- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2007This is a timely, excellent response to the 'debunkers' of the 9/11 Truth Movement.
The 'debunkers,' of course, are the ones who are on the 9/11 research scene to say: "Everything the 9/11 Truth Movement says about government complicity is wrong. The official story is indeed correct, so please get back to whatever you were doing in your life before you ever heard of these absurd theories."
This is Griffin's thickest technical volume on 9/11. There are four lengthy chapters, totaling 322 pages of text, after which there are 62 pages of endnotes. The fourth chapter, about 100 pages in length, deals exclusively with rebutting the Popular Mechanics book "Debunking 9/11 Myths: Why Conspiracy Theories Can't Stand Up to the Facts." The first three chapters deal with other publications that emerged in 2006, as the 9/11 Truth Movement was gaining ground. These publications include Michael Broenner's Vanity Fair article "9/11 Live: The Norad Tapes," Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton's "Without Precedent," and finally the NIST report and its attempt to debunk the controlled demolition hypothesis.
I've been toying for awhile about what kind of review to write. If I give an in-depth review of the content for each chapter of this book, the review will be so long people won't want to read it! Several other in-depth reviews have focused on the problems with the NORAD tapes. So I will focus primarily on the Popular Mechanics chapter, since PM is most often cited as the knockout punch which refutes all the movement's claims.
Here, it is important to remember the psychological effect of a book like the Popular Mechanics volume. The publishers of that book know that people do judge books by their covers. Many people will walk past the book at the Barnes & Noble, and will say to themselves: "Ah-ha. Good to know. Conspiracy theories of deliberate US government involvement debunked. Next time someone brings up 9/11 conspiracy theories at work, I'll mention to them that I saw this book."
Fortunately thanks to David Ray Griffin (and others), Popular Mechanics' 9/11 propaganda has not been allowed to go unchecked and unchallenged. Let me just show a few ways in which the PM staff reveal themselves to be deceivers and liars. I'll focus on the Pentagon:
Popular Mechanics claims that "hundreds of witnesses saw a Boeing 757 hit the building." They do not seem to have been to interested in analyzing the believability of some of these statements, as Griffin has done. PM quotes structural engineer Allyn Kilsheimer, who says: "It was absolutely a plane... I picked up parts of the plane with the airline markings on them... I held in my hand the tail section of the plane, and I stood on a pile of debris that we later discovered contained the black box... I held parts of uniforms from crew members in my hands, including body parts. Okay?"
We almost don't need Griffin's help in realizing the absurdity of this statement: "But this is hardly 'okay.' Besides the fact that few people, aside from pathologists, would pick up body parts, the tail section of a Boeing 757 is over 20 feet long and quite heavy." Also, I might add, if he held the tail section in his hand, why didn't we see a tail section in the photographs immediately following the event?
A more disturbing aspect of this eyewitness' account, however, concerns the editing of his words between PM's March 2005 magazine article and the book which appeared in the summer of 2006. In March 2005, Kilsheimer reportedly said "and I found the black box." Researchers, however, noted that the two black boxes were found, according to the official story, by two firefighters three days later. As Griffin says: "At what school of journalistic ethics did the PM authors learn that, if part of a statement you have quoted from one of your star witnesses turns out to be false ('I found the black box'), you may simply change that part of the statement (to 'I stood on a pile of debris that we later discovered contained the black box')?"
Griffin goes on to say: "This modification is especially interesting in light of PM's James Meigs' complaint that few of the documents put out by alternative conspiracy theorists 'handle factual material with enough care to pass muster at a high-school newspaper.' Once again, the official conspiracy theorists are found to illustrate the very sins of which they accuse their opponents."
Although the Truth Movement is internally divided as to what happened at the Pentagon (yay-or-nay-757-on-scene), just about everyone is united in realizing the absurdity of the official story's composite claim: that the Pentagon was struck by AA 77 under the control of Hani Hanjour. Many people, including experienced pilots have rejected this story, by which Hanjour, by all accounts a terrible pilot, executed a 270-degree downward spiral drop in a few minutes, then circled around the Pentagon in a 330-degree turn in order to hit the unoccupied section at ground level, traveling only a few yards above I-395.
Several pilots, like veteran Ralph Omholt, have gone on the record to say that this series of events, especially performed by a terrible amateur, are "too ridiculous to consider." Pilot Russ Wittenberg has also gone on the record with similar remarks, saying that "For a guy to just jump into the cockpit and fly like an ace is impossible."
As Griffin shows us, the PM book does not even attempt to debunk this aspect of the story: "The PM authors like to claim that their case is supported by experts. But for their entire section on the 'hijackers' flying skills,' they quote only one flight instructor, and he speaks only to the issue of whether the hijackers could have pointed their planes towad their targets, not to the issue of whether Hanjour could have flown the trajectory allegedly taken by AA 77 in its final few minutes." They omit testimony like that of Wittenberg and Omholt.
Knowing they can't defend this part of the story, Griffin notes that PM uses straw-man tactics to fill up space: Discussing Thierry Meyssan's missile hypothesis and his misrepresentation of Mike Walters' "cruise missile with wings" statement.
When attempting to explain the physics as to why there doesn't visually appear to be a 757 on the scene, Popular Mechanics appeals to the authority of "senior research scientist" Paul Mlakar, who says that the plane hitting the Pentagon was like "taking a Coke can and smashing it against the wall. The back and front become one." As Griffin retorts: "As a scientist, Mlakar would know that smashing a Coke can does not reduce its weight. So why has no one reported finding a 100,000-pound piece of steel and aluminum in the wreckage?"
I shall address one issue in which the PM authors' desperate lying is exposed by the laser-sharp mind of Griffin. In an attempt to address the charge of a stand-down order by the US military to not intercept the planes, and bolster the 'incompetence' theory, Popular Mechanics says this: "One of the first steps the hijackers took after seizing control of the four aircraft was to turn off the jets' transponders. At the time of the hijackings, there were 4,500 planes in the skies over the continental US. Without transponder data..., controllers were forced to search for the missing aircraft among all the identical radar blips." As Griffin notes, this is a major lie because it paints a picture of 4,500 radar blips being on each ATC's screen. (Indeed the original magazine article explicitly said this.) But in reality, the radar scopes only cover a limited, local region; it is absurd to think that any single controller would be responsible for monitoring a screen with thousands of blips. Also, the four planes that had been hijacked would NOT have looked identical to the other blips, because only the hijacked jets would have been void of transponder data (a 4-digit code number and the plane's altitude). So they would have stuck out like a sore thumb. Finally, as Griffin asks rhetorically, "Was the US military's defense of the homeland during the Cold War based on the assumption that Soviet pilots would have the courtesy to leave their transponders on?"
These are just a few of the NUMEROUS examples of deception Griffin exposes in the Popular Mechanics publication. Anyone genuinely interested in knowing the truth about 9/11 will look at all available material, on all sides, and see the "debunkers" for who they are: people desperately grasping at straws to uphold a myth.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2024The author really put heart & soul into this book. The tiniest details about 9/11 - the jet fuel, the pilots, the fires, the plane trajectories, the cellphone calls supposedly made from the hijacked planes, the case for controlled demolition - are all explained in detail well beyond expectation. A real page-turner; I couldn't put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2007I'll limit this review to Griffin's Chapter Four, `Debunking 9/11 Myths: A Failed Attempt by Popular Mechanics (p. 207 - 307). Not that the other chapters are unworthy in any way, but the book is so large and thorough that a reviewer must either content him/herself with generalities or else laser-in on what I believe has been the most influential of the recent mainstream debunking efforts of the four that Dr. Griffin treats - namely, Popular Mechanics best-selling book 'Debunking 9/11 Myths'.
Griffin provides a lot of background analysis upfront, mainly in the process of deconstructing John McCain's Foreword. I will leave this treatment aside for brevity, and attempt to concentrate on the most specific and concrete criticisms of PM that Griffin makes. The overall point Griffin makes is that any defender of the Official Conspiracy Theory (Arab villains with boxcutters) needs to debunk ALL the challenges to prop it up successfully - and if even one good challenge remains standing, the Official Conspiracy Theory is in trouble. That is the logic of the case. But in fact they haven't debunked ANY of the challenges.
1. Overall Data: PM has relied mainly on personal interviews for facts, meaning independent researchers cannot easily check the source material. Where written documents are cited, they give no page numbers, again posing an obstacle to other researchers.
2. Pilot Skills: Griffin cites quotes from mainstream press and from (9-11 skeptic) pilots and ex-military personnel, suggesting that PM's confidence in the piloting skills of Hani Hanjour is wildly misplaced. PM apparently made no effort to present a balanced picture of HH's actual level of flying expertise.
3. Air defense response: The over-arching topic is the possible existence of a stand-down order. Within that context, Griffin gives a lengthy and complex discussion, and here the PM staff looks absolutely ridiculous in Griffin's hands. The basic problem is that they either never read, or deliberately chose not to cite, Griffin's other book on deconstructing the Commission report - despite the claim that they are shooting down the major alternative 9/11 challenges. Thus they make themselves look really foolish by repeating embarrassing claims (such as the claim that hijacked planes with transponders switched off cannot be tracked in USA airspace via radar) that Griffin already shot down a long time ago, with mainstream citations. In this area the PM staff relied mainly on the Commission Report itself for simple quotations and unchecked assertions. Many substantive charges and counter-charges are covered in this section, and in every case PM looks not only ridiculous but dishonest as well.
4. WTC 1 & 2 collapses: Again a long and complex discussion of many substantive points, including Empire State building comparison; degree of impact damage; melted steel after effects; dust puffs; and seismic spike data. In every case, Griffin shows that PM has either suppressed or remained ignorant of, a large amount of data that undercuts their (mostly Commission and NIST-based) attempted debunking. In this subsection, Griffin refers most heavily to his preceding chapter 3, covering the NIST WTC report.
5. WTC 7 collapse: This is mainly an restatement of the more extensive analysis of the NIST report covered in the preceding chapter. Here Griffin states surprise that, given NIST itself describes its own conclusions as "preliminary" how can PM be so "scientifically" certain of the collapse mechanism? Many concrete contradictions and inadequacies in PM's discussion are pointed out.
The remainder of the chapter is also organized in PM's own presentation order, with some of Griffin's own counter-questions interspersed as subtopics in their own right. You should have the flavor of Griffin's approach by now, but the details are so thick that for now I can only list the topic headings. Most of these are covered in multi-page withering detail supported by numerous citations. Let those who are interested please pursue your own examination. (These subheadings are not listed in the Table of Contents, so I hope this listing is helpful.)

There is much, much more to this book. I've only shallowly outlined one chapter here (in fact, if anything, his Chapter 3 deconstruction of the NIST report is the real shocker, even more so than the PM material covered in this review). Basically in all cases above and the remainder of the book, Griffin shows PM to be either ignorant or dishonest or both - PM seems to be propping up a pre-establish conclusion rather than attempting anything like science.
One final caveat for 9/11 beginners: This book isn't really written for you. If you are just beginning to think more deeply about what really might have happened, you should follow the steps below:
1. Get hold of "The 9/11 Commission Report: Final Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States by National Commission on Terrorist Attacks". Before you read any criticism or other conspiracy theories, become thoroughly familiar with the official account. Otherwise you will be crippled in following all subsequent analysis.
2. After reading the Commission Report carefully, without distractions, now get hold of "The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions And Distortions" by David Ray Griffin. Read this one NOT in a vacuum, but with your copy of the Commission Report (above) spread out next to it on your desk. Cross-reference and check every assertion Griffin makes and decide for yourself whether the Commission Report constitutes a coverup.
You are now well-equipped to begin your further studies and advocacy on behalf of either the 'Box Cutter Conspiracy Theory' or the 'Inside Job Conspiracy Theory' - your call.

Harinder JadwaniReviewed in Canada on February 16, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Masterly DEMOLITION by Professor Griffin of the web of lies and fallacies by Popular Mechanics
Professor David Ray Griffin wrote these books late in his career, but his mind is razor-sharp.
Every bit the 'Socratic' analyzer, he rips to shreds the web of lies, falsities and deceptions spun by Popular Mechanics to create the illusion it had 'debunked' conspiracy theories about who did 9/11.
The greatest false-flag operation in history, almost certainly, is exposed by DRG, in all its detail.
Sadly though, the pretended 'debunkers' from Popular Mechanics know that many people will be too lazy or incredulous to read the DEBUNKING of the pretended debunking.
The term 'conspiracy theory' was invented by the CIA decades ago, as a 'catch-all' defence against those who exposed the CIA's crimes - the history of which is undeniable.
The writers of PNAC - Cheney et al - engineered 9/11, the 'catastrophic event, the New Pearl Harbour', they themselves called for- to accelerate their plans to invade the oil-rich Middle East, and generally for world domination.
Then blamed it on 19 Arabs who could not possibly have done it. But their lies still dominate.
Professor David Ray Griffin expose those lies, which have not only authorized the murder of millions of Middle Eastern Muslims, but the progressive decimation of civil liberties including in America, the surveillance of every citizen on the planet, and the constant invasion of over 130 countries at a time by the Global SuperTerrorist. Google 'US wars in 130 countries'.
The so-called Global War against Terror was also authorized by the lies of 9/11. And the planet is in risk of a nuclear WW3.
So this is an indispensable book.

Mechthild LobischReviewed in Germany on June 6, 20125.0 out of 5 stars David Ray Griffin, Debunking 9/11 Debunking
[ASIN:156656686X Debunking 9/11 Debunking: An Answer to Popular Mechanics and Other Defenders of the Official Conspiracy Theory]]
SmokeNMirrorsReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 3, 20075.0 out of 5 stars Pretty much does what it says on the tin:
: it debunks the "debunkers". Calmly, dispassionately, thoroughly, and completely.
Contrary to other reviews, however, his "attacks" against the promoters and defenders of the official conspiracy theory are far from "highly personalised" - and certainly nothing like the way that those defenders of the official conspiracy theory have attacked anyone who has challenged the mainstream view. Rather, he seeks to rebut those often rabid ad hominem attacks by pointing out the absurdity of their claims, and by backing up his own claims with a wealth of evidence, referenced by over 1200 endnotes, in a way which the defenders of the official story simply cannot do without resorting to circular logic, distortions, and outright lies. Witness, for instance, the way the 9/11 Commission sought to "explain" insider trading, and the way that David Ray Griffin dismantles what amounts to a total non-explanation meaningless to all bar the easily-swayed:
"The Commission, however, did not provide evidence to support its conclusion. Its primary claim was that "[a] single US-based institutional investor with no conceivable ties to Al Qaeda purchased 95% of the UAL puts ("put" options)." The implicit syllogism behind this conclusion, as I have pointed out, was the following:
- The attacks of 9/11 were planned and executed solely by Al Qaeda
- No other person or agency had any other role in, or even advance knowledge of, the attacks
- The purchaser of the put options on United Airlines stock had no connection with Al Qaeda
- Therefore the purchaser could not have had any advance knowledge of the attacks
The Commission's argument, accordingly, was perfectly circular: Taking as unquestionable the assumption that the attacks were planned and executed solely by Al Qaeda, with no help from US officials or anyone else, they concluded that if purchasers did not get advance information about the attacks directly from Al Qaeda, they did not get advance information, period. The Commission hence reached its conclusion by begging the question, which is precisely whether people other than agents of Al Qaeda were involved in planning the attacks."
This latest work does not answer every question about 9/11, but then it does not set out to do so. Rather it sets out to show that those defenders of the official myth, such as Popular Mechanics and NIST, have more often than not employed the very methods and anti-science which they accuse challengers of the official story of employing. In my opinion he achieves this aim quite admirably. If you are "on the fence" about 9/11 because of what you perceive to be the persuasiveness of arguments put forward by the US Government, NIST, PM, the 9/11 Commission, or anyone else who promotes and defends the official conspiracy theory, then I dare you to pick up this book with only a "30% open mind" and not be ultimately convinced that the official story is a lie of massive proportions.
That other reviewers can claim to have read "many books on the subject" and still be only convinced of the shootdown of Flight 93 is quite incredible. I would suggest those reviewers do not put too much store by the claims of structural engineers who claim that it was "obvious" what was going to happen to the towers when hit by airplanes, in light of the fact that even the construction manager of the Twin Towers said "The building was designed to have a fully loaded 707 crash into it. That was the largest plane at the time. I believe that the building probably could sustain multiple impacts of jetliners because this structure is like the mosquito netting on your screen door - this intense grid - and the jet plane is just a pencil puncturing that screen netting. It really does nothing to the screen netting." That steel-cored, steel-framed buildings have never before collapsed due to fire is another reason why what happened to the Twin Towers was less than predictable. Perhaps those other reviewers would also like to ask "their father" how, with his "advanced knowledge of the structural characteristics of steel when subjected to heat", he could also have predicted the free-fall collapse of WTC7, hit by no plane, and with minor fires on only a couple of floors?!?!
