I'm really picky about genealogy books, and this one is excellent. Most books don't discuss carefully evaluating evidence and really thinking through problems associated with conflicting information, burned counties, brick walls etc. The "thinking" in this book and the examples of alternative sources one may not be familiar with are what is outstanding. In addition, Ms. Rising's examples are clear, easy to follow and informative, and there are many of them. Her research methods are applicable to ANY time period you are working in. I disagree with another reviewer who complained that this book won't help someone with "late" immigrant ancestors.
I'm an experienced genealogist and a trained researcher who has been working for 25 years on my family lines. The land chapter, in particular, and the chapter on working in the years between the Revolutionary War and 1850, gave me several directions to go in knocking down some brick walls.
Beginners as well as experienced researchers will benefit from this book. What will help doing genealogy research most of all is knowing how to evaluate what you have and how to recognize what else you need. This book does much more!
The case studies are very in depth and the examples are explained in detail so that you understand how the end conclusions were determined. I learned the meaning of many legal terms that were used in the past that would be found in old documents. That was very helpful because they are not words that are commonly used today and are interpreted in totally different ways today.
If you are having some trouble finding information on some, or even one of your ancestors, I recommend that you purchase this book. It is a wealth of information and a great resource for those old legal documents that can be so confusing.
Although the book has some good ideas, I learned very little from it. Her methods may work in the examples she gives but not for most of us in the real world. Bottom line is that you would have to do a lot of traveling, stay a very long time in each location just hoping that you would be as lucky as she was in her examples. I wonder how many wild goose chases she made to every one that produced results. Personally I have found that DNA is the absolute best way to tie related families together. Although it does cost over $150 to do a test that will give accurate results, compare that to travel, gas, motel and other expenses and it is a bargain. If you get a positive hit on the DNA then you know if you are on the right track, if not don't waste your time unless there may have been an illegitimate birth in there somewhere and if that is the case you will be lost anyway.
I have been doing family research for almost 30 years so beginners may find some clues in this book that will help but those of us who have been around the block a few times know most of the things she suggest in her book. Also I don't like the example method of telling how to do reseearch. They may apply in that very narrow situation, but not for researchers in general.
After reading the book I put it in my box of books where the "don't waste your time" goes. Once a year I donate these to the library for their book sale. Realize poeple that there is a LOT of free information on the internet to help you in your search for family history. Use your computer, not your pocketbook to learn as much as you can.
