Interesting history, but recipes are not written the way I'm used to

The history of the Harvey Houses is interesting, and I enjoyed reading it. However, I bought this because I made a recipe that was published in the NY Times that was adapted from this book (Candied Sweet Potatoes). I'm glad I paid less than $5.00 for this cookbook (which was listed as used, but in pristine condition). The recipes were an interesting read-- some of them very basic, others were quite gourmet. The sauces section was an interesting read. As the intro of the book discloses, the recipes aren't written the way modern day cookbooks are. There aren't any measurements, cook times and they are written as for "the times" back in the day. I can wing recipes, but I didn't find myself being intrigued in any one in particular. Bottom line, this book is an interesting historical account of the Harvey Houses...but it's not a true cookbook. So, this cookbook will get donated, as it's really not worth adding to my precious and limited book shelves.

What could be more entertaining than recipes, mixed with some adventure, and, of course eating! Well, you made have heard about the Harvey Girls, they were Servers, a result of the Fred Harvey Restaurants, undoubtedly the first restaurant chain in America. Travelers would take the Santa Fe Railway train to adventures in the West: Grand Canyon, California, Indian Detours (you’ll need to look up that one!) and points in between. To serve the hungry travelers, when the trains stop to be serviced, passengers were glad to get off, get some fresh air, stretch their legs, and get some good cooking at the Fred Harvey restaurant next to the station (dining cars didn’t come until later). Some of those recipes are in the book -- and you don’t need to take the train to enjoy them! Intertwined in this book, are historical tidbits, photographs of train travel and Harvey Houses as they were commonly called. So climb aboard and see what those Master Chefs prepared!

The Harvey House Cookbook is a history, along with the recipes, of the restaurants found along the route of the Santa Fe railroad. These restaurants provided good food as well as a clean, pleasant atmosphere for weary travelers. The book is enjoyable to read for both the historical perspective as well as the tasty recipes.

this is a fascinating account of the story of Fred Harvey and the Harvey House restaurants. You will discover that Fred Harvey truley won the west.He was an innovative thinker, and supplied to the people along the railway route somthing that they never had before, Good food and service, he was a perfectionist in every way. He also had the foresite to realize the untapped potential in the art of the native American by setting up shops in order for the Indians to be able to sell their beautiful handiwork. No one had ever done that before. The book is also intersperced with vintage recipies from the various Harvey Houses and railway cars. This book is beautifully written and very moving in many parts as you will find when you discover that one by one these landmards gradually disappeared with the advent of modern times.
