Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry/Pamphlets Paperback – March 1, 1992

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,067 ratings

The teachings of these Readings are not sacramental, so far as they go beyond the realm of Morality into those of other domains of Thought and Truth. The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite uses the word Dogma in its true sense, of doctrine, or teaching; and is not dogmatic in the odious sense of that term. Everyone is entirely free to reject and dissent from whatsoever herein may seem to him to be untrue or unsound. It is only required of him that he shall weigh what is taught, and give it fair hearing and unprejudiced judgment. Of course, the ancient theosophic and philosophic speculations are not embodied as part of the doctrines of the Rite; but because it is of interest and profit to know what the Ancient Intellect thought upon these subjects, and because nothing so conclusively proves the radical difference between our human and the animal nature, as the capacity of the human mind to entertain such speculations in regard to itself and the Deity. Contents: Apprentice; Fellow-craft; Master; Secret Master; Perfect Master; Intimate Secretary; Provost and Judge; Intendant of the Building; Elu of the Nine; Elu of the Fifteen; Elu of the Twelve; Master Architect; Royal Arch of Solomon; Perfect Elu; Knight of the East; Prince of Jerusalem; Knight of the East and West; Knight Rose Croix; pontiff; Master of the Symbolic Lodge; Noachite or Prussian Knight; Knight of the Royal Axe or Prince of Liabanus; Chief of the Tabernacle; Prince of the Tabernacle; Knight of the Brazen Serpent; Prince of Mercy; Knight Commander of the Temple; Knight of the Sun or Prince Adept; Scottish Knight of St. Andrew; Knight Kadosh; Inspector Inquisitor; Master of the Royal Secret. If you read only one book on Freemasonry, this is it!

Review of: "Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Prepared for The Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States and Published by its Authority Hardcover – January 1, 1963," by Albert Pike.

On the surface this book comprises 861 pages of philosophy and esoteric insight into the Thirty-Two Degrees in Freemasonry. The Thirty-Third Degree is honorary.

For the practicing Freemason at that level who takes these printed words to heart it serves as a road-map for living a self-actualized life. A life that serves others before self-serving. A noble pathway that should be heralded and not hidden.

The author, Albert Pike, was a man who lived an interesting life. He was a poet, journalist, lawyer, an Officer in the U.S. Army and C.S. Army, and of course a Freemason.

This text is Pike's opus magnum; his masterpiece. The advice given and provided to the Freemason who is willing to employ it is as relevant today as it was when first written.

For those looking for a tome on "magick," etc. just pass on this. For those looking to link "Satanism" or something profane to it, please move on. This text is simply about making good men better. Nothing more.

Five+ stars. It is simply invaluable.

What is the philosophy inculcated by the Masonic Fraternity? Why have so many renowned men such as George Washington, Mozart, Benjamin Franklin, Harry S. Truman, and Sir Winston Churchill found in Masonic membership keys to leading enlightened lives? Be cautioned, that this is no easy read. You must remember when reading this that Pike expected his reader to have a classical education. Not many educated in the 21st century had the opportunity to study the classics. Consider this, not many Freemasons in the mid to late 1800s had beyond a high school education, and Country and Pioneer men the found teachings of the Blue Lodge was the only form of "higher education" available beyond the little red school house, and the little white community church.

I recommend this to every Mason who desires a more thorough understanding of his fraternity. This book is well known to Masons, especially Scottish Rite Masons, since Brother Pike was the driving force behind developing the Scottish Rite, if that accolade can be pinned to one person. I purchased an older, hardback edition partly for its historic and sentimental value, and I don't regret it. In addition to being a very large book, it is written in a style that today looks archaic and cumbersome. It is highly recommended as a gift to a new 32nd degree Mason or anyone else who seeks an understanding of what the Scottish Rite has to offer.

This is one heavy brick of a book! From page one Albert Pike leads us through the 33 degrees of The Ancient and Scottish Rite, theoretically. The rituals themselves are not described, the book functions as a sort of theory injection to the rituals. "Morals and Dogma" is the Magnum Opus of Albert Pike, written exclusively for Scottish Rite masons, but other mason will enjoy this book too, I would say that anyone with any interest in history, philosophy, ethics and esotericism will find this extremely helpful.
Albert Pike shows through this book how Freemasonry consists of several religions, not only one. He takes us through the similiarities in all religions, and tries to find the true essence in all of them. This will be helpful for christian masons who think that Freemasonry only is about Jesus and Hiram Abiff. Pike shows us that the Order has a lot of its history and symbolism from Zoroaster and the Indo Aryans, worshippers of Fire and Light.
From the ethical, simple working tools of the Blue Lodge, to the christian ethics and mysticism of the Chapter of Rosy Cross, to the Aryan and Parsee worshipping of Light, which the Templars continued from the essenees and the Zoroastrians, this books leads the reader through darkness and light, laughter and bafflement, to education and deep thought, dicipline.
A non-mason will also enjoy this book, filled with speculations and facts about the religions that affect the world so much. I recommend this book so much and whole heartedly that I am out of words now. Enjoy .:.

This print appears to be a duplicate of the original work, with the original's pages turned into images and printed a bit smaller on the new book's pages. (I've seen an original.) Apparently this process caused a few of the images to 'smear', making some of the print unreadable. I had to use an online pdf version to discover what some of the pages were supposed to say.

If you are a student of occult and esoteric philosophy this is a book you don't want to read until you read many of the world's sacred texts, or al least have an understanding of the existence of the ancient mystery schools, some of the interpretations of the hierarchy of God (first cause) and initiation. After you do, this work will bring everything that you have learned to a higher level of understanding, closer to truth, and a step higher to knowing yourself. There are many chapters that deal with man's struggle in modern and ancient times that are inspirational and liberating to the mind and soul that the novice can immediately and profoundly feel and are worth the difficult read. But the treasure of this work will only be truly seen by those young philosophers who have studied, scrutinized, and compared the world's religions, ancient and new. READ!

Excellent book written by an illuminated mind, that one of GM Albert Pike. Eminent writer, lawyer, journalist, lawmaker, teacher and Confederate General in the American Civil War, AP gathered all the necessary rituals and knowledge of Francmasonry, degree by degree, applicable even today. Valuable book, whether you're new in the Lodge, a long time member, or just a curious mind about those devoted to fellowship, moral discipline, and mutual assistance, who built amazing cathedrals and other monumental buildings across the medieval world. Highly recommended.

As a person who study's the occult and secret societies, this is a must-have for anyone looking to study Freemasonry. As a proud non-mason, I like to bring up Albert Pike & this book whenever I encounter freemasons. More often than not you will see the freemason become angry or frustrated that you, a profane non-mason, somehow have access to their "hidden knowledge."
