This volume, newly published in paperback, is part of a comprehensive effort by R. J. Rummel to understand and place in historical perspective the entire subject of genocide and mass murder, or what he calls democide. It is the fifth in a series of volumes in which he offers a detailed analysis of the 120,000,000 people killed as a result of government action or direct intervention.

In Power Kills, Rummel offers a realistic and practical solution to war, democide, and other collective violence. As he states it, "The solution...is to foster democratic freedom and to democratize coercive power and force. That is, mass killing and mass murder carried out by government is a result of indiscriminate, irresponsible Power at the center."

Rummel observes that well-established democracies do not make war on and rarely commit lesser violence against each other. The more democratic two nations are, the less likely is war or smaller-scale violence between them. The more democratic a nation is, the less severe its overall foreign violence, the less likely it will have domestic collective violence, and the less its democide. Rummel argues that the evidence supports overwhelmingly the most important fact of our time: democracy is a method of nonviolence.

Excellent and important book.

This is such a great book. I quote Dr. Rummel in my own book, Faith, Fighting and Forgiving: Life Lessons from The Walking Dead (available here on Amazon). This should be mandatory reading in every high school in America.

I agree with the main thrust of the book, though I was a bit surprised the author had so little to say about the rise of Islam as a violent influence in the world and the profoundly anti-democratic stance of Muslims who are serious about their religion.

Historical Facts Presented in Numbers

R.J. Rummel proves by statistical analysis what some are aware of and many would like to ignore. The bottom line is that the typical "right vs. left" political analysis is useless; completely useless, especially if you are analyzing international affairs that span decades or centuries. The political definitions of "right" and "left" are terms relative to their era and their geography, and change drastically as you cross oceans or go forwards or backwards in time.

While R.J. Rummel does not state matters in the above terms, he does provide a more useful way of gauging the volatility of forms of government by charting the amount of violence they engage in according to the amount of power that is concentrated at the top. In doing so, Rummel proves that ideology is a poor measure of actual results, and that the most idealistic regimes murder their own population and wage wars against rival nations in proportion to the amount of power that is held by the ruling elite.

Rummel's statistical analysis proves that the more power a government has, the more violent it acts towards its own population and other nations. Rummel proves that even those forms of government supposedly created for the benefit of the "worker" with "social justice" and "economic equality" in mind will cannibalize its population in the name of the "Revolution". Rummel proves that a "centrally planned" society is also a society with power amassed in the "central planning" elite, and that it is these types of governments that have murdered their own civilians and waged wars against their neighbors.
