Well written book. Was required reading for a college course. This was my 6th semester-long family history course on the college level and I still learned things from this book. Highly recommended, thorough book on the US Federal census. I especially enjoyed reading the journal entries of a woman who was a census taker from over 100 years ago. I also enjoyed the chapters on the additional non-population schedules and what you can glean from them.

This is a great handbook for those that do a lot of work with early census records. It explains when the census was taken when it was taken, and the questions asked. Gives examples of each census, starting with the first in 1790.
Nice to be able to just check a book really fast rather than search the US government website.

Although this book was published several years ago, the information in it is timeless. Ms. Hinckley has done a masterful job of identifying unique and little known ways to mine the census for valuable data. Her writing style is straightforward and easy to understand. Using the search strategies that she suggests has helped me find people that I had been looking for a long time; but could not find. Any serious family historian should have this book in his/her genealogy collection.

I'm still reading this book at my leisure. It lists additional government schedules available to researchers in years when certain information wasn't on the census. It is worth reading.
