Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
Researching the derivations of Jewish names is a complicated task, and one that Benzion Kaganoff takes on with admirable results. He delves into the roots of names from Aaron (and its derivatives Agronsky, Arkin, and Orlik) to Zwirn (German for thread), finding biblical, occupational, and regional origins for nearly 4,000 names. Because Jewish names have been adapted and modified so often over the years, it's all the more a triumph that Kaganoff has traced the history of so many common Jewish names and their offshoots.

Book is much smaller and less thorough than I thought but it is still interesting and worth having.

Kaganoff has grasped the deepest meanings in this dictionary which is as much history as it is an explanatory work. Being a lover of words and how they became words is always fascinating to me, and I treasure this marvelous book. It will be a legacy to my progeny. PDK

The history was very informative. I would have liked more names as many of the names I am researching weren't included in this dictionary.

I was looking for personal names, some of which I found. However, I am not dissapointed since I have found many intersting items and stories.
It was worth of buying it. I am looking to by another item with Jewish personal (first) names soon.
Best regards

I bought this book to find examples of Jewish, first names but instead found a book giving the history of Jewish, last names.

I bought this book for the purposes of researching some of my ancestral surnames, but unfortunately, upon checking the Surnames List at the rear of the book, I discovered that four of the six names I'm interested in are not included. They are Agulnik, Farbstein, Lakritz and Wilensky. I checked for all derivations of these names, using similar consonants and other vowels, but they simply weren't there. The last two are pretty common Jewish names.
