This book needs a major update, and it is a bit over-written, but digs into organizational techniques for family history research. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the author admits right up front that she doesn't use computer programs much. This is why I'd love to see it updated to integrate both paper handling and computer technology as most are doing both.

This was a good book that saw ina library. I ordered a copy and the book was delivered on time and in good condition. The book has several good ideas about organizing genealogical information.

I rated this book 5 stars because it is easy to understand and apply the information it contains. I have enjoyed genealogy for many years and haven't been organized. Now I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel and like the feeling of getting to my information without wasting time looking for it. I think anyone interested in genealogy should have this book handy.

Not only does Ms. Carmack give us where, how, what and why information to keep us going in our searches, she provides us with necessary layed out, blank pages for us to fill out on our own as needed. Also these can be printed as blanks as more are needed. For me, this is a marvelous tool! A workbook to truly enjoy!

I have over 2500 pages on my family history. I thought I was pretty well organized. Ms. Carmack gave me some new ideas on certain ways to organize my genealogy. It's a great book filled with great effective ways to help in keeping your history in a fine filing system.

Sharon DeBartolo Carmack is one of two genealogy authors I look for when I need answers to questions. This resource is written as if you and Sharon and sitting at the kitchen table having a conversation. The book takes the reader step-by-step through the process of researching your family tree.

Good for the money
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 17, 2013Verified Purchase
The book that I purchased was 2nd hand and was an ex-library A4 paperback. For me, it represents good value for the money that I paid for it. As a novice to finding ancestors, I needed guidance on how to address the problem of organising the growing information and documentation that seems to amass every time every time new information is found. The book showed me basic principles which is what I wanted and that is why I have given it 4 stars. The book gave what I wanted and more. The book surprised me as it has a much wider scope than I imagined and is not just about organising a filing system. It is about organising the whole aspect of my genealogy project; things that I had not thought of before ie, how to purge your files of unneeded documents, how to organise and make the most of a research project field trips, finding room in your house for all your genealogy stuff.
I bought it not realising that it was written in 1999 which was a disappointment as the book is 14 years out of date but the principles that it conveys are very sound.

A bit disappointed
Reviewed in France on November 5, 2012Verified Purchase
This book is now pretty well out of date in the advice given, though some of the basic comments on sorting out a family archive still apply. I am disappointed that it isn't of more relevance to me in cataloguing my family archive.
