I use it in my own introductory college course on mythology for two reasons. First the amount of primary materials covered allows one to forgo lots of other books being ordered, a consideration for academia at this point in time. Second, the controversal interpretations of ancient society and the meaning of the myths can be balanced by either the teacher of Powell's "Classical Myth" book. I think that for the college level, this exposure to different views is valuable because it challenges students to think. Not useful beyond the introductory level though.

I am disappointed that a reviewer brought down the rating of this magnificent book with a review that is unbelievably off-target. As a Greek mythology instructor in continuing education and writer of books utilizing myth, and as psychotherapist who relates myth to the process of human transformation, I find this book to be one of the most in-depth and meaningful guides to Greek mythology available - out of many dozens that I have read.

The focus is not just upon learning the myths and stories, but penetrating to their deeper meanings. This involves understanding them in the context in which they evolved, and also in a way which speaks to us today.

The questions and commentaries are particularly thought-provoking but above the level of junior high school and most high school students. Basically, this book is college level and beyond - for those who wish to understand not only greek mythology but also its implications and relevance. A reader can easily ignore the questions, and only read some of the chapters to read, and still benefit.

It had all the information I needed and was clean and intact when I received it. A good quality used book.

Rather superficial and rife with infuriatingly inane and dull questions after each chapter. If you plan to use this text with students above the eighth grade level, be prepared to witness the extremes of human boredom.
