years later Clive Cussler and his organization, NUMA, relocated the Hunley. Arrangements were made to raise the submarine. A Friends of the Hunley group was formed to be the public face of the “Hunley Project”. They worked with many organizations to research and care for the vessel. The Hunley had attached a torpedo to a long pole on the front and rammed it into the Union ship Housatonic sinking her. The Hunley was never heard from until raised many years later. The amazing facts were that there was no apparent damage. One minor hole was found. The inside had completely filled with silt apparently from the hole. The crew were found sitting at their stations as if nothing had happened and everything was normal. Yet, the submarine sank and they did nothing to escape and apparently sat calmly at their stations. How could that be? Why? The mystery!Rachel Lance with much personal hardship and perseverance unravels the mystery. She proves beyond a doubt how the crew perished that fateful night. This after they became the first submarine to successfully sink another ship. She does state as an engineer the door always stays open for additional investigation. What is amazing is how many additional people gave willingly of their personal time to assist in the project while the Friends of the Hunley showed no interest. Scuba divers, investigators, naturally inquisitive, engineers, underwater engineers, historians and finally any Civil War buff will find “In The Waves” a most interesting read!Recommended Five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ StarThank you for looking at my review. I read a Smithsonian article about this book and was impressed by the thorough detailed forensic study of every detail of the Hunley's demise and was hungry for more. I immediately bought the book. With all her research into the detailed structure of of the submarine, I hoped that there would be detailed drawings of the workings of the ship, but there are none. I easily found that technical information and drawings about the Hunley are easily available elsewhere. Regardless, Rachael Lance brings these details to light as her unique biomedical engineering and blast injury specialist expertise are brought to bear and helps us understand how the Hunley's designer forged into territory beyond the limitations of the scientific understanding of the day, and how the crew paid the ultimate price for that. The book covers an amazing scope of the early history of submarines and the use of black powder during the Civil War and personal details of the crews of the Hunley and the Union ship it sank and far more information and detail than that. It was very savory and satisfying for one who loves to delve into all the side-tracking rabbit holes she encountered on her journey. While some have felt that the narrative of the book meanders off course too much, I was consumed by the richness and depth of Ms. Lance's work, and I found parallels with the career path I've traveled and felt a sense of camaraderie with her struggles. This is a magnificent and compelling work.

If you’re reading this, you probably already know a bit about the H. L. Hunley and her attendant mysteries. So! What does Rachel Lance’s “In the Waves: My Quest to Solve the Mystery of a Civil War Submarine” bring to the table?

Why, The Answer, of course!

Lance is a biomedical engineer and an expert in blast injuries. She developed a theory on what likely caused the H. L. Hunley’s eight men to lose their lives, then began the extensive experiments needed to prove it – and to earn a PhD at a top university along the way. This book follows Lance’s progress, weaving in pertinent information about the ill-starred H. L. Hunley and her place in the timeline of the Civil War.

There is plenty of deep math and science here – but Lance has a remarkable ability to explain this to laymen such as myself and present a compelling case for her work. And she does so with an engaging writing style that is familiar, conversational and occasionally humorous.

If you are interested in the history of the Civil War and/or submarines, you need this book! Or, if you are a scientific type who wants to write to a wider audience, read “In the Waves” to see how it’s done. Nice work, Dr. Lance!

You would think the world’s first successful submarine attack during the American Civil War would be an exciting story in itself. But this narrative is even more specific and personal. It is told from the perspective of a graduate student obsessed with researching the exact cause of the demise of this historic vessel and its crew. The Hunley is currently displayed by the citizens of Charleston, South Carolina as a proud relic of the Confederacy, but perhaps not well known to the rest of the world. As a seeming sign of how obliviously “lost in the weeds” the author has gone into the subject, the Hunley is referred to only as “a civil war submarine” in the subtitle.

One wonders how a general audience, who may never have heard of the Hunley or even been aware that there was a controversy about the fate of the crew found within the wreck, would be enticed to pick up this title. In my case, it was from hearing the author interviewed on NPR about a subsequent book. Her articulate, charmingly nerdy enthusiasm was captivating enough to prompt me to discover and purchase this book. Unfortunately, her charm on the radio was somehow not quite captured on the page. Any curiosity you may have about this fascinating yet morbid subject will be thoroughly satisfied, if not drowned, in the details, which can tend to the self-absorbed. She even names an invented unit of pressure after herself! As other reviewers point out, it is as much a glimpse into the arcane rabbit-hole-digging of academia as it is about an actual historical event. It still emerges as a combination of scientific memoir and history that may float your boat.

I don't usually write book reviews on Amazon. The platform seems more appropriate for reviews of step stools and such. However, I am making an exception for Dr. Lance's new book.

She is an absolutely wonderful science writer. Her descriptions of how shock waves behave, for example, are perfectly understandable and compelling. Further, she provides a vivid picture of how science "works"--from sophisticated computer modeling of explosions to mucking around in the mud of a farm pond.

Her presentation of the history of the Hunley is similarly strong, without rehashing others' research. And then there are the wonderful vignettes about how research really gets done, such as offering home-cooked fried chicken to induce colleagues to help set up an experiment.

Read this book if you are interested in Civil War history, the scientific process, or just like good writing by someone who is passionate about her subject.

This book finally explains the fate of the last HL Hunley crew. I was a diesel submariner and I always read what I could find about the very early submarines and what the forerunners had to put up with. This book gave me the true picture of the HL Hunley’s crewmen. Only an engineer that studies blast technology and its effects on humans in and out of the water. Everything else is simply an uneducated guess. Dr. Lance earned her PHD by scientifically finding the answers to what happened when the Hunley “fishboat” actually sunk a warship in 1864 . It is written as best she could to explain to a layperson or even a submariner how this was accomplished . A “must read” for the modern submarine sailor and those interested in the subject.

This is quite simply a superb book. The mystery of why the Hunley sank has fascinated people ever since it happened.
When the sub was finally located and brought up to the surface, another mystery was created. Why were the crew sitting at their stations and not trying to get out?
Thanks to extensive research, the use of modern equipment and frequently getting very wet and dirty, scientist Rachel Lance has finally solved the mystery.
