When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, the United States assisted in training the rebels fighting the Soviets. Little did it know that it was thereby paving the way for future terrorism. Reeve, an investigative journalist and freelance writer, explains how two men who eventually benefited from this military training have terrorized the world during the past decade. He argues that Ramzi Yousef, who masterminded the bombing of the World Trade Center, acted from a mixture of political and religious motives and shows that he was captured only through the hard work (and a little luck) of the FBI and other intelligence agencies around the world. Reeve also provides a better understanding of Osama bin Laden, who funds the terrorism movement (he is from an extremely wealthy family) and was responsible for the double U.S. Embassy bombing in Africa in 1998. Reeve argues that even if bin Laden were captured, someone else will take his place: "It is no longer a question of if terrorists will successfully use a weapon of mass destruction, but when." Amazing Work on New Terrorist- pre 9/11 written

This is truly a haunting work, in that the picture it painted prior to the 9/11 bombing, focused on the first Twin Tower bombing and the subsequent pursuit and capture of its mastermind, Ramzi Yousef.
The author has a wealth of info, primarily he claims from personal interviews of the government agents, etc. It is well developed and well thought out, and presented cogently.
This portrait of the new terrorist predicted what did happen on the taking down of the Twin Towers. It further predicted the focus then on terrorism. The question is: Why didn't they take it so serious back then, become more aggressive?
Me thinks, it's the change in leadership.
The main point he makes is this: "Carlos the Jackab and Abu Nidal were essentially fighting for a place at the table. They wanted recognition for their movement, they wanted recognition for their demands, whereas Osama bin Laden and Ramzi Yousef . . . want to punish and destroy, they're not looking for a place at the table--they want to destroy the table." (pg. 265)
Fascinating look into this complex, perlexing evil upon the world.

Surprisingly Good, Even a Decade Later

This is an informative, detailed history of Ramzi Yousef, the World Trade Center bomber, and of his links to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. It covers the 1993 WTC plot, the attack on a shrine in Mashhad, Iran, the assassination attempts againts Benzir Bhutto, the Bojinka plots, and how the FBI and Pakistani FIA finally caught Yousef. It also discusses the rise and influence of Osama bin Laden, correctly predicting that al-Qaeda represented a major new development in international terrorism. It is written for the casual reader, so it is quite accessible.

The material in this book is dated, so I was not expecting much. But the level of detail about Ramzi Yousef's various plots, and the US efforts to capture and convict him, more than makes up for it. More recent works like "The Cell," Gunaratna's "Inside al-Qaeda," and Wright's excellent "The Looming Tower," all describe Yousef's role the 1993 WTC plot, but not to the same extent as in The New Jackals. The al-Qaeda material is not as impressive; although Reeve was correct about the danger, he spends little time on the attacks in Aden, Dhahran, Nairobi and Dar es-Salaam, and neither the December, 2000 USS Cole attack nor 9/11 and subsequent attacks had happened yet. And although he mentions the Iranian Revolution and the attack on Mecca, he does so very casually, without the kind of analysis into the genesis of modern Islamic terror that later authors use for greater historical context. There is no mention of Sayyid Qutb at all, and Ayman al-Zawahiri barely gets a mention. Ali Muhammad's role in AQ and the African embassy bombings is quickly passed over.

But Simon Reeve is not content with just writing a biography of Ramzi Yousef - a man who is worthy of a monographic biography, but whose name is probably not enough to sell. So this book is also a bit of propaganda, urging westerners to wake up to a sense of the looming danger. That's all well and good, although sometimes the author makes some leaps not justified by the evidence (e.g. claiming bin Laden met with US emissaries (p. 167), claiming the US funded bin Laden (p. 47), and discussing bin Laden's links to Saddam Hussein (p.216)).

Much more obnoxious, in my view, is his apologia for Islam (e.g. p. 125). While I agree with him that not all Muslims can be tarred with the terrorism brush, his overwrought "Islam is a creed of peace and veneration," and equating present Islamic terrorism to past Christian atrocities, are unnecessary and (because hotly contested) detract from the book.

Those issues aside, I recommend this book to readers of any background level. I have a few notes on Reeve's prognostication that I will save for the comments.
