This book is a good, detailed, account of the people and events of the time. A bit long and involved, but any historical event like Iran/Contra is complicated. Quite accurate, to the best of my recollection, it's a good good read for anyone interested in history and government and will jog the memories of anyone who lived through that era.

Honest, transparent report of his life and what actually happened as he was thrown under the bus by the system he served as requested. When I tried to purchase books written by Oliver North in Albuquerque, I found only one that was worn and hugely discounted at Barnes and Noble. When I asked about other works by Oliver North, the clerk responded, "He's not very popular around these parts." I seems that North's clear honesty and transparent reporting in this book of his own feelings and actual events is what people don't want to hear. With so many politicians getting elected with promises like "transparency" and what they will do about certain issues, then after getting elected just going about politics as usual - not regarding even a single word of their campaign promises - people don't seem to want to hear the honest reflection in this book on the administration and presidency of one of our apparently favorite presidents of all time. It seems much easier to hide our heads in the sand than face the reality of what our national politicians are like. Read this book and open your eyes to what is happening in our nation at even greater frequency - especially with the current administration, now astonishingly twice elected by gullible, willingly blind lapdogs of his political rhetoric. So, it's no wonder unvarnished truth found in this work and other works by Oliver North are "...not very popular around these parts." Buy this book; read it with an open mind to honest reflection and events as they actually happened.

It strikes me as another iteration of the O.J. Simpson trial. For the most part, these politicos seemingly had their own agendas to fulfill. The idea that a Leaf Colonel could get all this sub-rosa activity going, and keep it secret from his superiors smacks of the usual D.C. fairy tales that we have been forced to swallow since the Teapot Dome Scandal--and possibly before. It underscores what I've always believed: Reagan said: "All right, here's what I want done. I want Ortega gone. I don't care what you do, just do it, and I don't even want to know how you get it done. Just get it done," Oliver North was the worker, and a high profile enough individual that he made a visible target. He paid the price, along with Adm. Poindexter for doing what a gutless Congress should have been doing all along.
He deserves a medal--a special medal called The Congressional Combat Badge."
Ortega was a huge danger in the Central American region. Russia had shipped him loads of the latest MiGs, (into the port of Managra) and he was using Russian-supplied Attack Helicopters to try to wipe out the Miskito Indians on the coast. Also, please realize that even after the thug Danny Ortega had been removed from office that his brother Umberto was still in charge of the Army. And, the Ortegas, along with Fidel Castro, were fomenting Communist revolutions in several nations in the region. Altogether, a bunch of really bad actors. A lot of bad things in El Salvador and Honduras could have been avoided if they had taken the muzzles off the good guys and let them do their jobs.

Excellent reading,

People need to read non-fiction to learn some the truths about our country, and Under Fire covers some of our countries down falls.. Perhaps by reading this book may help us save the U.S. as we know it, I do believe it can help educate people on how to vote rather that by persuasion and manipulation.. Oliver North is a true American hero, and that is that!!..

Washington has to do what we tell them rather than do what the corporate puppeteers and puppet masters tell them!!..

I enjoyed this book immensely. Mr. North is an awesome storyteller and this is a story worth telling. Time will certainly show that he was badly used by those we trusted to be honest and truthful.

Ollie North had the courage to make things happen, and the peace and democracy we now see in Central America is due to people of his ilk.
