Biografía del autor

Paul Stamets is the founder of Fungi Perfecti and codirector and founder of the Rainforest Mushroom Genome and Mycodiversity Preservation Project. He is the author of two seminal textbooks, The Mushroom Cultivator and Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, has been published in numerous journals, and is presenting more lectures on mycology than he can keep track of. An advisor and consultant to the Program for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona Medical School and the 1998 recipient of the Collective Heritage Institute’s Bioneers Award, Stamets lives in Kamilche Point, Washington with his collection of more than 250 medicinal mushroom cultures.

Mycologist Paul Stamets is the author of seven books. He is an invention ambassador for the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was inducted into The Explorer’s Club in 2020. He has received numerous awards, including the National Mycologist Award from the North American Mycological Association, the Gordon and Tina Wasson Award from the Mycological Society of America, the Disruptor Award from NextMed, and the SynBioBeta Lifetime Achievement Award.

 

He has named numerous new species of psilocybin mushrooms, and a new mushroom species has recently been named after him: Psilocybe stametsii. 

 

He is a collaborator with numerous scientific organizations and research institutes. His research is considered breakthrough by thought leaders for creating a paradigm shift for helping ecosystems worldwide.

 

His work has entered the mainstream of popular culture: In the new Star Trek: Discovery series on CBS, the science officer is portrayed by an astromycologist, Lt. Commander Paul Stamets. His work with mycelium has become a central theme of this series. In addition, he is the primary guide to the incredible mushroom documentary Fantastic Fungi, which first appeared in theaters in fall 2019, with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Greta resource overall. Wish the whole book was in color. I opted for the spiral bound version (the most expressive option) , and I was disappointed to find most of the pictures in the book are in black and white and low resolution. The low quality on the photo prints makes it hard to tell what’s happening in the pictures.

    Arrived on time, and it's definitely a good book to have in your library.

    I really love this book. I knew nothing about mushrooms and I wanted to learn how to grow them at home for use in cooking. We use tons of mushrooms in my house...we love 'em. This is not a full color, step by step guide to starting a little mushroom log. This is more of a text book....though a very entertaining textbook...the writing is not completely dry, which was refreshing. It was a little intimidating at first. It definitely deals with things on at least a farm sized scale and easily on an industrial scale.

    There is however a wealth of useful information that can be gleaned from this book about. For instance:
    -- Temperature for mycelium run of a particular species
    -- temperature to initiate fruiting at
    -- humidity to hold the room at
    -- substrata to use for the different species
    -- different ways to sterilize substrata
    -- how to take a spore print
    -- how to inoculate substrata
    -- Basic principles of farming mushrooms
    -- how to assess your environment and practices to improve your sterility controls

    I am no science wiz, but I am curious and daring. For the amateur scientist who likes to take their hobbies a little to seriously sometimes, this is the uber book of mushroom cultivation. For the strict beginner that needs to be walked through things slowly and methodically...or just doesn't want all the scientific mumbo-jumbo, this could be an information overload that will frustrate you. If you're ready to do some additional research to figure out how to scale things down and where to find alternative equipment that doesn't cost tens of thousands of dollars, this book will be great for you. I dream of a corner of my basement set up as a clean room for culturing spores and tissue from plants.

    Quality of the book is very apparent! Words are not too small, it's easy to read. Have skimmed a few chapters already and I look forward to reading it. I love gathering info on topics that interest me. This book makes me want to learn about other aspects of mushroom growing I never considered. Will be a great gift for my hubs, too, who is also interested in mushroom growing.

    After some reading of reveiws, I purchased two books on the topic: Organic Mushroom Farming & Mycoremediation AND Growinf Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms. I would say the same about both books from what I've read so far.

    I have a background in Biology, science, and lots of experience in just learning new hobbies or needy things, etc. My husband does not. Both books are perfect for either background and easy to learn and incorporate into your own needs/experience. Glad I choose both.

    I’m interested in learning how to grow mushrooms for my own food. This is a bit daunting for me but you can’t beat the information in this book.

    I'm a collector of books and in my mountainous mycology library, this is the reference text I keep reaching for, and my most valuable by far. Paul Stamets (and David Arora, for me) has inspired so many to step out into the woods and discover the magical world of mushrooms. I am quite convinced that Stamets is actually a mushroom in human form, as he has taken his love of mycology to a next level understanding. Equal parts reader-friendly and science-based, this book expands on and deepens the readers knowledge on well-known concepts, but delves into entirely new realms of practical usage of mycology from culinary to home and commercial cultivation to bioremediation. Can mushrooms save the planet? Paul Stamets thinks so, and I believe him.

    Un libro publicado hace 20 años pero no por eso deja de ser la biblia de cultivo de hongos con información detallada escrito por uno de los grandes expertos del mundo.

    Quizá para los principiantes sea una lectura un poco pesada por sus tecnicismos, pero en esta época donde el internet facilita el encontrar información, nada que un poco de investigación no pueda resolver.

    The book is super informative and I learnt many things not covered in YouTube.

    The book should be updated to continue to reflect some of the newest species of mushrooms cultivated.

    However the delivery left something to be desired as the book arrived a little dinged up
